The Leif Erikson one is very subjective though; you could celebrate:

  • The first humans to cross the Bering Strait, which is a long extinct lineage
  • The earliest ancestors to settle the Americas, whom we don't even know the descendants of
  • The first Europeans to reach the Americas, ie Leif Erikson (Polynesia did it much later)
  • The first people to cross an ocean to get to the Americas, most likely Polynesians but possibly Columbus
  • The first Europeans to form a permanent settlement in the Americas, ie Columbus
  • The founders of the forerunner to the US, ie Walter Raleigh & co
  • The founding fathers for founding the US

And plenty more I'm sure you could come up with

If you want to know how computers work, do electrical engineering. If you want to know how electricity works, do physics. If you want to know how physics works, do mathematics. If you want to know how mathematics works, too bad, best you can do is think about the fact it works in philosophy.

woe is me, a news source that wants to remain independent of outside interests is taking steps to avoid having to get funded by big businesses or the government who'll want to set an agenda...

I'd be more concerned about reading something free and not ad-supported (and like it or not, untargeted ads are next to worthless), as the money has to be coming from somewhere

Yes, but for human related reasons. Humans moved them around a lot in Africa and Asia - moving them from Southeast Asia to India and Madagascar is bound to have an impact on the currents they get caught up in.

Planes don't fly great circle routes though, there's overfly fees, weather, mountains, ETOPS and just plain politics... This route looks ordinary compared to some international routes, eg Helsinki to Singapore where you dodge Russia and Ukraine for politics, taking you way below the great circle route, then Turkey for overfly fees and Iran for politics, taking you almost back up to the great circle route, before dipping down again to avoid the Himalayas

Thing is, the message has to be passed along either by an intercom or by the person moving to the next room passing it on... Either way or travels at fastest at the speed of light, so you'll have people in the corridors moving to the next room for an infinite amount of time purely from the time it takes to propagate.

Given you're therefore committing to (at least on average) at least one person being without a room for the rest of time, why not just tell the chap in the first room to keep walking until he finds an available room? In terms of overall inconvenience (overall time spent without a room per person), it's the same as the original as both are infinite, but for the average person it goes from the time to walk from one room to the next to 0

-30C is a normal temperature in many countries, doesn't make it any less miserable

I had to call the electricity company to resolve a fucking clusterfuck of their making the other day (long story short my electricity meter is faulty), and after 3-4 calls I got to someone who said "jesus christ" after I explained my situation and how they'd made it worse trying to resolve it...

She didn't fix it, it's still not fully fixed after a further 4 days including 29 hours without power, but gee did I feel like I was speaking to a fellow human who was trying to help in that conversation above all others I had with them

Green peppers are unripe and so the seeds generally don't grow into anything

As much as Meta shouldn't be relied on for news, Canada creating legislation which stops Meta showing news then crying when Meta doesn't show news is frankly laughable and I don't know how their government didn't see it coming

The best way to never go extinct is to be usable by humans

Meta exist to make a profit, however they're never going to be able to advertise to most people in the fediverse, who also happen to be some of the most knowledgeable people in some fields. If they accept that they're never going to be able to advertise to those people, they go for the next best thing: monetising their content. Some here may rightfully have an issue with a corporation monetising their content, however by federating with the fediverse and being the first company able to monetise the content within it, Meta have a vested interest in not extinguishing the fediverse.

Complain about their privacy violations or them monetising content they don't generate as much as you want, but remember they're smart & money hungry, and the smartest thing they can do in their position is to make money out of people they otherwise wouldn't be able to.
