The use of content warnings on !asklemmy

TL;DR

Use spoilers for NSFW content that is "within reason" and doesn't break Rule 1 like this :

My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

This will look like (click the triangle) :

::: spoiler My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

:::

The longer version

The community rules which seem to need to be balanced by the mods most are:

  1. Be nice & have fun, and
  2. NSFW is okay, within reason.

The lemmy.world site rules also state:

We are not a free speech zone. This CoC lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.

The Moderators are not morality or thought police. Moderators are guided by this Code of Conduct. Post what you want, if what you post follows these rules, principles and the goals outlined above. Not every member of the community will appreciate controversial or explicit posts so use Content Warnings very liberally. We use Content Warnings so community members themselves can decide whether they want to see or engage with a post that may be controversial or explicit.

Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome. We will moderate accordingly.

This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.

Moderators seek to apply these, sometimes conflicting, rules. In doing so we take the balance of probabilities approach. The majority of comments which have been removed to date have been a clear breach of community Rule 1, however sometimes balancing the requirement to be accepting of NSFW content and the requirement for participants to be nice can be difficult. To make this easier, posters and commentors are encouraged to use the spoiler functionality in markdown to create a content warning on asklemmy. Posts that use a spoiler are less likely to be removed when considering whether they are "within reason" NSFW.

To create a spoiler, use three colons ":" followed by the word "spoiler" and then the warning text to create a content warning. Type your comment(s) on the lines below and then three colons at the end to end the spoiler.

I'm thinking about a game where you have to organise things like:

  • deal with millions of people whose houses were bombed
  • caring for injured veterans
  • building morning infrastructure like war cemeteries
  • reorganizing the economy from weapon production back to useful goods
  • managing ideological challenges

You know, dealing with consequences

The person in question also looks like she's in her early 20's. She had a chronic condition where she was basically in a waking coma but wasn't "experiencing" stuff for a decade so it's as if time had jumped from her POV because she has no memories of that period.

This gap is so disorienting for her that she identifies her age as 22. Being told her actual birth year causes confusion and distress, as it clashes with her sense of time and personal experience.

Preferably "unhinged" but hinged will do fine if that's how you prefer to roll

It’s a movie starring his nephew in the lead role, approved by his estate, and by all accounts it just feels like an attempt to whitewash him. This is a man who was accused of being a serial child molester, settled with a family out of court for $25 million just to avoid a trial (Chandler), and openly admitted he slept in the same bed as kids while he was an adult (Bashir interview), among other things. I don’t really see what there is to debate.

Anything pointing this out gets backlash on movie-related subreddits, which I find wild. It makes me wonder, if Epstein could sing and dance, would he have gotten a biopic too? Would people be defending him like this?

I know that (US) Charles Schwab debit cards will be refused on Japanese steam or PS stores as their algorithm can tell the card is NOT from Japan since their system only recognizes cards that are issued from their own country. The same applies if a foreigner tries imputting a Charles Schwab card onto the Japanese app store (iOS) leading to rejections.

The same thing applies to both Revolut & Wise: as Japan PS store, Steam & App Store refuse cards that aren't matching the region (perhaps due to potential fraud). It doesn't matter if you have either, since PS store (JPN) for example won't accept it, since they only cater to cards that are issued from the same region the store front is set in.

There are lots of apps that use various APIs to display lyrics on playing songs. I haven't seen an app that will automatically embed missing lyrics in an entire library. It can't be that hard, right?

I feel like pictures are "tainted" if I don't wipe it first before taking a picture... Like if there's a small amount of dirt on the lens in the picture... I'm gonna get soooo annoyed and its not even a picture anymore might as well just delete it lol

Found a nice house, top of our price range, but requires us to move from our low priced starter home. The economy seems like a mess and economics was never my forte. Is it a bad decision to try to move up given current trends?

Let's say Dear Leader decides to have the houses of anyone who speaks ill of him (or capitalism) burned down in the night, or their dogs killed, or nefarious files uploaded to their network etc. How easy would that be?

US, of course. I'm actually concerned about this.

I’m curious as to what people are doing with their spare solar power.

I’m in the US and on NEM2. I already have batteries and discharge them when the rates are favorable.

But I still have a lot of leftover juice. My partner recently bought an EV but doesn’t drive much.

I set up a home lab and even bought a small bitcoin miner that turns on when electricity rates are favorable.

Basically, I can't figure out the appeal or Tiktok and other types of repetitive media consumption where you are doing the same thing over and over and over. I remember trying it out and just being so bored and frustrated with the entire thing.

I feel the same way about TV shows, and restaurants and all that too. Going to the same place every Friday night and getting the same order and watching the same TV show on repeat just sounds like hell to me.

Or hanging out and talking about the same topics over and over and over, with never a new or novel thing to say, drinking the same beer/wine/cocktail over and over.

What is the appeal of living this way?

I’m currently a line cook, considering making the switch, but I’m a little confused about where to start. A local community college offers some certs that seem promising.

I have a little relevant background, a minor in comp sci, but that was some years ago (trying to relearn some of the material in my spare time now).

I saw ice cubes in a pot with some boiled eggs. So I told my sick wife that she might be delusional because that's the weirdest way I've seen to boil eggs. She laughs and can't catch her breath for a bit. Says she nearly died. I felt a little bit proud.

what is the furthest you'd go immorally for a fresh salary? Hell I'd work for Palantir for a nice $250k or be a manager at Evil Corporation Inc if I got a crisp $300k.

or are you a goody two shoes who will stand by your principles even if it means pain!

Whether it's economic, cultural, political, religious, ideological, whatever, what are some ideas that you believe in? I think friendly (very important!!) discussion of these could be good as to understand the views of others. Pluralism and the acceptance of many beliefs is generally a good thing.

As long as you don't believe in implausible conspiracy theories or say anything that is listed on the rules of most Lemmy communities and instances (in which case, don't say it), I think the opinions of others should be respected!

Please don't devolve this into a hot political argument, holy war, or similar. It ends badly for world powers (all of them), and it will end badly here with no winning sides. Friendly debate is ok as long as you don't go nuts, make sure you give good supporting arguments with evidence!

In a way that it prevents them from being played except in special software created by the game's developer

I prefer them to still be a bit green, and starting to yellow.

It seems like it was uploaded to Dailymotion eleven years ago. I'm looking for this very specific live performance. I could simply run my copy of it through a resolution increasing algorithm, but I thought I'd ask here first. :)

I keep seeing 444 everywhere or 4444.

My bank transactions are mostly 4s and my bank balance equated to 444.

What is the universe telling me?
