Hi, can you add a setting to show a separator line before a top comment? Thanks!

Why no one's talking about the math? Monthly expenses add to $49,000 times 12 equal $588,000 per year. That's clearly not $300,000 and not even earning $400,000 gets you to the end of the year.

Hi, Lemmy.ninja has been unaccessible since yesterday. Anyone know why?

Title. If I use Sync without an account it works just fine every time, but once I log in, if I close the app and open it again it'll just crash all the time.

Thanks

Thanks for the explanation. So, this means we are another step closer to quantum computers for example?

I'm trying to grasp on this concept and how we could see this in our daily lives. Better batteries? I thought about that because they get hot when charging but not sure if it's because of the resistance. Going into standard circuits means we'll have better SoCs? better integrated circuits? Faster computers or phones?

Im trying to think about a daily life application but maybe it won't have a direct impact on that area, maybe it's more about facilitating research that will eventually turn into daily life stuff?

Can someone explain in lay terms why this is relevant? I read somewhere that it was considered as important as the invention of the transistor but didn't catch why.

Title. Looking for the megathread of FOSS apps that used to be on the other site, can't find it anymore. Any suggestions? Thanks

There's also m.lemmy.world running Voyager (formerly wefwef).

I use GBoard but since you asked for favorite, mine is Word Flow, Windows Phone's keyboard. When MS killed Windows Phone they kind of ported it to iOS but never to Android.

The Windows 10 keyboard is very similar to this Word Flow and the closest I've been to recreate it on Android is using RBoard and the Xbox theme but since I don't have a real reason to root I haven't done it again, so I'm just using the regular GBoard. Also, last time I checked (few years ago) the Xbox theme didn't have a dark mode so that's another reason not to use it.

I'd use SwiftKey but they keys are to thin. I've tried using skins like the Surface Duo but still too thin for me.

Another keyboard I liked was TouchPal but I believe was removed from the Play Store for having malware, if I recall correctly.

It's an American thing. If you live anywhere else probably use WhatsApp so you don't have that problem.

Hi, I decided to write this post here and not on any app's community specifically since there are many in development and they are all welcome to take my suggestions.

This post is about how I think marking posts as read, hiding read posts and keeping history of posts should be handled. If anyone else have different suggestions please comment below.

Marking Posts as Read

  • Mark posts as read when scrolling past them. There should be a toggle in the app's settings to mark posts as read after scrolling past them.
  • Interacting with a post should mark it as read. Interacting meaning opening the post, voting, commenting, saving it, etc. Note: Sometimes I accidentally tap the user/community so the app takes me to the user profile or community. This shouldn't count as interacting with a post.

Hiding Read Posts

  • Lemmy servers (instances) log your read posts and Lemmy has a setting to "Show Read Posts". My suggestion is to keep this setting enabled.
  • FAB. Please add a FAB to hide read posts.
  • Hide read posts by default. This is not a setting I personally use but basically since the server is going to feed the apps with read posts when loading (per the setting above), the apps should have a toggle to hide them by default both when opening the app and when manually triggering a refresh of the feed.

History

  • History should be kept locally by the app, not the server. If you delete an app but want to keep a post on your history just save it.
  • Interacting with a post should add it to your history. Since most (if not all) apps are in their early days they sometimes crash unexpectedly and if you have the setting "Show Read Posts" disabled on the server then you can't go back to the post you were reading so, as soon as a post is opened add it to the history and if the app crashes you just open it again and the post should be there on top.

These are my suggestions. Let me know what you think. If you are a Lemmy app dev please consider implementing them. Thanks!

ActivityPub. It's a protocol just like SMTP for email. It allows these different platforms you mentioned to interact with each other. They all together form the fediverse.
