Hello comrades and welcome to the first improvement megathread of April!

As usual, some discussion ideas:

  • It's the first Sunday of the month. Is there something that you wish to accomplish or improve in April?
  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

I'm wishing everybody a great April! unity

Music:

Last Jam session I really feel like I leveled up, I played cool shit, kept great time, made everyone sound good. I'm really proud of my volume control and feel.

I'm working on this idea lately and all of its permutations:

LLK KLL KKL LKK. (K is for kick, L is for left hand but you can substitute L for R anywhere)

I think having the 3:2 thing is mandatory for a modern vocabulary and i'm trying to get it super clean and be able to start it in different parts of the beat with all sorts of sticking. I'm doing it as a fill, as comping pattern and as a groove.

I'm also working RLLRRLLR which I feel like is a must learn for playing gospel licks.

I'm doing the rhythmic scale at 40 BPM now, metronome on for one measure than off for two. Thats a ton of space but im doing fine with it. The hardest subdivision for me is triplets oddly. Not quarter notes or quarter note triplets, just regular triplets.

Im going to learn about microtime in my next lesson which I feel like I need to learn more about.

I also want to take a lesson with my classical guy because I cant get my left hand to generate as much bouncr as my right.

Im listening to Wynton Kelly - Kelly at Midnite right now.

I love the gap click app, its so illuminating, im at the point now where if its not in time its wrong. I want to be super clean and i want everyone to love me.

Exercise: I got my two mile run under 20 minutes again.

Self Improvement

259 readers
2 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
