Ghost. Square Hammer is the song that initially melted my face off.

Edit: Almost forgot, I think I got into Dirt Poor Robins even more recently. I just love their sound, it's like nothing I've heard before. A lot of their songs possess religious undertones, but not obnoxiously so. Some faves:

I started listening to Ghost a few years ago after listening to Square Hammer. They are so good I have no idea how I got through my life without hearing them earlier. Love their costumes as well.

[-] Nemo@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago

I got super into "Square Hammer" last Halloween!

[-] Sheldan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I got into them a few years ago and for me it was the live video of 'Mary on a cross' which then got me into their discography.

Congrats on finding the best band ever 🤘

A timely question! I've been listening to Neutral Milk Hotel a lot recently, and for the first time. I'd heard of the band back in the day, but somehow never listened. The Wikipedia entry lists a number of my favorite bands as influenced by them, so I guess it's no surprise that I enjoy it so much.

I just found out about fleshgod apocalypse, they're fantastic. If symphonic death metal speaks to you it's worth checking them out!

A few choices:

The Fool

And the Vulture Beholds

I Can Never Die

[-] riquisimo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Checking them out now via their most popular videos on yt. I'm digging "Epilogue!"

[-] Montagge@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

One of my favorites of all time! I can listen to both the Agony and Labyrinth albums on loop!

Bloodywood - A Bollywood themed metal band. Great fun!

I’m currently waiting for Jesse Welles to take the stage. His song “RED” hooked me hard.

I probably heard stuff on the radio (CBC-1) and even on Lemmy that I've taken a liking to the first time I've heard them, but have yet to search for them. But here are a few relatively recent stuff. I pretty sure I've listened to each of the first 3 at least 10x, maybe ≥20x.

Clarissa - Ela [might be "bedroom pop"/lo-fi/dream pop/techno-pop/soft] (2021)

(You can probably download this directly from Vimeo.)

Yeah, I know, 2 young attractive barefoot women who kiss in the end and the translation, IIUC, indicates that her parents wouldn't understand their relationship, but I've taken quite a liking to the music.

Ivana Máchová & Miriam Hrušková - Terezka [sounds a bit like ABBA] (1979)

Cold Showers - "Sliver" (Official Video) (they sound a bit like Depeche Mode)

[21st dekaday, 2787 YAE] Laura (music by Nick Gudgeon; Dancer Laura Beanland Stephens) [the music has a bit of a Tycho feel to it] (2018)

Kaleo - rock and roll from Iceland

Amigo the Devil - found on a murderfolk playlist

Parov Stellar - techno-swing

Bridge City Sinners - murderfolk

Mariache el Bronx - mariache cover band

Plastic Bertrand - French surf rock (?)

[-] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I got really into Flopsy's Dream and their debut album Pleasant Pudding last summer.

It's the secondary project of Tom Davies, a Geoguessr YouTuber I've been following for years. Soft, laid-back rock that hit the spot just right for me.

[-] IWW4@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I don’t know how new they are but band of horses and Lord Huron

[-] Apeman42@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I definitely meant "new to you". My example is like a decade old, but I discovered them just recently.

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 1 points 1 month ago

They kinda blew up recently because of their KEXP performance, but I discovered Angine de Poitrine like 2 weeks before that.

I also discovered 88Kasyo Junrei around the same time. Fantastic band.

[-] hardcoreufo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

A few recent ones are Ducks Ltd, Cindy Lee and MJ Lenderman/ Wednesday.

[-] Cochise@lemmy.eco.br 1 points 1 month ago

The last one is Lord of the Lost. Scratched the itch of getting a metal band that I don't have to worry about being a nazi cult in the future.

[-] Apeman42@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Damn, these songs are good on their own, he's got a nice rich voice. But then oh my fuck, also the costume work is hella good.

Two that I just absolutely LOVE after I came across them:

Theocracy:

https://youtu.be/143Bj62fm-Y

Uplifting Christian power metal. They SHRED and bring me hope in this dark world.

Smash Into Pieces:

https://youtu.be/3NpjfRKOblg

I'm digging pretty much everything they do. "Trigger" is a favorite but I play the dopamine out of everything they make. That's a really rare and fantastic feeling to vibe so well with a group/artist. :D

[-] JakoJakoJako13@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

In the span of like 2 weeks I discovered a bunch of new music. I never get why people cling onto the stereotype that you stop listening to new music once you hit a certain age. I'm finding new shit all the time.

Die Spitz - Doom/Punk/Grunge band from Texas. They have really wild shows.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VB01l-V_vAE

Tropical Fuck Storm - Aussie Rock & Roll. Kind of a sad boy druggy aesthetic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t663s10WwPE

Earth Tongue - New Zealand classic Heavy Metal with Ozzy and Satan in mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7qUjVRe8fs

Spite - Deathcore. Kinda boring old school Myspace era stuff to be honest. Takes me back to 2007 when I was a wee lad though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7qUjVRe8fs

Am I the crusty Deathmetal head now?

[-] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

Vendredi sur Mer (Switzerland) - catchy, original electropop with a lot of lullaby-ish spoken word. Much of Charline's early work was co-written by wunderkind Lewis Ofman.

[-] Apeman42@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They've been around or several years now, but I just discovered Brothers of Metal a month or so ago from one of their tracks being in the game Pistol Whip, and I'm slowly becoming obsessed.

They're such a fun balance of epic viking fantasy and tongue in cheek humor.

POWERSNAKE - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpiK6ncKQfM

The Other Son of Odin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFGkutszRFA

Death of the God of Light - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=469fV_JzIwM

[-] johsny@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Royal Blood and Spoegwolf.

[-] reallyzen@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

Igorrr - can't understand no one around me have ever heard about them.

[-] riquisimo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I think for me that might be Unleash the Archers. I ended up looking through their discography and while their earlier stuff was a tad rough, everything from the album "Apex" onward is great. The quintessential UtA single for me is Awakening.

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 1 points 1 month ago

Really got into? The Strokes three or four years ago.

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

Oh God so many

Lebrock

Fm84

Przm

Dylan Gossett

Ryan Birmingham

Billy strings

So many more but these are what comes immediately to mind.

[-] Hyaline_Cat@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Sleep Theory - not to be confused with Sleep Token

[-] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

Super good band, got to see them open for Nothing More in '24
