It drives me crazy that this country has such a strong strain of legalism in its populace despite having been created in an illegal revolution against the British Empire.
The revolution was bourgeoisie. It wasn't the good kind.
I bet you can trace the rise of legalism in the general population to the era when the USA became the military backstop to Western Europe's legacy colonial interests. The US became the very thing it revolted against
The US revolution was by no means anti-colonial. It was a bourgeoisie revolution led by land speculators and slave holders who wanted to replace the King's rule with their own, and avoid the rising abolitionist sentiment in Britain.
It's hardly surprising that they would end up how they have done.
