The only road to being a billionaire is through exploitation. If you aren’t willing to sacrifice your morals somewhere along the path to get there, your journey to being a billionaire ends. Like it or not, that’s the reality. Gates is no better than the others. He just has better PR. There’s more to being a good member of humanity than giving away money for the tax breaks and PR. Working class folks defending billionaires in 2025 is some goldfish brain type shit.

I want to like Bill Gates, you're probably right about PR. Even though I use Linux I still think he's been a positive for humanity.

[-] wuphysics87@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 hours ago

He's developed this Mr. Rogers persona

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

That's called being a class traitor.

[-] pemptago@lemmy.ml 29 points 21 hours ago

Bill Gates the farmer?

Just trying to find a decent link led me past so many deceptive headlines like Bill Gates owns a lot of American farmland, but not the majority.

So... he's the largest private owner of US farmland , but he doesn't own a majority-- What a relief /s

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 11 points 18 hours ago

Wow that AP article is insanely deceptive. They make a fact look like a conspiracy theory and then "debunk" it with a strawman.

Anyone with billions of dollars or even multi millions who isn't using most of the amount to aid humanity is an asshole, regardless of what their political views are

[-] vfreire85@lemmy.ml 10 points 12 hours ago

billionaires shouldn't exist in the first place. there's no way such amount of resources is going to efficiently be used by one single person.

[-] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Batman enters the chat....

[-] wolfinthewoods@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 hours ago

And Batman doesn't exist, so the quote still checks out. But, if he did, he shouldn't either. Absolute Batman has a great take on Batman as a poor, working-class person. I think Batman works better as that. Batman inherently is problematic, as a billionaire playboy beating up mentally-ill people. (This coming from a Batman fan myself).

Throughout the 90s Microsoft was the company equivalent of a serial killer, so Gates had to really step up his public relations. Goldfish-brained liberal techies ate it up, and love him now.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Many are new blood having no idea what Microsoft used to be. Add to that the modern good-guy MS face, funding (usefu for theml) open source and all that, and it gets difficult to convey how things used to be.

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

you know that batman quote "you either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain"? well with billionaires its backwards apparently

[-] TheOubliette@lemmy.ml 38 points 1 day ago

Bill Gates? The Epstein guy?

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 37 points 1 day ago

An Epstein guy.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 13 points 23 hours ago

Now to be fair, they're both Epstein guys.

[-] WizardOfLoneliness@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

literally the first episode of the citations needed podcast details how Bill Gates uses his "charitable" foundation to support the privatization of education via charter schools

they have another two parter episode later on about how his "charitable" foundation uses "partnerships" with media organizations to launder its own reputation even as it spends to influence government policy across the entirety of Africa

[-] Commiunism@beehaw.org 7 points 21 hours ago

I love how the conversation went from "all billionaires are bad eat the rich!!" to "hey this good billionaire is talking smack about a bad billionaire, time to defend them from criticism because they did good thing"

[-] leftytighty@slrpnk.net 2 points 6 hours ago

that's liberals for ya

[-] Reddfugee42@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

As if one of them isn't a piece of shit?

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago

All billionaires are shit, but Gates is only an elephants diarrhoea, whereas musk is the sick triceratops' shitmound from Jurassic Park.

[-] ChickenAndRice@sh.itjust.works 37 points 1 day ago

Pretty much all of Reddit right now

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 24 points 1 day ago

Kind of surprised that Lemmy fell for it too.

[-] masterspace@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago

Fell for what? From all publicly available information, Bill Gates is an objectively better person that is putting his money to far better good than Elon and is an example of how billionaires should behave.

Does that mean that he's overall a net "good" person in the grand, karmic, life total sense? Hard to say, given the abuse that Microsoft perpetuated to become Microsoft, probably not, but that doesn't change any of the first part.

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 42 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Bill Gates is one of those secret elite Epstein list pedophile Zuckerberg-lizard people ruining and draining the planet. Gates wife divorced him for his Epstein escapades.

Running a big pharma company disguised as a charity and using his money to influence the WHO and WEF.

Elon Musk is a neo Nazi idiot who is too stupid to keep their schemes going and canceled USAID.

In terms of human casualties Elon is a lot lower than Gates. Because Bill Gates is competently evil.

☝️Case in point, LOL.

It isn't hard at all to say whether Bill Gates is an "overall net 'good' person" or not. He became a billionaire (which is an inherently exploitative act), and no amount of trying to whitewash his legacy with philanthropy after the fact can change that.
