What the fuck. How did journalism get this utterly fucked?

Experts point to a phenomenon called jury nullification, which occurs when a jury votes to acquit a defendant even though they may believe they committed a crime.

No, there is no "may"! It is jury nullification only when the jury believes the defendant committed a crime. There is no "may" about it.

Fucking so afraid to actually write something they will insert this uncertain language everywhere to the point it doesn't even make sense.

What is the point in reading your article, when even you don't seem to believe what you are writing is correct?!

Except the fire goes out once the plant is burnt and a new one can grow. The salt stays for a long time.

He says, after the Dems just had a presidential candidate that did not even run in the primaries.

No, a new party is 100% the way to go, though it shouldn't be hostile to the dems, e.g. not running for president until they have more congressman and senators then the Dems to avoid splitting the vote.

Please, do NOT shoot at airborn targets, or any target where your are not certain a missed shot will safely land in an empty area.

I am a big GOG enjoyer myself, but when I need to use steam for anything, I have never encountered such content. Perhaps there is such content in private or otherwise not very visible spaces (such as user profiles), where they will not get reported, but that is true for any site with user content. I call BS on this being an issue.

Here's my take: the bear thing is causing such a visceral reaction that it is very hard to take a step back, not take it personally and have a rational discussion about it.

Imo the bear thing was phrased in a way to cause that visceral reaction. It was intended to be antagonistic. If the same point was phrased the way you phrased it above, I want to believe we would have much more civil discussion about it. But instead, the posts put many male readers on the defensive and those that tried to explain were seen as defending this antagonistic stance.

That is no excuse for DM harassment or harassment on other posts, just my take on the reason the discussion turned so uncivil.

I see this way too often here on Lemmy, so I want to post this. Starting a commune is legal in most countries. If you believe in communism, you can found a commune and show us all how great it is.

You lack money? Well, that is literally what stock markets and venture capitalists (capitalism) are created to solve. If you are ready for an IPO, you can sell shares to raise funds. If you are not, you can get Venture Capital in exchange for shares until you are ready for an IPO.

Getting rid of capitalism means you need to find a different way to obtain funding for new ventures. And if your system relies on government charity (some government board handing you money) or taking resources violently, than your system sucks.

Edit: I don't mean that this is a replacement for full communist system. I mean this as a way to get some of the advantages while showing sceptics (like me) it can work and is better. A first step.

Exactly. As a SW engineer, I don't know how far we are from an AGI exactly, but I am confident enough Altman and openAi have no idea where to even start.

So the gov wants to claim the FDA did not regulate mifepristone hard enough, but this is perfectly fine. What a world.

Because the founding fathers had to make a lot of concessions to the already existing states that were not thrilled to give up their power and rights?

States literally don't even have to have elections. If they pass a law that the their electoral votes will be given to a winner of a raffle or a quiz show, they can do that according to the US constitution.

The will federate, try their best to suck as many users from fediverse as possible into threads, then defederate and become a walled garden again.

As for how they will suck users away:

  • Make their algorithms prefer posts from threads, so anyone wanting to reach a wider audience needs to move to threads
  • Add twitter like checkmarks that are only available for users of threads (they will say it is for security since they need to verify the idwntity of checkmarked people)
  • Add features that are not exposed on activity pub, so that you have to be on threads to use them (twitter did the same by for example not making polls available over API)
  • Intentionally make their activity pub slow and unreliable to make it look like other instances are broken and threads is fast and reliable.
  • Probably much more
