Because we're living through the collapse of the American empire where the majority of politicians are blatantly corrupt and no longer care about hiding it.

At what point does his vice president throw him off a walkway on the Death Star?
If the vice president kills him, and they become the president. Was it an official act making them immune?
They weren't president when they did it, so no. But the new president could just pardon himself if the GOP approved of the assassination, since the 6 SCROTUS's would say it's legal to do so.
