Hello comrades and welcome to the second improvement megathread of September! bonfire

As usual, some discussion ideas:

  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • Do you have any goals or plans for next week?
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Poster caption: "(we) Will build back to fame!"

Good luck with your goals! unity

Been grinding Theory lately, feel my brain expanding and my hair thinning lenin-rage

Side note, Lenin's hatred for Kautsky will never not make me laugh, he inserts his hatred for Opportunists and Kautsky at every opportunity, it's great data-laughing

Lenin would have argued in youtube comments and loved it

went for walks 5 days, went to bed really early 2 or 3 days, no coffee ~4 days

going to bed early is not necessarily a win, more like i don't want to be awake because i hate having depression

walks were long, but also kind of bordering on light self harm since i lost my water bottle and cbf to get a new one, and it was very hot outside

I decided to do a practice project in Python and Flask, a little web app I wanted to do anyways so might as well learn a new programming language while I do it. My work has always been in C# and the .NET ecosystem for the last 10 years, but I know I've gotten too complacent and need to branch out. I want to change jobs soon and I feel myself being pigeon holed, so hopefully this is the first step of trying other things since college.

This week was my first week at work after the vacation so it was mostly miserable. doomer But I managed to get stuff done and get back on the horse. The weather is supposed to get much colder next week so I want to continue running 2x per week.

I got a 19:02 5k last week. I have another race Tuesday and hopefully I can break 19 minutes or even run a devilishly fast 6/6/6 split.

I've got a routine going starting this morning to build upper body strength. It slaps, I feel so good even though it was just small basic lifts with literal 5lbs dumbbells. The meme isn't a meme it's real, I am gonna be swoletariat in no time.

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

That's awesome, can you share this routine? I would like to improve my upper body strength

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

It's really incredibly basic atm, 'cause I've been busted with chronic pain. So each arm gets ten lifts from like waist height, forearm flat, and then forward up to the shoulder, y'know the stereotypical, targets the biceps thing, Idk what it's called. Also I do five where I start with arms at my side and lift into a t-pose basically.

I'm running, i'm lifting, I'm reading, I'm coding, and staying in good spirits. I don't have a detailed report but all of my personal indicators are green with trajectories are upward.

Not much has changed for me in the two weeks since I've posted here. My stomach issues are gone and I am completely clueless on what the cause was. My assumption was a stomach bug of some kind.

I have maintained my sobriety streak and am closing in on 5 months now. I've recently gotten the urge to drink or smoke again, which is more of an urge than normal, and it's likely due to being bored as shit at work right now.

I'm starting up a second DND group/campaign in the near future which is exciting. Although I'm cursed to forever DM, and thus never get to actually play what I want, it's still fun to have the creativity juices flowing in my brain. My silly voices and accents have gotten much better now that I'm forcing myself to do them all the time.

Finished my training routine for the week for the first time in a couple of weeks through a combination of going to the gym and working out at home. But now I've got another week coming up where I'm having to alter my schedule so its going to be tough to repeat, which sucksobama-sad

I also hadn't weighed myself in a while since my scale is battery operated and I was dragging my feet with getting some. Well I got them this week and I've gone back up in weight. About 6-7 lbs, so its not the worst thing in the world since I've at least been able to stay active semi-consistently, but it does mean I had hard bounce back for my caloric intake after being at a deficit for most of the summer. I'll need to be a bit more gradual with how much of a deficit I'm at.

Missed out on a socializing event I had signed up for last week due to, what else, workdennis-stare Hoping I don't have that issue this week. I'm going to be going on a couple of speed dating events to put myself out there a bit more, see if I can work on my flirting skills a bitkiryu-stare

So far so good with my goal of limiting alcohol to at most one drink a week.

Right now, I am unfortunately unemployed as my seasonal work expired and the infamously stingy job market meant I couldn’t find a new job in time: not even an interview. So I’m hoping I can grin and bear it with some part-time work to a: save up money to move out again, and b: it wouldn’t be such a surprise I gtfo’d a month after starting if the best case scenario happens and I find a better paying job. Being reserve army of labor sucks.

[-] Tomorrow_Farewell@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

I have been focusing on practising and studying for the job that I got recently. Most of the other activities are currently on hold, but I have been maintaining my streak of studying Putonghua.

[-] Wmill@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Still can't do a pull up yet but dieting does leave me drained so I'll forgive myself. I noticed I have gotten flatter on this diet but I remain wide

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

There are easier variants of pull-ups and rows that you can do in order to build up strength, for example wall-pull ups

[-] Wmill@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

I'll get started on these rat-salute-2

Self Improvement

285 readers
2 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
