RMaps previously provided free satellite imagery, and any geo-location could be shared from OSMand to RMaps, to quickly show a satellite overview. (Tiles from ARCGIS IIRC)

What is the current state of satellite imagery in fdroid?

How can an OSMand location be quickly opened as a satellite view?

Edit: Extra info is, I'm looking for an offline satellite image solution. Full pre-loading of a specific areas, before travel.

With RMaps, it was possible to pre-load the tiles for the remote-location needed at various zoom-levels, before travelling a few 100kms from cell-towers, and then still being able to access an offline-satellite-view of those locations when there.

Hi, I added extra info.

Do you know if it is possible to pre-load satellite imagery tiles, for use when away from coverage areas?

Also, is the MS Hybrid mapset installed from, Plugins --> AnyGIS online maps collection ?

Unfortunately if you require fully offline usage, that option doesn't seem to be available via OSMand directly.

OsmAnd does support this. You need to activate the overlay/underlay you want to download, press&hold anywhere on the map, then in the menu do Actions > Download Map.

That's fantastic to know. I was completely unaware.

Thanks for this.

Do you know what happened to RMaps?

The previous page for it on fdroid 404s.

Afraid I have no idea on that one. A quick search led me in circles, so that doesn't bode well.

Thanks for checking.

It's not elegant but you can effectively preload the tiles by just swiping around the relevant zone at a bunch of zoom levels while you have a connection. The cache is not actively purged so the tiles will be available when you need them. I've regularly done this.

Holding down on the map --> pressing 'Actions' --> then 'Download map' works very well offline, thank you!

I did not know about the offline satellite download within OSMand, TIL.

What is the most open and still usable satellite tileset? Is it MS Hybrid?

I think it depends a lot on where you are. Where I am, the government (kinda unofficially) provides excellent quality (<10 cm/px in some cities, and <50cm/px for the entire country) orthographically adjusted aerial imaging, that's a lot better than any commercial solution.

Hey, you can add the satellite imagery you need by doing Configure Map > Underlay > Underlay map > Add more. Then you can select the imagery you just added from that same menu.

After you've selected the underlay map, you can pre-download the images for offline use by viewing the part of the map you want to download, touching&holding anywhere on it, then doing Actions > Download Map.

Hope that helps.

That works for online usage, thanks.

Does not seem to cache the satellite tiles for usage offline.

Note: I had to enable 'Online sources' to make the underlay option show up.

Did you use the "Download Map" option? It definitely works offline for me after I download it.
