Sounds like a nice citrus scent.

My initial impression of this razor is still very good. Excellent, close, and comfortable. I have to wear a shirt and tie for work today, so we'll see how my neck likes it.

I don't know what DJ is talking about! I can't find any search results about them being discontinued.

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 8 points 2 days ago

I'm not smart, can you tell me if having it behind a reverse proxy with certs and everything fixes any of these flaws?

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 2 days ago

I have other SS razors and they don't feel draggy. I'm leaning towards it's the safety bar being "sharp". Like, I'm tempted to hit it with a die grinder to smooth it out, but I won't (for now!).

April 2, 2025 - Side by Side

  • Brush: Wolf Whiskers – "Gianmaria" w/Maggard 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor 1: RazoRock GOAT
  • Razor 2: Merkur 34C
  • Blade 1: Personna Lab Blue (1)
  • Blade 2: Personna Lab Blue (1)
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Varen - Soap
  • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Hamami - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Dove Men+Care Ultra-Hydra Cream

Merkur on the left, RazoRock on the right. New blades for both.

Both razors are mild-medium. Both razors have excellent efficiency. I think that's why people love the 34C (and other Merkur razors with the same head design)... the amazing ratio of efficiency to blade feel.

1st pass - The Merkur felt like it had more blade feel than the RazoRock. Surprising! 2nd pass - I couldn't really discern a difference in blade feel. The razors feel slightly different overall, but it wasn't a difference in blade feel that I was detecting. 3rd pass - The RazoRock started to feel like it had more blade feel (while still safely in the mild-medium category). Another surprising twist!

Did one razor shave better than the other? Results on both sides of my face are nearly identical, and man, both shave great. But, where the Merkur left just the slightest bit behind, the RazoRock feels impossibly close. So, the RazorRock I'd say did a better job.

A word on how the RazoRock "feels". It has a sort of drag to it that the Merkur doesn't have, but only in certain directions. I can't tell why. It's not a "gets sucked into your face" kind of drag like a Karve Overlander. Could it be the shiny finish? Shiny razors tend to stick to my skin, even with good lather (but the 34C is also shiny, so...). Could it be the safety bar, which has a sharp angle at the edge where it rides along your skin? It's not uncomfortable, but it's definitely not as rounded as most safety bars. Or could it be something else? I notice it most when going across the grain, which is weird. Maybe time will tell.

Overall winner? For me, it's the RazoRock. It's stainless steel which I much prefer to zamak. It's $80 USD ($90 with the handle) compared to $49.50USD for a 34C HD. An extra $30-40 for superior build quality for a razor that I love is definitely worth it.

Is it worth it for someone who already has a 34C? It depends on how much you love the 34C, and how much you want a durable copy of it. I probably won't be keeping my 34C now that I have the RazoRock, but even if I sell it for $20, I'm still out $70 to have my new razor. Still not bad, considering the upgrade.

This instance has been in business for over 2 years, and the administration has decided to cash in and sell all user data to the highest bidder.

Myself (@walden@sub.wetshaving.social), @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social , and @merikus@sub.wetshaving.social (our founding father and visionary) all thank you for providing us with your data over the years. By the time we split the proceeds 3 ways, we envision starting a rocket company, and electric car company, and running for President of the Fediverse.

There are other active wetshaving communities in the fediverse, so we urge you to take your pick.

I got a new razor in the mail today, the RazoRock GOAT. GOAT is meant to stand for "Greatest Of All Time", and it's a copy of the Merkur 34 series. The ad copy says it's a copy of the "German 34" which is an old design with an expired patent. I was wondering how closely it would match the 34C, and it's almost exact!

There are differences, of course. It's a 3-piece razor, so you can use whichever handle you like (as long as it has standard M5 threads). The razor is wider in order to cover the blade tabs (which it does completely). The 34C has a small amount of blade tab exposed.

I did a 1 pass shave with the GOAT just to see how it felt, and my initial impression is that it's very very close to the 34C. I love mild yet efficient razors like the 34C, so I'm excited to have a durable, stainless steel version.

I know I didn't get it from all angles, but it's pretty much an exact copy where it counts.

The picture below might make it look like they're slightly different size, but since the 34C is a 2 piece I had to leave the handle on, so any difference is due to the slight height difference. The width of the baseplates is the same.

The GOAT is a 3 piece razor, so the baseplate is not attached to the handle. The included (optional) handle is longer, but not too long. I like both handles just fine.

Screek presence sensor (sub.wetshaving.social)

I'm using a run of the mill motion sensor in the living room that turns the lights off after a certain duration of no motion (unless the TV is on). Sometimes the lights turn off when I'm still in the room because I'm stationary.

I know people seem to like the mmWave sensors for this and I'm considering getting a Screek 2A from eBay.

I'm curious if anyone here has used one. Thanks!

Not long ago I won a beautiful brush handle from Peter at Wolf Whiskers in a charity raffle. It came with a great synthetic knot, but it was lofted too short for me. I decided to remove it so I can put something else in.

I emailed Peter and he confirmed that all of his brushes are assembled with epoxy. I didn't want to risk steaming the handle, but the Discord chat convinced me to try a 5 minute steam, which I did... 5 minutes isn't long, and it didn't work.

Not wanting to further risk a total failure (the handle is in 2 pieces, plus it has a coin in the bottom), I went back to plan A - mechanical destruction.

Picture 1: I used a box cutter with a fresh blade to slice most of the hair off

Picture 2: I used a combination of a small cutoff wheel and a grinder bit on a Dremel tool and started slowly chipping away at things.

Picture 3: This bit worked the absolute best. It's small, so it took a while. It also created TONS of dust, so I had to do this outside.

Picture 4: This is pretty much the end result. It was very difficult to know when to stop. The end of the knot/epoxy and beginning of "handle" was never really obvious. In the end, the hole was 15.5mm deep, and 26.5mm wide.

I did mess it up in a few spots. The keyless chuck on the dremel has some knurling which made contact with the ferule a few times, despite me trying to be careful. I was able to buff them a little bit and they're only noticeable if you're looking closely at it.

I still haven't decided which knot to put in it, but it's a beautiful handle!

Sup everyone. Hope you're all enjoying the season of decorative gourds.

I know a lot of you just use mobile apps (yay, mobile apps!), but for the few that also use a web browser, I've been slowly rolling out alternative "front ends". The normal URL (https://sub.wetshaving.social) has the default front end. It is honestly pretty good, if not a tad dated.

Most recently we brought online https://old.wetshaving.social, which is designed to look like old.reddit.com. Even though I'm used to that layout from real-reddit, I'm still finding it a bit lacking for Lemmy, especially from a moderator point of view.

Next, we want to introduce the Alexandrite front end. @sahenders@sub.wetshaving.social already uses this, accessible from https://alexandrite.app/sub.wetshaving.social. Feel free to check it out there until we get ours behind https.

Anyway, we want to run our own instance of Alexandrite, which will be locked to our lemmy server, simplifying the experience for people like @sahenders@wetshaving.social.

All that is to say, we need a URL to put it behind.

So far, the suggestions are:

gem.wetshaving.social - Alexandrite is named after a gem on the devs wife's ring, and of course there's the GEM connection with our hobby.
alx.wetshaving.social
new.wetshaving.social - simply the opposite of old.wetshaving.social

Please leave your ideas, good or bad. Often our worst ideas turn out to be great, so don't be shy.

THANKS!
