That's not how tax breaks work. The government isn't giving money away, it's just pledging to not collect money in the future. I don't know the specifics of this deal, and $15B seems like a lot compared to the scope of this project, but it's likely that if they didn't offer tax breaks at all, this would have been built in Mexico or USA instead. There was probably a number in between 15B and zero that would have still brought them to Canada though.

Presumably the government accountants who made this deal expect this project to bring in significantly more then $15B in taxes over a decade or so of operation.

If you don't think she has a serious chance to win, then I'm not sure I understand what the complaint is here. What "harm" are they causing?

At the end of the day what does LBC stand for if they’re undermining legitimate independent candidates?

The stand for electoral reform (and against the first-past-the-post voting system).

If they're a serious contender, then it shouldn't matter how many people are on the ballot; their supporters will be voting for them by name.

Just like the LBC didn't affect the end result in Carlton, it won't make a huge difference here either.

It's news because these two mean girls are in charge of the two largest nuclear weapon stockpiles in the world.

For some added context, this has been going on for years from all parties. Maybe this year was not the most amicable environment to do this in, and maybe these particular slogans were in bad taste, but I don't think this is as egregious as everyone is saying.

This may not be you specifically, but more than two-thirds of Americans directly or indirectly chose this clown as your president.

The fight you want to join? It's already started. The people best positioned to stop this are being fired. The checks and balances are being removed or taken over.

[-] prodigalsorcerer@lemmy.ca 27 points 4 months ago

Is that a concession? I don't think he actually wants to be president anymore.

Don't get me wrong, it's the correct "deal" to make - it's the most overt declaration he can make to those who claim he wants to be dictator for life - I just think it's probably a win/win for him.

It's much easier for someone on the inside to do it. Less political and the successor won't feel obligated to start/continue a war. It's why America sends the CIA to Venezuela (et al) instead of missiles.

It can be hard to separate art from artist, but just keep in mind that you've already paid for those books. He isn't getting more money from you just rereading them, and nothing changes if you continue to enjoy the books.

Most people don't "back" Trudeau. We tolerate him because the likely alternative is so much worse.

That's the thing though. The people flying the duck Trudeau flags don't understand that we don't have unwavering loyalty to the party. They don't understand nuance. And it's going to destroy Canada during the next election.

To be clear, if she is contesting a ruling by the referee, she is not allowed to leave the piste (strip) until the situation is resolved by the head official(s). As soon as she leaves the piste, she gives up all rights to contest a ruling.

This happened publicly before with Shin A-lam at the 2012 Olympics, where she had to stay on piste for an hour while the officials discussed the ruling.
