i agree ubuntu is corpo drivel now but flatpaks are actually quite useful for some applications.

the sandboxing is nice to not have to setup manually for every little thing, and i say that as someone who avoids flatpaks generally.

sometimes you just wanna get things up and running, not everything needs to be a unix circlejerk.

sometimes you’re working with particular releases or builds that don’t, but like i said i might be the idiot lol.

i like the concept of arch. i don’t like the way i need to come up with a new solution for how im managing my packages virtually every few days that often requires novel information. shit, half the time you boot up an arch system if you have sufficient # of packages there is 9/10 times a conflict when trying to just update things naively. like i said it’s cool on paper and im sure once you use it as a daily driver for awhile it just becomes routine but it’s more the principle of the user experience and its design philosophy that i think might be poor.

arch is for techies in the middle of the bell curve imo… people on the left and the right, when it comes to something as simple as managing all my packages and versions, want something that just works^TM^ - unless i specifically want to fuck with the minutiae.

is garuda like endeavorOS or manjaro where it’s technically still an arch-based rolling release distro but the OS maintainers hold packages from upstream mainline arch?

i don’t hate that model, it’s more fun to use as an end user for sure, but i feel like it kind of defeats the point of arch’s entire ethos lmao.

one of my least favorite things about arch and other rolling distros is that yay/pacman will try and recompile shit like electron/chromium from source every few days unless you give it very specific instructions not to - which is annoying as shit bc compiling the entirety of chrome from source takes hours even with decent hardware.

granted, i fucking hate google products too but if you’re doing any web dev it’s necessary sometimes.

idk im definitely willing to admit i might be the idiot here. managing your packages with pacman might just be routine to some people. to me arch is the epitome of classic bad UX in an open source project. it’s like they got too focused on being cmatrix-style terminal nerds and forgot to make their software efficiently useable outside of 5 very specific people’s workflows. it’s not even the terminal usage that is bad about arch. plenty of things are focused on that and… don’t do it shittily? idk…

it’s not blatant nonsense. jesus fucking christ you people lack a brain.

the art/media/fucking whatever intellectual “property” = no intrinsic value, worthless itself

the labor to create the art = valuable

the labor to distribute the art, be it through “legitimate” or pirated means = valuable

it’s that simple. there needn’t even be any long moral/ethical arguments. piracy is righteous because information deserves to be free. there is no way to enforce ownership of information without wanton violence from the state.

i don’t mean this as discouragement but at least in my own personal experience, no it doesn’t.

that doesn’t mean it can never get better. just means for me getting diagnosed and taking different medications wasn’t the solution, it might not be for you either. so don’t be disappointed if you try it and it doesn’t work.

i don’t like how people hype up their prescription. just bc something works for you doesn’t mean it’ll work for everyone else, and it feels tone deaf when i see people in neurodivergent communities giving blanket “yes” answers to questions like this. it’s irresponsible and setting a large portion of people up for failure before they had a chance.

they’re doing it very knowingly… they wrote an entire nearly 1000 page fucking document detailing exactly what they’re doing in excruciating detail.

the fascists == idiots trope needs to go bc that’s exactly what makes them dangerous. lots of these fuckers are quite intelligent and conniving. you should be weary.

Hello.

I intend this thread to be a sincere discussion regarding both the usage of GenAI on db0 and the place of "pro vs anti" discourse in our communities.

There have been heightening tensions between both groups online, especially here on Lemmy and especially here on db0. For a good case study, see this recent thread in the lefty memes comm.

I will preface this with the fact that I am very much in the "pro-AI" camp; stated for the purpose of clarity, transparency, and honesty. I study machine learning academically and am aware of my own biases. I believe much anti-AI discourse fundamentally doesn't understand what they're talking about and mistakenly directs their own anti-capitalist, anti-corporatist sentiments towards a morally/ethically neutral technology that can be used for both great good and great evil. I disdain OpenAI, Anthropic, and others - not really for any reason other than they're massive corporations and it is antithetical to my beliefs what they do and the products they develop. I digress, I'm not here to proselytize.

With that said, I am of the opinion that the "anti-AI" communities in the fediverse and on social media as a whole have a significantly more toxic culture and are quite reactionary in nature. It is a known issue amongst moderation here on db0 that this particular group is known for brigading and being generally hostile.

Regardless of your stance on the matter, I think it is obvious that this issue is getting continually worse and needs some sort of community level solution. The status quo here is untenable and is only going to inflame more tensions in both camps the longer it is allowed to go on.

I don't intend this thread to be a location for proponents of either side of this argument to stand on a soapbox necessarily. This is about figuring out a way to coexist when a handful of individuals seem absolutely set on malicious behavior. How can we lessen animosity between these different parties and sort of "simmer down" the poisonous rhetoric that is generally employed all across the AI debate? You see proponents of both views engaging in egregious argumentative practices at times and it is clear that this situation is continually degrading and needs something to be done about it.

Thoughts?

are you and the 93 people who upvoted you crazy??

lmfao in what fucking world is serving divorce papers and then tearing them up right after they’re signed not even just a little bit toxic, if not emotionally abusive?

maybe a fucking adam sandler movie but this is real life.

think before you do stupid shit? other people don’t owe you discretion bc you’re an idiot? “uwu but what about the wife’s feeeeelings????” brother man grow tf up this isn’t a high school fling it’s a marriage. if you wanted to pull shit like this, why did you change it from girlfriend/boyfriend to husband/wife? was that about feelings too?

oop shouldve ran when they had the chance and the papers were signed.

sorry as someone who grew up as a child caught between this stupid shit people like you piss me off so much. this is traumatic for all involved.

what the hell are you talking about? you cannot inherit debt in the united states unless it’s been agreed upon contractually, which in the case of students loans it virtually never, ever is.

Hello,

This is an issue that has been previously discussed on the github as issue number 602, however it has been marked as resolved. I’m at work currently and cannot peruse the github much more to see if there is any discourse about this currently or if anyone else is still experiencing this on iOS, but I just wanted to spur any sort of discussion to be had about it here, because it makes certain communities borderline unusable.
