Actually, what we probably want is something like openSUSE MicroOS with containers based on Nix or Guix.

Best would be if openSUSE simply adopted Nix/Guix for container configuration.

Don't forget about Nix and Guix.

I think it makes great sense to use Nix (or better Guix). The users are not expected to do any configurations. They basically need a browser and maybe a text editor if it's the public sector.

Also, you can run Nix or Guix on basically any other dist. Which is very helpful for reproducible deployments.

Ubuntu doesn't make any sense. Better use Debian in that case. We don't need to give yet another eccentric South African billionaire more power.

SUSE is owned by the Swedish venture capital firm EQT. For better or worse. All software has "ties" to the US. Remember there are lots of good people in the US as well. Everything isn't MAGA or tech feudalism.

I agree. Most Linux distributions have their base within the EU. Just dumb to bring a new Fedora based dist to the table. Debian is also very connected to the EU and France, even though the SPI is registered within the US.

One could push for The Linux Foundation to to move their HQ to the EU. If that changes anything. I guess it depends on if Linus resigns or wants to move back to Finland.

What languages and patterns will be considered woke?

For sure memory safety and dependent types. C++ will probably be shoved down our throats.

Totally agree. The majority of Americans are great people. Not everyone is MAGA. We need to support the good ones. Sanctions and boycotts tend to unite.

One exception would be if the project imposse a security risk because key people and servers, within the US, may be blackmailed or pushed by the new administration. We're not there yet though. And I hope these projects and people migrate if this becomes the case.

Also, FOSS projects run by big tech are probably also wise to avoid for strategic reasons.

Yes. It's about to activate in 2026, I believe.

DeepSeek was open about this from the very beginning. The $6 million figure was about comparing apples with apples. Just look at page 5 in the original paper. The SemiAnalysis report compares apples with oranges to save the ass of OpenAI.

Just learned about the FUTO keyboard. The source code license, the AI features and the requiremen to activate my microphone, made my BS/malware alarm go bzzz. So I looked up FUTO, and apparently it is an organization similar to FSF (but different).

So what is this FUTO thing? Are they good and trustworthy? Or is this just some new drug fueled eccentric crypto AI BS from Texas?

Is it "safe" to use the FUTO keyboard?

Last couple of months has been dramatic and there is a huge demand for ethical and safe social media. Even mainstream conservatives start to look for alternatives when US oligarchs wage hybrid warfare against their nation.

And there are so many low hanging fruits right now. Like Facebook event and marketplace replacements on the fediverse. Or just a Facebook alternative that isn't Frendica. Or maybe a commercial fork of Frendica.

I'm not involved in any development of fediverse software, so I'm asking here. Do you experience more interest from venture capital?

Also, I assume EU will pour big money into social media alternatives, starting 2025.

Note: I'm not interested in a discussion regarding if VC is good or bad for the fediverse. That's a good topic for another post though.

I plan to end my Facebook account before January 19. I like the format and would like something similar in the Fediverse. Also, I need a good Facebook alternative I can show people when trying to convince them to leave Facebook.

So what is the best Facebook alternative as of 2025? Frendica, Diaspora or Pleroma? Or something new and promising?

This is a good time to convince your employer that the company should switch to Linux workstations.

Can one still claim that the USA is a liberal democracy? Where do you draw the line?

I find it quite simple. Voters are economic left/progressive and social right/conservative. Center left parties are economic center and social left. The trend is similar in all western countries. And it's a bad match.
