It was awkward and racist, but if you watch the video the crowd cheers as he instantly relates it to money. I'm tellin' ya, we're fucked if every Dem and Trump hater dont come out of the woodworks to put this guy in his place. His support is way more entrenched than Lemmy will have you believe. We have to descend upon the polls like the Golden Horde.

I was shocked to hear my next door neighbor last night tell me "be prepared if Kah-mala wins. They think January 6th was bad? That was a drunk frat party compared to what's coming. She never even got the nomination. I got my guns ready and I know people with more than that. If these democrats steal the election in November, you better be ready. There's going to be blood in the streets."

[-] grue@lemmy.world 84 points 1 month ago

You reported him to the FBI, right?

[-] thefartographer@lemm.ee 68 points 1 month ago

In Texas? For what? Being too Texan?

It'd be more efficient to drive to the nearby FBI campus and insult someone's mother if I wanted to get harassed by a federal agency.

I wish I were joking and I wish I weren't so scared.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

The F in FBI stands for Federal. They don't give a fuck what State they're in.

[-] meliaesc@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

But the workers are still average Americans.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

There's nothing average about an FBI agent.

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 43 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

She never even got the nomination

Well, she did though. There was a whole convention for it. But of course facts don't poll well with that demographic.

[-] thefartographer@lemm.ee 13 points 1 month ago

"They didn't even vote for her, they voted for the other guy in the primaries."

Me complaining about how fucked up two-party primaries are in the first place

"It's in the constitution! They claim this is a democra-..."

Me tuning out until his stupid words turned into violent words

[-] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

The convention didn't have the right color fringe on their flag, so it doesn't count. Or something, I dunno.

[-] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 month ago

compared to what's coming [...] got my guns ready [...] blood in the streets

Never ceases to amaze me how people boast about “what's coming” like they wouldn't be the first to turn into cannon fodder were something to actually happen

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

I'm not saying they're not going to try, but it will be much harder for them to do anything like they did last time on Jan. 6th. They had police, the DOJ, local officials and all kinds of state help last time while trump was still in office. This time, a lot of them have been put in jail and are certainly on lists. You have to be willing to put your world on the line and can't claim innocence, so you'd have to be an idiot to try anything. I understand how it feels to be surrounded by the worst of them, but I really don't think that's the deal.

January 6th and certifications are a known issue. I'm more worried about domestic terrorism from the anger. Hopefully they're loud about what they're planning, the current administrations seems to take that stuff seriously.

I can't do anything but watch across the pond and wonder how the US can survive whatever the fuck happens there.

It would be entertaining if it was a TV show.

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

Fortunately, it's a TV show for you.

[-] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 16 points 1 month ago

Sadly, I mastered the ability to feel empathy.

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Hmm, you might not fit in here then, we like to shoot first and ask questions later.

The good news is that most people don't care what the president says, so as long as Trump doesn't start WW3 or a civil war, we should be alright. If not, well, at least we had a good run.

[-] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 1 month ago

True, but I don't want him to sell my neighboring states to Daddy Putin

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago

What, you don't believe he's mastered The Art of the Deal?

Honestly, the US should stick to either funding or not funding other countries' defensive wars, we really shouldn't be sitting at the table unless both sides request it.

[-] AlolanYoda@mander.xyz 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

My impression as someone from Europe is that people wouldn't even care if Trump started any war, as long as it isn't named "Civil War" or "WW3"

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Fair. A civil war an WW3 impacts us directly, any other war would just run up our national debt and therefore isn't an issue. Bombing brown people is fine, we draw the line at shortages at the store (that's why we to war against Covid, after all).

[-] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago

That's a short sighted view of the world. We are very much affected when morons across the pond vote a madman into power.

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Fair, but my point is that most of the BS that happens here doesn't really impact anyone, such as:

  • Jan 6 - would've mattered if Trump retained power, but he didn't
  • mass shootings - blown out of proportion IMO (lots of misleading statistics), but also doesn't impact anyone
  • LGBT issues - some states have truly terrible policies, but in general, things are pretty okay; I live in a red state too

I'm certainly no fan of Trump and have voted against him every election so far and plan to this election, but I also don't think he's nearly as dangerous as the posts that get attention here on Lemmy make him out to be. He's certainly dangerous, but I think it's more from a "stupid economic and foreign relations policy" perspective than the "next Hitler" perspective that so many online try to label him as.

The net result of a Trump vs Harris presidency probably won't impact too many people outside the US. Neither seems particularly keen to start a massive war, and they both are championing policies that will likely make the economy worse (Trump's tariffs and Harris' price fixing and corporate tax hikes). Harris will probably be less bad overall for both Americans and non-Americans, but I highly doubt Trump will do anything truly atrocious, he really does want to be seen as "the best President" or whatever.

I certainly won't convince you, and my post was largely meant to be funny, so take this for whatever it's worth (probably what you paid for it).

[-] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

I certainly appreciate where you're coming from. But whereas I've no idea exactly what Biden did during his tenure, Trump's mandate was a nearing constant barrage of WTF proclamations and online logorrhea, with some of his delirium actually affecting me personally and I for one, as a foreigner, like to have quiet, well-behaved neighbours. So if we could have another four years of peace and quiet, that would be nice.

[-] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

another four years of peace and quiet

Yes, that would be nice.

That said, for all of the nonsense Trump spewed, his actual changes were pretty mild:

  • increased deficit and probably contributed to COVID inflation (cash handouts and whatnot tend to cause inflation)
  • capital punishment - US previously had a moratorium on executions, which he lifted
  • immigration - reduced number of refugees admitted, increased border security; family separation was pretty awful too
  • trade - withdrew and renegotiated some agreements, levied tariffs; trade deficit increased
  • Russia - weakened sanctions on Russia
  • Afghanistan - negotiated withdrawal of US troops
  • Iran - withdrew from nuclear arms agreement and increased sanctions

Most of that doesn't impact anyone, except maybe the weakened sanctions against Russia encouraged Putin to invade Ukraine. But that's really hard to say, since the invasion didn't happen until 2 years into Biden's presidency, so it probably would have happened regardless. the trade negotiations were mostly directed at Asian trade partners (mostly China).

He was a terrible president, yes, but most of the impact to regular people was him spewing rhetoric on social media. I honestly just ignored that noise and was relatively happy during his presidency (and the tax cuts were nice).

You guys should get your own fascist rise to power in check before worrying about ours. The amount of surveillance you've got going on is nothing short of Orwellian.

[-] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Europe is fucked as well dude. The far right is on the rise.

[-] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It is, but it's not like "Nazi Benny Hill trying to keep himself afloat" kind of absurd.

And besides that, the people voting for them are not completely removed from reality. They're assholes, but I can see a path back. Trump supporters though? Uh, that's gonna be hard.

[-] ReCursing@lemmings.world 6 points 1 month ago

The British Union Of Fascists or whatever they were calling themselves at the time (BNP, NF, UKIP, Reform UK...) were literally chased out of Liverpool (I think) to the Benny Hill theme!

[-] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 month ago

I could enjoy that. Got a link?

[-] ReCursing@lemmings.world 3 points 1 month ago
[-] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 1 month ago

Thanks, that was a great example in how to handle these assholes ❤️

Oh shit this is real? I thought i was at a movie theater in the front row and non-americans were all just sitting really far back.
