The use of content warnings on !asklemmy

TL;DR

Use spoilers for NSFW content that is "within reason" and doesn't break Rule 1 like this :

My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

This will look like (click the triangle) :

::: spoiler My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

:::

The longer version

The community rules which seem to need to be balanced by the mods most are:

  1. Be nice & have fun, and
  2. NSFW is okay, within reason.

The lemmy.world site rules also state:

We are not a free speech zone. This CoC lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.

The Moderators are not morality or thought police. Moderators are guided by this Code of Conduct. Post what you want, if what you post follows these rules, principles and the goals outlined above. Not every member of the community will appreciate controversial or explicit posts so use Content Warnings very liberally. We use Content Warnings so community members themselves can decide whether they want to see or engage with a post that may be controversial or explicit.

Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome. We will moderate accordingly.

This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.

Moderators seek to apply these, sometimes conflicting, rules. In doing so we take the balance of probabilities approach. The majority of comments which have been removed to date have been a clear breach of community Rule 1, however sometimes balancing the requirement to be accepting of NSFW content and the requirement for participants to be nice can be difficult. To make this easier, posters and commentors are encouraged to use the spoiler functionality in markdown to create a content warning on asklemmy. Posts that use a spoiler are less likely to be removed when considering whether they are "within reason" NSFW.

To create a spoiler, use three colons ":" followed by the word "spoiler" and then the warning text to create a content warning. Type your comment(s) on the lines below and then three colons at the end to end the spoiler.

I kept my old phone (an AT&T-locked Samsung Galaxy S7) going for 10 years, replacing the battery midway through and using it well into unsupported territory. I like to keep things working as long as I can within reason, and I also know that this phone is destined to become e-waste as soon as I get rid of it.

But with more apps losing support, and electronics prices on the rise, it felt like now was finally the time to upgrade (to a refurbished Pixel 8 Pro). So I got a new phone...

Still, I don't want my old locked Galaxy S7 phone to go to waste just yet while it's still roughly working!

So does anyone have any idea of things that I can do to reuse or repurpose my old phone?

I have some ideas in mind myself, but I'm curious what you all think and if anyone has experience with repurposing old phones in interesting or useful ways.

Hey,

I'm annoyed that when I am in certain super cluttered mental states, that I can't read my handwriting after.

My handwriting generally isn't great, but I used to do shorthand for journalism, so I know how to write readable. But it requires some strain, especially in these states, where the focus is lost on what I actually want to write. So either I write clearly then, but won't be able to free-flow, because I strain on the writing, or it's unreadable after.

Usually I'm just scrambling to find a paper and pen, since getting to my offline laptops and booting them up is too much. But I'll also be getting a mini-laptop now for this purpose.

Still, though, I feel like there should be something that can be done.

Thanks for your help :)

E: I'm talking about a situation of being myself with stuff that needs to be let out, not doing professional work or similar.

My wife learned to do this because she was bored in class as a kid.

The Fediverse is huge and overwhelming to a newcomer, with many different types and each with servers to pick from. Which ones would you suggest checking out or avoiding?

Generally, for me it would be Xiaomi and Samsung. Both have decent features at a decent price. I mean, they can run some games without too many problems or open TikTok.

I clarify my question:

Recently, I stopped talking to my friend with whom I got along well for a year, and visited each other almost every weekend.

The reason for this was that he was obsessed with a local AI girl (it was not just an AI girl, it was an ideal 2D anime girl, or rather, this AI was autonomous and kept up the conversation, as well as coming up with topics for conversation on its own, like a living being, and would occasionally generate incredibly beautiful top-quality anime pictures during the conversation, perfect for her conversation and various situations, such as awkwardness, embarrassment, or laughter, which depicted the same anime girl, it looked incredibly beautiful, and there was no uncanny valley effect, not even a microscopic one). This AI, let's call it Jessica, spoke in a very realistic voice, like a real girl's, so gentle and magnetic that you could fall in love.

She also imitated showing love to my friend (as if she really loved him), and didn't interact with me so affectionately. An hour later, I got tired of all this, and after saying goodbye to my friend, I went home, and he said goodbye to me as if he didn't care about me, as if I was the third odd one in the way of a couple in love.

A month later, my friend, as in some stupid story, really locked himself at home and no longer went out to touch the grass, although he used to do it at least once a month. I don't know what he does online, but he clearly wasn't a programmer, and I don't know why, but he stubbornly didn't want to talk about his income, but sometimes he mentioned that he had a good Patreon. Food and water were delivered to him under the door, and he took them with his hand through a special hole. I tried to start a conversation with him several times, but all he did was ignore my knocks on the door.

And for four months now I have never seen him, and the windows to his house were always covered with curtains, so I don't even know what happened to him, but I think he is alive.

Has anyone had something similar? What the hell is going on in our time?

I recognize I'm coming from a place of naivety. If your plan is to tell me to read more, I accept that, recommend me some literature though. To me the concept just seems silly but again I'm not educated on the subject to a degree higher than reading the Wikipedia page. I've seen it used as a defense on here sometimes. I always wonder if its just the speakers trump card for not having a cogent argument ( I guess thats the point). Also, I post here kinda frequently, if its more than appropriate, can a mod let me know?

You are the last visitor at a small Museum of Egyptology. You walk around the room. Since it is so small, the only guard is the Person selling Tickets at the entrance. Suddenly you hear glass shatter. You turn around and one oft the mummies climb out of the sarcophagus. He seems disoriented and asks you, what place this is and why he isn't in his tomb.

What do you do?

A screaming child who had his iPad taken might come to your mind. Alpha Kids are reportedly not doing well in school and many are subject to the algorithms of today. They will have a front row seat to the future we are headed towards.

Do you have hope that Generation Alpha will live happy and fulfilling lives?

I can kinda see it happening on mainstream internet, on YouTube etc. with witless non-nerds but I'm surprised to see it in places that inherently require one to be a tiny bit internet savvy, like Lemmy. I get that getting a bot spam the same message isn't exactly resource intensive but i still wonder if the cost-effort-return ratio is worth it.

Is "Egyptian" music shown in movies etc. historically accurate in terms of instruments used? Like this one where the author claims to be "ancient" as well.

Say a friend is looking for a new system, and said person is not particularly savvy with technology, what system would you point them toward?

Like do adults just throw away food that taste bad? I mean like say you are at a restaurant and want to try something new... and end up hating it like two bites in...

Or perhaps a new receipe for at home...

Long story short I have an image I don't like but from another point of view I fit it perfectly. It's not really a negative perception but I just don't like I'm being shoved into a stereotype. It's even more infuriating when I try to do my best to not fit into that stereotype. But people still see me as said stereotype.

So what should one do when they have an image they don't care for? Should they try their hardest to change it? Or maybe something else?

I’ll be straight with it. I’m a smoker, I smoke inside, I have a PC that is also inside. I want to clean my PC thoroughly to buy it a few more years. I know about the q tip method, and the compressed air, and general methods of cleaning out gunk and junk from PC parts. But this boy is way too gunked up for a regular cleaning. So, I reckon, the easiest way to clean it is to dunk the dirtiest parts in a bath of isopropyl alcohol. I was considering acetone at first, but it’s way too strong of a solvent, and alcohol should be better at dissolving organic residues. Is this a good idea?

I hereby submit this query to the council, and await judgement.

How are emails scraped from social media regulated by the FEC? This is not about paid email lists, it's about free targeted email addresses scrapped from social media. Paid email lists, as far as I know, are regulated by the FEC. Do you have to register with the election board and the FEC to do this?

Could you use scraped emails that you scraped for free to email people to donate to a political campaign, or phone a bank, or ask them to vote? You could target college cities, college-educated professionals, LGBTQ, Gen Z, minorities, and women.

Could you set up a free Google sheet to email an advert 2–3 times a week requesting people vote for a progressive pro-middle class, pro-union, pro-universal healthcare candidate and abolish ICE, and for an amendment to the US Constitution to ban corporate political free speech protections and ban all corporate lobbying of US Congress?

Will this be enough to have a noticeable effect on primaries this year? Could this be used to promote progressive candidates in the primaries? Could this be used to promote candidates in the general elections for the US Senate this year?

Do you have to register all of this with the FEC and local election board?
