Thirteen years ago, we launched Mann vs. Machine, a chilling cautionary tale where an artificial consciousness tried to take all our jobs. You didn't know it back then, but that was actually a literary device called "speculative" fiction, where writers (us) accurately predict the future (the present), but then hide it so as not to cause widespread panic.

In an effort to keep panic levels low, and apropos of nothing, we'd like to tell you a story: Once upon a time, a Mann vs. Machine mode in a video game was getting a much-needed update. And so a brave blog post writer (us again) asked the community to submit Mann vs. Machine maps and missions in time for that update. (For the sake of this panic-reducing speculative fantasy, let's put the fictional deadline at Wednesday, August 27th).

If that was the entire story, you'd already be at a low panic level but vaguely concerned about a looming dystopian future (mission accomplished). But as is traditional in the genre of speculative blog fiction, there's more! The king of the fictional land where this all happened (ancient Greece), decreed on stone tablets that even though the update was dropping right around the ancient Greek candy-harvest festival of Halloween, the maps did not need to all be Halloween-themed (first tablet) and in fact shouldn't be (second tablet).

"Though some of them COULD be," the king carved into a third tablet, held in the stone hands of a statue... of PRIMATE GEORGE WASHINGTON? No! It's just regular George Washington in a dystopian future past where our sculptors are NOT AS GOOD AS IN ANCIENT GREECE! What an ending! (The end.)

Is this tale a simple flight of gripping, well-written fancy? (No.) Or a chilling glimpse into a future that could arrive as soon as, again, Wednesday, August 27th with a second part arriving right before Halloween? (Yes, see paragraph one.)

Millions of people have joined together to voice their demands of justice after Imamoglu's arrest. Imamoglu is the lead candidate against Erdogan's presidency, and has been pushing for an early election before his arrest.

According to journalist Fatih Altaylı, Turkish Embassy in Canada has filmed protests made in front of the embassy and identified a student who attended the protest against the Erdogan regime, called them and confiscated their passport. Embassy has said "You're a protester, go take your passport from Imamoglu if you can" as their reasoning behind this action to the student.

For better context in the broader timeline: Yesterday, the government pressured the university he graduated from to falsify his diploma. Law enforcement previously conducted raids and arrested various elected mayors, and is also keeping Umit Ozdag, leader of Zafer Party in jail without any reasonable justification.

Istanbul Republic Chief Prosecution Office has ordered arrest on 100 people that include politicians, journalists and businessmen, and Erdogan's biggest rival candidate for president, Ekrem Imamoglu, who is also the current mayor of Istanbul.

Fact: %100 of serial killers have drank water.

If we ban water for everyone, we can stop serial killers for once and all.

Couldn't find international news coverage of this, so I'll do my best to translate it:

CHP spokesman Deniz Yucel has made a statement about his SIM card getting duplicated and WhatsApp account being hijacked by malicious actors:

"While the methods used by malicious actors are not fully clear, my phone number was taken over in 19 August 2024 around 14:40, via malicious actors pretending to be me to request a new SIM card for my 25 year old number. The SIM card on my phone has been automatically deactivated; the malicious actors first changed my Whatsapp profile picture to President Erdogan, then sending the people I've added or to the visible groups pictures of Alpay Ozalan captions similar to 'would you like Alpay Ozalan to hit you too?'(*), Soon after discovery, we've sent a warning message on social media channels about this incident and contacted to people I've added through WhatsApp, and soon after got the account terminated. We've been in official talks to fully resolve this situation.

Note that this issue isn't caused by any security vulnerability caused by me or the party. This attack was done because of my position within the party. If malicious actors can do this to someone within my position, we can assume no one's communications and personal data is truly safe; but I am leaving what to think of this up to the public. I will be suing my operator turkcell for all damages, and will report this incident to the prosecution's office to pursue anyone involved in this attack.

Don't doubt that we will follow this all the way through and ensure similar incidents won't happen against any of 85 million Turkish citizens."

(*) The message is a reference to the previous parliament crisis in Turkey

Not being able to pull off an assasination in a country where citizens can legally buy an assualt rifle must be an embarrasment in the history of assasins.

Fun Fact 1: you can delete your name history on Steam

Fun Fact 2: tools like Steamhistory archive all recorded name histories of steam accounts, regardless of if the user deleted their name history.

The idea of forced automatic BIOS update is dumb. BIOS only should initialize its required components and fuck off afterwards.

The position as PEN text is: 6k1/pp2Qpp1/2br3p/2p5/8/1P3q2/PBP2PPP/R4RK1 w Q - 0 1

A position where both kings are under heavy pressure. I paused here, not seeing a way out for the White player at all. After finishing the episode I threw the same position to a chess engine; and there was indeed an exit out of the checkmate.

Reccomended Move: Qg5

I like the detail that this was a really tough move to see, on a pretty open board with not much moves that seem visible. I've been playing chess for years as a hobby and I wouldn't see it in that heat. This move essentially forces a queen trade to be the best move for Black, as any other move could result in White doing massive attacks; and after that with two versus one rook advantage could change the game's tides.

I kinda wish they didn't animate away the actual moves; I'd love to see the all the moves that lead to the scene, but still a very cool detail.

Even if this was a real terrorist, this is the worst move security services could've done.

They could bar a suspected terrorist from entering the plane via a temporary arrest. If they're wrong, just reimburse the travel costs. If correct, you didn't let a terrorist possibly hijack a plane.

They could use the "randomly selected for a search" card as an excuse for detailed screening. A terrorist can't blow up a plane without some sort of smuggled troublesome equipment anyway. If they're wrong, you spent like 10 minutes searching a random dude. At least you didn't gave a terrorist chance to hijack a plane.

They instead let a suspected terrorist enter the plane as usual; then tailed him with fighter jets. What the actual fuck was the plan if the suspected person was a terrorist? Blow up the fucking plane so all the civilians inside die?

Imagine the call done to the authorities

"This is airport, we've detected a suspicious individual that could be affiliated with a terrorist organization"

"Since you detected him, I assume you've detained him? We'll be sending units"

"Umm... no? Just let him board the plane"

"YOU WHAT?"
