Why do people use Windows for these displays?

What else could you possibly use? Mac? We all know mac is too expensive. Windows is the cheapest option. Nothing cheaper. Yessir. They're not fancy -they just need a simple Windows license and some up-to-date, current gen hardware to run that display...

A custom made Linux distro that starts a x server with a single program open would probably do it
