Well at least the Biden admin asked nicely

[-] GlueBear@hexbear.net 36 points 3 months ago

Real talk, why don't people bring this up? Like you have a Democrat president right now. Why is this shit still happening and how could another Democrat presidency prevent this from occuring again in the future when it's happening while they still have power?

[-] TechnoUnionTypeBeat@hexbear.net 40 points 3 months ago

Whenever people bring it up, Democrats clutch their pearls and explain that this is why voting is so important, because Trump stacked the Supreme Court, and so you have to keep voting Democrat to fix it

How will it be fixed? That they'll never say

[-] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

Yeah and they'll never acknowledge that Obama could've stacked the courts himself but deliberately left vacancies that Trump then filled

[-] GlueBear@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

Person I'm replying to right now is textbook example of this.

The way the system is explained in schools is sorta rigged towards people saying "oh well, the Supreme Court has the final say, guess theres nothing more he can do". Hexbear is one of the only places on the internet where people are saying otherwise, like to the point where I half question if I'm in a cult that believes some crazy shit that isnt actually true lol, I was raised in a semi-cult so I have some warriness of that to be fair. But yeah thats just the understanding the vast majority of people have about civics. We're taught that way. Theres really not much room left for questioning it outside of that.

Owl fact:

The Supreme Court has no ability to enforce anything they say. The court gives opinions and its up to the Executive (President) and Legislative (Congress) branches to follow the SC's opinion or not.

[-] GlueBear@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

So why do the Democrats keep following the SC orders then?

[-] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 3 months ago

Because obviously they agree with them. People should get a clue after all this times they could take action against the court and its rulings, but they didn't. Also, to more practical extent, SC being full of rabid reps give them really excellent excuse to do what dems are meant to do: ratchet effect. Also it's great propaganda material for getting more donations.

[-] GlueBear@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

Yeah, there is no other way to see it for what it is. Democrats know if they actually do stuff then they would anger their donors and people wouldn't vote for them after they did whatever it is they promised to do.

So instead of actually becoming a party that works to improve american's lives and protect people, they become the party that relies on vague threats of shit getting worse if they're not in power.

Democrats never cared about people's rights. If they did, they'd do everything in their power to prevent their rights from being removed. They like the courts the way they are and aren't going to change them.

[-] D61@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

Gives them an excuse to do what they (or their donors) wanted to do while being able to say, "Aww shucks folks, we really wanted to give you single payer healthcare, cancel federal student loan debit, legal access to abortion services but that rascally Supreme Court done outwitted us again."

Fundraising, fundraising, fundraising!

Fetishizing (fuck you spell check, this is absolutely a word) process and procedure to the point that its what most of the effort of politicking is put towards instead of making the country/world a better place.
