As you can see in the screenshot there are a couple of parts of the F-Droid application page in F-Droid that are in a different language. This isn't actually the first time I have seen this and is not limited to the F-Droid application. Currently it's just this one, but in the past I have had more apps than not displaying some or all of their content in a different language despite my phone being configured for English.

That's great Google. Since you made such a big stink about Apple supporting RCS that means you will let other apps on Android to use RCS, right?

Right!?!??

Hell yeah. Someone with "fuck you" money saying, well, fuck you. I'm not saying we don't all need to do our part in this of course. I just know that if I didn't have to work as much as I do to try and get by I'd be even more up these people's asses than I already am.

Alternately is there a more specific/better targeted community to ask this question in?

I am wanting to research and explore employment and compensation data for a some job categories in the EU and am wondering if there is an equivalent website or agency to BLS.gov in the United States? Unfortunately I only speak English (if that matters), but I can obviously translate webpages if needed.

That's not really how it works, which is made apparent in the video. Without going into details, IF they decided to pay for all of the product to let the buyers decide and it turns out the buyers are not interested they may not be able to recoup that cost and go out of business.

I sometimes find it hard to tell at a glance if a post I'm looking at is one I have clicked on since they are just a slightly lighter grey than posts I haven't clicked on. Being able to set it to whatever color I would like would be very helpful.

I know the above question isn't fully complete and lacks some important information, I will (hopefully) provide that below, but first I want to explain where I am coming from with this question a little.

I would consider myself a power user in Windows (maybe even more than that). At one point I was even studying for my Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA 70-270), worked in IT dealing with complex virus removal (anyone remember Combofix and Bleeping Computer?) and generally am comfortable bending anything up to about Windows 10 to my will.

I also have some experience programming in .Net, Java, Python, and Arduino's version of C++ (FWTW).

I have been trying to force myself to use Linux as my primary for a little while now. I ran Mint as my primary OS for a little over a year, and have recently switched to Manjaro to try Wayland and "increase the difficulty level" as it were.

The problem that motivated this post is that I recently installed an application via the AUR by cloning and making the package. Annoyingly though, the application is configured to run at startup and I don't see an obvious setting in the application to turn that behavior off.

I know I can "Google" how to figure out this particular problem, but it seems like a good opportunity for me to metaphorically learn how to fish rather than being given a fish by learning the Linux equivalent of what I would do in Windows for this kind of thing.

If I had this issue in Windows I would approach the issue in the following manner:

  1. Depending on flavor of Windows do one of the following and check the autostart tab
    • Run MSConfig
    • Run Task Manager
  2. Check the Startup folder for my User and All Users
  3. Pull out the "I'm done messing around tools"

I understand, and know the various locations and registry entries the applications from step 3 are looking at, it's just usually faster to use them than go digging into those locations individually.

My question therefore is, what is the Linux equivalent of the methodology I would use when in Windows? Is, or are there, specific tools for looking at startup programs and services? Is it as simple as digging into Systemd? Am I approaching this with the completely wrong mindset?

Essentially, what am I ignorant of, and can I that ignorance be rectified using my existing knowledge as a framing device?

Regardless of anything else, I very much appreciate your taking the time to read all of this and thank you in advance if you do have the time and knowledge to spare answering this question.

Cheers!

Basically exactly what the title says. In case there isn't a great place, or this post ends up getting more visibility than wherever I end up asking I will explain my approximate competency level and the question below.

In terms of competency I have an engineering background and degree, which means I had a single class in statistics. Technically I was one class short of a math minor (Graph Theory) when I graduated. Unlike most engineers and Six Sigma "graduates" I don't think this automatically makes me some kind of math/stats wizard. I'm aware I know just enough that I can unintentionally massage data to fit my bias (mini rant over).

My question is, when looking at a human population and trying to find the approximate subset of people with certain attributes how are correlations handled to avoid double counting?

For example let's say I am looking at a specific city and my data sets are thee most recent census, BLS.gov, and Pew Research. With the above sources I can pretty easily estimate something along the lines of

The number men in a US city that are:

  • Between the ages of 22-44
  • Have a STEM degree

However, if I then wanted to add another factor:

  • Are/Vote liberal

I know that is going to interfere with the original criteria because higher levels of education are correlated with people being more liberal, thus if I just punched in the percentages from all three data points the resulting number is likely going to be much smaller than reality.

Is there a term or method I can read up on for how to account for overlaps/correlations between population subsets? Does this make sense or am I asking the wrong kind of question?

FWIW none of this is related to my job, an argument, a shit post, a data graphic, or anything else I will ever really make. It's just for something specific (not the actually the above example but something like it using the sources I mentioned) I am personally curious about. I have also more generally been wondering about how to account for this kind of overlap for a couple of years now.

Regardless, thanks for taking the time to at least read all this.

Cheers!

Just want to let you know that you aren't alone. I have talked to a number of women who advocate for things like DEI and acceptance (which is something I also believe quite strongly in) but often default to preferring more traditional gender norms in dating. When pressed on the issue (not like I'm interrogating them just through normal conversations and getting to know them) they will inevitably say that it is ultimately "just their preference".

What I find so odd about that "preference" is if a man behaves in accordance with the traditional/societal gender norms in the beginning of the courting process, why is it surprising that they do the same thing later in the relationship when it comes to sharing emotional labor or various types of household chores?

I know the below is taking it to a bit of an extreme example but that behavior and "preference" often reminds me the sentiment "the only moral abortion is my abortion". Like I get it, there are a lot of shitty people out there who have no interest in putting in the effort, and they absolutely are not worth the time and effort, but when you do meet someone who is willing to put in that effort, it isn't really fair to treat them like all those other people.

I'm from an area where this can be a problem. In my experience it's pretty easy to see the buggys during the day, but at night on an unlit state road even with good head lights they can be hard to see until you are practically right on top of them.

Yeah, fuck cars, but it's just kinda a crap situation in general.

Your benefit of the doubt assumption is correct. He has explained it in detail a couple of times. Like you I find it unfortunate and frustrating.

Still, based on some of the numbers they have talked about their employee retention is very good and considering how talented many of the people who work for him are, if it were a shitty place to work that could likely easily find work elsewhere. I have a number of criticisms of Linus and his ADHD snap judgments or out of touch privileged takes, but he still strikes me as someone that does genuinely want to do the right thing that got insanely lucky and had to adapt to a crazy situation no random person off thee street would ever be that prepared before.

Don't use the time he instigated a coupe attempt as a reason?

Can you tell me why putting my hand on an electric burner that is red hot is a bad idea? Don't use anyone's past experiences being burned by hot objects.

Sure you could technically go into a complex explanation using physics as to why it's a bad idea, but why?

I am wanting a macro pad for work, but we are not allowed to install software on them and even the websites we have access to is limited. I don't want to have to use my personal computer or take the pad home whenever I want to make a more complex macro and am wondering if there are any where the keys can be configured using a configuration file stored onboard?

I'm writing this comment on a Fairphone 5 right now and it doesn't feel sluggish at all.

It doesn't seem to me like the increased performance of phones has had much effect on the actual experience for a while if gaming or content creation is not done on the phone. As a daily driver I think this phone will last me a while.

I could be wrong, but the reason I'm annoyed with her specifically isn't because of the use of private planes (I am annoyed by it, but that isn't specific to her). I'm annoyed with her legally harassing the person that made a bot that used publicly available data to track her plane(s).

That's why I am specifically amused by these posts, not sure if it's the same for everyone.

That shit is the most infuriating thing ever to me. It seems like so many technical discussions and communities are going to Discord now where that information is not indexed or preserved. How many issues have I had where the answer was sitting on a Discord server that will never appear in any general search result?

What kinda bothers me is that I recognize that something like YouTube is expensive to run and just switching to an alternative isn't super feasible. I would be more than happy to pay for a service like YouTube that I use everyday. HOWEVER, not with their bullshit double dipping. If I am paying a company like Google to use their services, I don't think it's unreasonable that their should be an expectation or mechanism where that means I am not just no longer served ads, but that all tracking and data collection about my account(s) are stopped.

That's never going to happen though :/
