And this is pre-LED bulb days. They didn't even have compact florescents. Imagine the power bill from incandescent bulbs running for several days.

Anything with Cinnamon Desktop or KDE Plasma is going to be the most 'Windows-like' in how the UI works.

If they're coming from Windows, but they prefer macOS-like interfaces, GNOME or COSMIC fit that bill.

It doesn't matter what distro you select, for the most part, as Linux is Linux. The only differences are immutable or not, desktop environment, and package management type, for the most part.

That said, Mint, an Ubuntu flavor, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE......all good options.

My company added an AI chatbot to our web site, but beyond that we generally are anti-AI.

Intel B580 Gamers (lemmy.world)

Hey all!

I'm currently looking to upgrade my Radeon 6600 8GB GPU in my primary gaming rig and I'm currently torn between the Radeon 9600 XT 16GB, which is a "known variable" or the Intel B580 12GB. Obviously, the B580 is around $75-100 cheaper comparing MSRP to MSRP and I've been seeing both pop randomly into stock the last few weeks where I could nab either with a properly timed deal alert.

I'm wondering how all of you Intel Battlemage gamers on Linux have been enjoying your cards. I know Intel has done a lot of work to make it work well on Linux, but there is MUCH less coverage of performance on Linux than on Windows. Most stuff I see is from launch time, which is 6+ months ago, and I know driver support has gained a lot of ground since then.

My primary rig is an AM4-based system with a 5800X CPU, so REBAR and PCIe 4.0 are not a problem for me.

It's always so sad, yet predictable, when people that get famous become drunk with power and make poor life choices that hurt others. If put to good use, the power these people wield could do so much good.

This world needs more people like Mr. Rogers, Steve Wozniak, and Keanu Reeves. Not this shit.

Man I hope Walz and Kamala win in a few weeks, because I really want to be able to listen to this guy call out bullshit for 8 years.

Wow. It's almost like we've been warning for years that putting backdoors into software, systems, and encryption would allow nefarious parties to exploit them.

As a straight dude, my first internal knee-jerk reaction was "this is such a stupid solution to a stupid problem", but then my mental "Don't be an asshat because not everybody is like you" guard rail kicked in.

Clearly this is a product for a market of people that it works for and I'm happy for them. Enjoy your neat keyboard thing, long nailed peeps.

I'm not even surprised by the racism in the Republican party anymore. It's just sad how hateful these people are.

That's impressive.

Want to know what I used to pirate, but don't anymore? Video games. Steam makes tons of money off of me and everybody else and has reasonable DRM with an easy to use store.

Piracy is a delivery problem. Make content easier to get for reasonable prices and you'll make money. Don't do that? OK. Piracy it is.

Who knew pissing off leftist people by being a douchebag when your company sells electric vehicles that are typically championed by said leftists could hurt your sales? So mysterious.

I'm not one that usually calls for the "Hail Corporate" BS where people lick the boots of big companies. In fact, I typically am very anti-corporate in every way, but Valve is one company I honestly have very little problem giving my money to. They very rarely have any anti-consumer things that crop up and every one to memory they've taken feedback and course corrected very rapidly. I'm afraid for the day Gabe Newell dies or retires, though. Whoever takes over Valve is going to have some big shoes to fill.
