Welcome to MoG!
Meanwhile On Grad
Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!
What is a Tankie?
Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.
(caution of biased source)
Basic Rules:
Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.
Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.
Apologia — (Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.
Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.
Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.
Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.
You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.
They're being ironic and edgy. Probably.
The question is only whether you consider ironic racism (in this case mocking 19th and 20th century "race science" with reversals of focus) to be racism regardless.
I don't think so, but there's also always elements of Poe's Law to consider. Not to mention that, for example, British and American racists literally said these things unironically about Germans, reaching fever pitches in WW1.
If you say any group of people are prone to rape because of their brains, then that is racist.
Do you, for example, think Robert Downey Jr's blackface in Tropic Thunder was racism or a criticism of racism?
Did he say 'the African American brain is prone to sexual assault'?
That is one of the traditional meanings of blackface, yes.
It's also clear that the intended meaning of the act is innately critical of that mentality.
If you disagree that it is acceptable that's valid but ignoring that the act was at least an attempt at well intentioned criticism is just dishonest.
Though seriously, in Tropic Thunder, Kirk Lazarus is a satirical character whose method of acting goes to such lengths that it becomes offensive, hence why he's in blackface.
Like it's supposed to be offensive, that's the entire point. It's satirising the film industry's portrayal of war and the actors in the industry. They even point this out in the film itself, lol, it's a key part of it.
Using satire to back up your deflection unironically is certainly... something. Haven't seen that before. But the original post has no satire, punchline, or even anything witty. It's just plain racism.
Of fucking course you're here with a heaping helping of terrible opinions.
Thanks for sharing, but my doctor said I should avoid false-pretenses used to destroy honest discussion.
Feel free to block me, it's not like you've ever said anything of value so neither of us will miss anything.
I can BLOCK people?!?!
Oh boy it's like Christmas 🥳
Oh, I must've missed that line of dialogue.
You should look at US WWII propaganda cartoons. It is very "interesting"
During that time the US rounded up all Asians and put them in internment camps for "there own safety." Let's just say they didn't feel very safe living in a prison. I actually knew someone who grew up in one of the internment camps. She didn't want to talk about the experience so I'm assuming it was unpleasant.
Long story short is that no country is free from the danger of race theory.
Japanese-Americans only. Chinese-Americans were actually highly praised by US propaganda of the time.
Racism is arbitrary and insane.
We all know words can't really express sarcasm or other underlying feelings or meanings very clearly. Without a /s your only able to assume if the they did or didn't actually mean that.
So what's the joke? Are they're pretending to be racist without the topic (rammstein) ever mentioning race to begin with?
I don't buy that. 'Please excuse me. I'm just going to be sarcastically racist without anyone previously mentioning race!' -- It's straight out of the alt-right playbook; when called out, claim it's a sarcastic, ironic joke!
No clue, could be either. It's text on a screen and the only emotion present, is the one you decide to apply to it.
Ask them if it was a joke or not to be sure, and if you have to ask, it's because it might not be.
Sounds like you're going to lengths to defend this behaviour or to differentiate it.
No apologia is allowed
Actually no, the hexbear comment is clearly bad in my opinion, regardless of if it was sarcasm.
Ironically, I'm of German descent, but whichever heritage someone is in my opinion would be the same.
Good, I'm glad you can agree it's bad. You have to be very vigilant against the alt-right playbook—no defending sarcasm or if it's a joke.
when you are with your peer group and use sarcasm, you probably also don’t label it as such.
That's a fair point, id just consider that as an inside joke I guess.
Right, but there's enough social context going on to generally assume that stans for the philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles probably don't actually consider Germans a form of untermensch.
Most of them aren't actual Marxists, that's a facade for them to spread disinformation and divisive content.
