Made a dumb mistake (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) by GuardYaGrill@sh.itjust.works to c/piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

One late night I opted to sign up to NewsDemon and abNZB to dabble into Usenet and done used my personal CC to authorize the payments, how screwed am I?

I obviously don’t intend to renew the services with this oversight, likely going to use prepaid visas from now on however, I have an itch that this will bite me in the ass.

Its fine, downloading isn't an issue. Uploading/seeding is where the legal issues arise. Source: Facebook told me so

You are t screwed at all. That’s perfectly fine to pay for legal tools using legal forms of payment.

Unless someone anti-piracy is combing through your statements, why would anything come of it? I use my debit mastercard for nzbgeek and vipernews and have never had an issue.

You really shouldn't use your debit card for anything other than withdrawing money at an ATM. Credit cards are safer plus you get rewards.

[-] princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 day ago

No. I'm not American, the rewards suck here, I'm never getting a credit card. My bank doesn't even offer them :)

Hi, fellow non-american here. I use a prepaid card for online shopping and stuff like this. If there are suspicious transactions I can burn the card and request a new one.

Some onlinebanks even let you generate a new card with the exact needed amout for every transaction.

I do have a seperate card for recurring payments that is easily cancellable.

I have never had a suspicious transaction, because the way payments work here (NL) they always need to be authorised, and recurring payments require a different authorisation that you can of course always cancel. You can't just take money by knowing the card number and cvv (which we also don't have (yet)).

That'd be like paying for internet service being used to screw you.

A usenet account is not in itself proof of anything.

Total non-issue. I'd be surprised if anyone can provide a single credible instance of this biting someone in the ass.

Not really an issue IMO.
