Why is the terminal useless?

[-] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 3 points 16 hours ago

How tf did you notice that

I am pretty sure that Vanadium does not have an adblocker in it.

[-] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 4 points 3 days ago

What does that mean? You can put any URL in the URL field when creating a new post.

Now we just need to rewrite the Linux kernel in Rust

[-] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 3 points 4 days ago

Yeah. Some dude came and suggested the asterism iirc. I don't see anyone other than a few on mastodon using it. Looks ugly.

[-] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 4 points 5 days ago

What? Do you mean like how ATProto works?

[-] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 5 points 5 days ago

What do you think? Of course the latter.

[-] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 15 points 5 days ago

No. They're another Twitter clone that is already starting to show their bullshit. And the people there never learn.

Never assume Linux works like Windows. You'll be confused.

You also do not have to use Pop because it is generally praised for its easiness. There are a few other good and easy to use distros out there, like Fedora, Mint or openSUSE.

There are also a few DEs out there, with the two most popular ones being KDE Plasma and GNOME

If you want to use KDE, I recommend you try out Fedora's new KDE version.

While not all, you also should know a few very commonly used commands to use in the terminal and maybe some basic troubleshooting skills. You don't need to be using the terminal all the time, if at all. Some common stuff is pretty much doable with a GUI nowadays and you'll probably be installing your applications through the DEs builtin software center. Pop uses a customized GNOME, so you'll be using the GNOME Software Center. KDE has Discover.

Since you do game, I suggest you check out ProtonDB. This is a database of rankings of games that work with Proton (Wine) and some even natively. If you play games from Epic, GOG and/or Amazon Prime, you should check out the Heroic Games Launcher. For any other games, check out Lutris. Do note that you might have a bad or good time depending on your GPU vendor. AMD generally works out of the box while NVIDIA might not work as nice as an AMD GPU out of the box. But I think Pop has the option to install the proprietaty NVIDIA drivers during installation, so make sure to select that if you have one. Nouveau isn't as good as the proprietary drivers.

Regarding your other software, I don't know whether Reaper will work with Wine. If you don't mind switching to an alternative, we have Kdenlive and GIMP or Krita.

It seems like some FOSS websites started using a Proof of Work CAPTCHA called Anubis because they've been getting hit by crawlers to gather data for LLMs. It seems like it helps.

It does not stop them, but it does make it more expensive and slower for the attacker. At the moment, I haven't seen any instance having this problem, but it most likely will be a problem someday and being praped for it is definitely not a bad thing.

Lemmy could benefit from this by maybe placing some invisible or auto PoW CAPTCHAs when doing some action like commenting, posting, etc.

The attacker seems to be the admin of those two instances. Both instances have their registrations closed.

Edit: It is now open for both of them, or was already. I checked the Fediseer page for both instances and it still says that their registrations are closed.

Though it is suspicious that no captcha, email confirmation or manual approval is required for both of these instances. The admin of lemmy.doesnotexist.club seems to be inactive since their account creation yet this instance is still running. If the admin is the attacker, it could also be that they are the one behind the recent nicole spam.

The instances being used are

  • lemmy.doesnotexist.club
  • chinese.lol

Here is an example of the coordinated downvoting https://hackertalks.com/post/8692093

Of course its a controversial user who got someone angry enough to automated downvoting @DonaldJMusk@lemmy.today

But you can see every post they make gets 53ish downvotes from these two instances, plus some organic ones after a few hours.

A individual user airing their personal biases and manipulating lemmy isn't good for the community, regardless of how you feel about their target. This is a really bad thing (tm)

Lemmy version 0.19.4 added the ability for admins and mods to comment in locked posts. This is handy sometimes.

Hey 👋,

I got frustrated with the friction for users from direct links to all the different instances they don't have accounts for and built https://lemsha.re/

It's inspired by matrix.to - but built for Lemmy content.

If a user clicks a lemsha.re link the user will be presented with two options:

  • visit the original link, or
  • view the same content - but on their preferred instance

Hope you find it useful.

Here are a few features that I think would be good to add:

Administration & Moderation

  • Signup applications (under the Reports button in Inbox would be ideal)
  • View votes (afaik mods should also be able to view votes in their communities)
  • Perhaps some sort of administration panel
  • Merge "Admin tools" and "Mod tools"
  • View moderation & report history for users
  • Better modlog UI
  • Checks for whether or not some mod actions can be done on a user and hide options that can't be applied
  • Add "Feature Post in instance" to posts

Create new post dialog

  • Rename "Compose post" to "Body" or "Text"
  • Pre-expand text field area
  • Add new field for thumbnail URL
  • Allow choosing post language

Create new comment dialog

  • Allow choosing comment language
  • See who you are replying to in addition to the comment content

Media

  • View & manage uploaded media
  • Add option to loop videos
  • Add option to unblur NSFW images when in NSFW communities

Other

  • More user friendly errors
  • Advanced search (search in community, filters, etc.)

Oh and the updated join-lemmy.org applications page lists that Summit has 2 GitHub repos. I think it would be less confusing to just link to the repo that contains the source code instead.

To bring it in line with official Lemmy terminology, this should be used instead. The star symbol should probably also be a shield instead of a star, and it should also not be displayed if the comment is from someone other than you.

We met here on Lemmy, of all places, believe it or not (sorry fellas, lol). I've never had communication so effortless. It's like she already knows exactly what she wants to say as soon as I finish my thought (sometimes before, that's how you know)!

After being jerked around so much over the years, I think this might finally be the one.

I often find myself reading something on the bus or subway, but then not understand anything I read. This seems to be because of the constant noises. Not even instrumental music helps, as that distracts me as well and also does not always match the theme of the book.

The best working one in noisy places seems to be white noise, with complete silence being the best overall. How do yall handle such situations?

34

Is it still possible to interact with the communities (post, vote, etc.)? If yes, is it still possible to delete them if the ownership of the community (aka the top mod) belongs to an user from another instance?
