Not saying it is. But having an accessible/fun way to get a jump start into something that appeals to you is kinda nice.

Because "just read theory" is awful. I've been reading some today. And it is... Not written to be engaging to a modern audience.

Absolutely. I thought I was mildly liberal. And then I found out that liberalism was just feudalism wearing a capitalism hat.

I stumbled onto LeftValues and took the quiz. Turns out that my political leanings aren't what I thought they were. Like, not even close. Just to preface, apparently I fall somewhere between Democratic Socialism and Centrist Marxism, with some leanings towards Social Democracy. 0% in common with Marxism-Leninism, which isn't going to be very popular in this community, but it's likely because of my feelings on centralization.

So, with all that in mind, does anyone have any recommended reading?

Definitions from the website follow below. And if this should be posted somewhere better, please let me know! :)

  • Democratic Socialism is a form of socialism that seeks to utilize liberal democracy as a means to achieve a socialist economy and society. Democratic Socialists reject revolution and a centrally planned economy, instead supporting moderate social ownership in the form of publicly owned utilities and democratic workplace self-management.

  • Centrist Marxism is a form of Marxism that adopts Marxist views on society and the economy while also refraining from taking a definitive position on revolution and reformism. Many Centrist Marxists may also be more nationalistic than other Marxists.

  • Social Democracy is a centre-left ideology that advocates for mixing left-leaning values such as social welfare and corporate regulation with capitalism and liberal democracy in the form of a mixed economy. Many modern Social Democrats favor Keynesian economics.

  • Marxism-Leninism is a form of Marxism that was forged in the 20th century in the Soviet Union. Marxist-Leninists heavily favor the use of a communist political party as the platform for both achieving revolution and establishing socialism. Many Marxist-Leninists are somewhat more nationalistic and patriotic than many other Marxists, and may favor industrial progress over environmental goals.

I mean, obviously. As a single person, definitely. But issues require groups, groups require compromise, and that's the political system. The whole thing is set up to encourage factionalism. And factions get boiled down to their simplest parts.

I feel like I just wrote in a big circle. Anyways, yeah, I agree. Lol.

Also totally valid. We need a political hypercube or something. It's a complex thing, with a lot of gadgets and variables. Just human nature to try and simplify it I guess.

It's been memed to death at this point, but this is one reason I like the political compass. It's got width and height, and does a little bit of a better job at representing things.

Solid take. Change happens from the bottom up, a little at a time. It's a bummer that nothing big usually happens in one lifetime. I guess it's easier to see the steps when looking through the lens of history, and frustrating when you're actually living it.

Need to add Jill Stein and Chase Oliver to the mix to fully embrace how weak all our candidates are.

I'm a pretty big fan of Dark and Darker! Will admit, the randoms from the Discord are... Questionable at best lol. Would definitely be happy to roll with ya whenever you're not streaming, though! PM me your deets!

Hexbear almost made me quit Lemmy entirely until I figured out I could just block whole communities. So there's that. Lol.

I'll end up voting for Biden. Not psyched about it, but pragmatically the alternative is so much worse. Might get shit from the ultratankies and hexbros, but I'd rather do damage control than whine about Biden and do nothing while an actual fascist snakes his way back in.

It doesn't feel good. And it isn't good. But this is the reality we live in at the moment.

Alright. I been afraid to ask for fear of getting banned from other communities hosted on their instance, but what is the deal with hexbear? The chat community seems like satire, but it gives off the same kind of vibes as the_donald, just far-left instead of far right. Like, I consider myself a lefty, but their community just seems self-destructive and toxic. Maybe that's the point, though? Honestly unsure, and afraid to ask on their instance cuz I don't wanna get accused of "just asking questions" and banned.

Gonna throw in my vote for the tail-end of fall. When it's almost-but-not-quite winter, and every morning is chilly and frosty. There's something really peaceful about the quietness of it. And it tends to be right in-between major holidays, so the break from "being present" is kinda nice, too.

Also tends to coincide with pumpkin spice season. Despite all the recent negativity about it in recent years pumpkin spiced everything is an absolute favorite of mine.
