Or it fell out of their pocket before they left the house and they didn't realize so they thought it was stolen. This would really get a conspiracy brain.

Isn't that what the post is saying? That's why their worldview changed; the sudden discovery of their phone at home caused them to realize it wasn't stolen after all

Obviously the robber broke into Anon's house and put the phone back. It's probably filled with spyware and child porn, better put it in the microwave and get a new phone.
