It's impressive that you mentioned one of my concerns not reading the body or my comment! Happy to hear that star citizen works well with enough work!

I play both, unfortunately, even if BYOND works well on linux, I'm probably not going to be able to play it (old article but the attack hasn't ended yet)

I think what you saw was the usb getting flashed (like how you make an installable drive), rebooting to bios and flashing the bios from the usb. That's how I did it anyway.

Helping friends and family troubleshoot is something I would still have to do. I always assumed that I would be able to fix any mistakes quickly enough with a live boot usb but having a working windows install to fall back on is a good idea.

Also, you can flash BIOS via an OS? I thought it could only be done from within the BIOS?

I made a comment with everything I am not 100% sure will work. Summarised here: Is there somewhere like protondb I can check to see how well windows only software works through wine, and how well does BYOND and Star Citizen work in linux (I know they do work, but have no idea how well).

Update: I've looked through (almost) everything on my PC and my main concerns are:

  • There are some games I play that work well on linux (marked playable on deck) but have external utilities that I refuse to play it without, is there somewhere like protonDB I can check to see how well it runs through wine (and how to set it up with wine? I'm not very experienced with it)
  • For those who play SS13, how well the new BYOND update works with linux, I've seen it working on steam deck but I don't know how buggy it is.
  • How well star citizen works?

I've been meaning to switch my pc to linux for a while but have only recently gotten enough time to switch. Is there anything that I would need a dualboot for? I was previously concerned with VR, specifically using a quest wirelessly. I heard about a year ago that it is possible but not the best. Has it improved since then?

And is there anything else I would still need a windows machine for? I don't know specifically what doesn't work and I don't mind using FOSS alternatives.

I was running a raspberry pi with raspian on it as a homelab for a few years (until the SD card died :( I still need to fix that) so I am not completely unfamiliar with linux and the terminal and am willing to use it to make programs work as long as they work as well as they would on windows.

(I've decided on swapping to mint if that matters)

People are buying it because they love Nintendo games like you said. It's also because most people don't know enough to emulate/are scared off by anti piracy laws.

Another reason is that people are impatient, if the price dropped I would be tempted to buy one, especially if they also announce a new 3d mario (odyssey is one of my favourite games of all time). I'd want to play it now and not wait for the switch 2 to be hacked.

A lot of people who know how to emulate also would rather buy original hardware because playing on it is just better (I'm the same, if the joycons didn't drift, I probably wouldn't emulate my switch 1 games on my deck)

I thought they went independent after having their independence taken by fandom?

Not PTB or YDI. If I was a mod and saw that comment I would be torn between you being discriminatory and being unfamiliar with parts of English (it can be strange sometimes). I would have probably messaged you to clarify what you meant but the mod was being completely rational.

I have a 6700xt and 5700x and my pc can do vr and play star citizen, they are the most demanding things I do on my pc, why should I spend almost £1000 to get a 5070 or 9070 and an am5 board+processor?

Considering the game is coming to consoles this is probably just a first attempt so they can polish it for the console launch.

Earlier today I had an issue where my pi couldn't be ssh'd into and the hdmi port was outputting nothing. I powered it off with the power button and it rebooted into emergency mode (I assume the sd card corrupted?). I reformatted the sd card and it was fine. However, it has just happened again. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

This is a problem I have been having for a while and I thought I had fixed it but it has recently returned.

Sometimes my raspberry pi will lose connection on a random device. Sometimes it's tailscale, sometimes it's wlan, sometimes it's both. It still shows as connected in my router even when it is unreachable. When I can access it through one device while the other is down I check for errors but can't see any. If left alone for long enough it will fix itself (today it fixed itself after 6 hours) or I can reboot if I still have access to ssh through a working device.

To fix it last time I fixed wireless localisation settings (it was set to us instead of gb) but it being fixed after that change might have been a coincidence.

My only idea for why it doesn't always work is because of a range extender I have upstairs (where the pi is) which is connected to the network using fritz! mesh. I think it's a bad idea since it is placed very close to the main router (almost directly above) but my dad insists on having it.

After replacing the cpu cooler, we turned the system on with just the psu and hdmi plugged in to see if it works, it did and booted into windows but we had to power it down by holding the off button on the front of the PC to move some cables. After rebooting, the nvme drive is missing from the boot options and won't reappear (with csm enabled or disabled)
