The use of content warnings on !asklemmy

TL;DR

Use spoilers for NSFW content that is "within reason" and doesn't break Rule 1 like this :

My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

This will look like (click the triangle) :

::: spoiler My NSFW warning

My NSFW comment or post content

:::

The longer version

The community rules which seem to need to be balanced by the mods most are:

  1. Be nice & have fun, and
  2. NSFW is okay, within reason.

The lemmy.world site rules also state:

We are not a free speech zone. This CoC lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.

The Moderators are not morality or thought police. Moderators are guided by this Code of Conduct. Post what you want, if what you post follows these rules, principles and the goals outlined above. Not every member of the community will appreciate controversial or explicit posts so use Content Warnings very liberally. We use Content Warnings so community members themselves can decide whether they want to see or engage with a post that may be controversial or explicit.

Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome. We will moderate accordingly.

This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.

Moderators seek to apply these, sometimes conflicting, rules. In doing so we take the balance of probabilities approach. The majority of comments which have been removed to date have been a clear breach of community Rule 1, however sometimes balancing the requirement to be accepting of NSFW content and the requirement for participants to be nice can be difficult. To make this easier, posters and commentors are encouraged to use the spoiler functionality in markdown to create a content warning on asklemmy. Posts that use a spoiler are less likely to be removed when considering whether they are "within reason" NSFW.

To create a spoiler, use three colons ":" followed by the word "spoiler" and then the warning text to create a content warning. Type your comment(s) on the lines below and then three colons at the end to end the spoiler.

Whenever I see a comment on social media that I think is wrong, I feel the need to correct it. These arguments can go on for days, even weeks, and if I don’t win the argument, I get overly fixated on it, wondering where I went wrong and so on.

Also curious about things that are the other way around where they look really good but taste awful.

Often, in discussions about old movies, someone will say, "That movie couldn't be made today.", and inevitably someone else will disagree.

Lawyers, platform moderation, and SEO have wiped it out. What's left is boring drivel whose only purpose is to sell you a product or a course or avoid a lawsuit. I realize some have moved to private groups and there are still sites if you look hard enough. But is that enough?

Federation feels like the right place to bring that culture back rather than let it die or has that ship sailed?

I recognize there is a massive anti incarnation argument (in the US). I agree with many of the points and reasons I've heard. That said, murderers, child molesters etcetera are still gonna exist to some degree no matter what. So, without incarnation, what are some options?

All the piracy subs I can find are dead, quiet, or too niche. I'd love to be part of an effort to bring reliable and maintained information about how to safely pirate to lemmy. It's actually one of the most frustrating things about switching from reddit. Are we puritanical here or something? If we had active piracy scenes I pretty much wouldn't have to be on reddit at all anymore.

My roommate only washes up if he poops, never after peeing. Now every time I'm in any of the common areas I have to wash my hands after touching anything I haven't wiped down. Thus, I wash my hands twice every time I use the bathroom; once as normal and again in the kitchen because I touched the taps, light switch and door handle in the bathroom which likely have groin sweat on them... /rant

Something I was thinking about in the car today, shuffling through songs that glorify The Hustle, talk about how money is all that matters…It got me wondering if there’s too much media that tells us that working ourselves to death is the only way to live.

Yes, I am of course aware that there’s plenty of media about living a life of leisure, rebelling against the grind, and so on. I’m am of course also aware that a solid work ethic is a generally positive trait.

So the question I guess comes down to balance. What do you see as the prevailing message in the media you see/hear/read? Is it, “Work as hard and amass as much money as you possibly can and nothing else matters?” Or do you see something different/better?

Especially getting older, I do this a lot more. Looking at things I want to do that ive been putting off, for example. If I have the money, I'm doing it. Now I'm not going full Yes Man on it, but I much prefer living like this. You could very easily die tomorrow so you should do everything you want to while you can, basically.

A lot of people I know seem to lock themselves in this invisible box of "I can't" when they totally can. Obviously, finances is all of our biggest limiting factor in this. But even a lot of wealthier people just dont ever really do what they really want, either out of fear of being judged or failing etc. And then, boom, brain cancer, you're dead in 6 months.

So I say, live it up!!

Now this doesnt mean blow your life savings on cocaine, unless thats really your thing.

Following two persons advice, I've got some oat milk to put in my coffee. They both said they prefer it to milk.

I thought it was too watery. I wonder if the grain juice I got wasn't very good. It's "Planet Oat" oat milk original unsweetened. It barely adds any color, texture or taste to the coffee.

So, coffee drinkers: do you like your bean tea with oat juice? If so, is it supposed to be that watered down? If not, what brand of grain juice do you prefer?

Ignoring the massive cost, legal hurdles, and the opinion of the residents/government/outside powers, if you could magically grant independence to certain territories or form new bigger nations from existing ones with no repercussions to yourself, what new countries would you create?

Please treat this as a non-serious post, let's not get into a massive political debate, those never end well.

Basically subject. I've been following my kid through two clubs over the last few years and there are just a few tools I think the coaches are lacking. One is drill and plan organization, the other is wellness before games (data science). I've been working on an android app for a while now and it's just about to the point where I need coaches to tell me what's wrong with it, or what they like about it.

I don't want to post any links so I can't get called out for advertising, but if you are interested in helping just reply and I'll message you directly. I did get my google developer account approved though I haven't posted a release build yet. There are still a few small issues I need to fix first.

I'm in two DnD campaigns, different people. I've always felt the table in campaign N.1 has a very "American Chopper" energy, maybe the "woman yelling at cat +american chopper" meme mashup could be a great way to describe it. Chaos, mess, heated arguments, flying chairs, unfinished dinners, it's perfect.

It bothers me that I can't find a meme that represents the environment at the other table. So here I reach out to you, dear lemmings, and your meme knowledge.

Campaign N.2 couldn't be more different. Everybody is organized and civilized. There's hardly any arguments, ever, outside of roleplay. Any objects on the table are clean and in excellent condition. There isn't a lot of physical contact though, in spite of everyone getting along well.

Any meme suggestions?

I mean, the 100 USD bill is NOT the highest valued bill in the world, that belongs to the former B$10000 bill (withdrawn) from Brunei (I'm serious, this exists) which is worth $7874 and yes it's a single bill, also converting to around £5803 & 6677€ respectively. Like why does this bill even exist when it's hard to encounter, given that Brunei is a petro-state, it comes as no surprise.

The second highest valued bill is Fr. 1000 ($1278) or £942 & 1084€ which isn't a surprise for Switzerland to have that due to how expensive it is over there. But, it's difficult to obtain even in Switzerland and has advanced security features making hard to counterfeit due to its high value (x12 times of $100) but they sell stuff that's over Fr. 1000 anyway so it makes sense for them to have that.

The reason why they are barely featured in crime movies or mentioned in real crimes relating to counterfeit money is because of their obscurity and the fact that they don't know both exist (but it does, although either really hard to get your hands on it or ceases to circulate) however still retains their face value. The Swiss Franc is deemed a "safe haven" currency while the US Dollar isn't.
