We aren't voting our way out of the climate apocalypse lol.
I mean, one option accelerates it faster. So while we don't solve it that way, there's still impact.
Both options accelerate it. One pretends not to, though.
Accelerate compared to which other realistic option?
Acceleration only exists in relation to a reference point. With no voting system that allows for more than two parties that have a chance, Trump is the one who would accelerate things.
You're just saying things you want to be true because it feels good, if you can't see the huge difference between parties then you clearly haven't been paying attention
One is business as usual neoliberalism, as the climate actively breaks down around us. The other is open fascism, while the climate actively breaks down around us. Third option is we collectively overthrow our capitalist overlords and redistribute our wealth globally and try to reduce our impact on the climate as much as possible, while the climate actively breaks down around us.
The climate is a huge issue for sure but things really aren't as bad as doomers want you to think, we can turn this corner and as unlikely as it seems humanity is actually taking it seriously and working on it.
The water wars are a favorite example of mine, pretty much all the areas in the list of places we were told to expect water wars now have solar powered desalination plants. Some of them have other wars but that's beside the point.
Renewables are now significantly cheaper and easier than fossil fuel so we're going to see that transition continue at an increasing rate as markets mature- we're also seeing huge energy saving developments like heatpumps and leds dominate markets. Even America now has more solar than coal and real plans in operation to improve rail systems, etc.
There are some big projects to automate freight for example which could greatly increase the efficiency and utility of trains thus making it a much more popular option and helping end the dependency on road vehicles. And that's just the things already underway, we've still got a few decades before we really need to have control of emissions so there's plenty of other developments to help us as long a we can keep the ball rolling.
I feel like I've written a lot you'll want to yell about so I'll save why I think a better, freer, people powered future is basically inevitable and that the best and only moral thing we can do is try to fold capitalism away neatly by building the replacement out from under it.
And yes I know your heart yearns for hate and destruction of the capitalist bastards but you have to realize that is capitalist and imperialist thinking which is incompatible with a better world. Focus not on those you hate but those you love, work for solutions that help people live better and we'll all lift the capitalist yoke off together.
I disagree, I think we're fucked.
I know I've been there, it's nice because you don't have to face the anxiety of the future if you can pretend it isn't going to happen.
The problem is you end up spiraling into darkness, it's only when look up at the light and hear the sounds of everyone else having fun that you realize you need to crawl from the mire you've wallowed in too long.
The world is a great place, enjoy it and look for positive things, you'll be surprised how many there are.
Lovely platitudes lol, ignorance is bliss, my friend.
You have no argument beside empty snark, you call me ignorant but it's very clear you're the one with nothing backing your opoon other than a strong desire for it to be true.
My argument is that every month for the past year has been the hottest month ever recorded lol. We're fucked.
Yeah but do you know that the climate models expected this within the +2c range due to combined factors including El Nino? This isn't a sudden spiral to unexpected doom it's a statistical bump we knew was coming, during la Nina the right wing will be saying that upward trends haven't continued and then we'll all have to suddenly remember how trends and cycles work...
And yes two degree warming is scary, it's not climate collapse scary though based on all the science we know and it's something we can solve if we continue to transition away from fossil fuel. The transition is going pretty well too, even the US has more solar with California recently having more production from renewables than demand. EV transition is going great too, globally it's starting to make a small but visible dent in oil demand, electrification of heating with efficient heat pumps likewise is affecting gas demand in many areas - those trends will continue and fossil fuel usage will decline.
It's genuinely likely that a child born today won't see an operational gas station on the road by the time they start driving, if they drive because pushes to increase public transit are increasing as labour and materials costs fall due to automation.
We're also moving into energy abundance where things like solar are so cheap and easy.that technologies like carbon capture and storage become viable on scales which make significant differences - especially if the carbon is used in construction or fabrication, by 2100 we might be making laws restricting people from extracting too much carbon.
