It's rumored that the show's plot will include a time jump.

It's the only way to move the show forward. Season 2 built to a big conclusion and that story has a big focus on Angus McCloud's character. Sadly the actor passed away.

You could in theory recast but I just don't think it would work.

Plus, all these young actors are 3+ years older now and playing high school students just starts to look silly.
