There's so many reasons trying to force companies to implement age verification is a bad idea, and "to protect the children" is a nonsense excuse. That said, it's kinda scary if a government can't regulate business behaviour when interacting with their citizens (who are inside the country).

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 13 points 4 weeks ago

They CAN regulate the company, if the people want it.

They clearly didn't

[-] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 5 points 4 weeks ago

The alternative, where a government can restrict the actions of companies in other jurisdictions is more scary.

[-] Evotech@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Yet it’s constantly done, like sure online gambling and marketing of drugs etc

[-] Evotech@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Why is that scary, it’s done all the time.

It’s probably a good idea not to have corporations just run rampant and do what they want

[-] tabular@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

We agree, I said "if they can't".

They have to fight this battle. Traffic was probably down 80% due to one cabinet member not knowing VPNs exist.

[-] nialv7@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

So just a conspiracy to funnel money into vpn companies then. /s

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 weeks ago

I doubt VPN companies paid off the French government

[-] Interstellar_1@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 weeks ago

First let's talk about your government. You've gotta do something before getting a reward.
