On this day in 1848, more than 40,000 French workers initiated the June Days Uprising after the state closed National Workshops that provided work to the unemployed, causing 10,000 casualties and 4,000 workers to be deported to Algeria.

The National Workshops had only been formed a few months earlier, when, on February 25th, a group of armed workers interrupted a session of the provisional government to demand "the organization of labor" and "the right to work".

In late June, the Second Republic began planning to close the workshops, leading to a national uprising. In sections of the city, hundreds of barricades were thrown up. The National Guard was sent in to quell the rebellion, and workers seized weapons from local armories to fight back.

The violence, which lasted just three days, resulted in more than 10,000 casualties and 4,000 participants to be deported to Algeria. Among the dead was Denis Auguste Affre, Archbishop of Paris, killed while trying to negotiate peace with an angry crowd.

The rebellion was successfully crushed, and the episode put a hold on revolutionary ambitions of radical Republicans at the time. In its aftermath, the French Constitution of 1848 was adopted, mandating that executive power be wielded by a democratically elected president.

The first president under this framework was Napoleon Bonaparte, who dissolved the constitution during his first term in office.

leaving aside the toxic narrative that romanticizes mental illness as some essential fire to the creative process, creatives (so like artists, writers, musicians, etc) are definitely more prone to mental illness right? like there just objectively is a (value-judgment-free) correlation there?

(no shade to my mostly-mentally-healthy creative brethren or my mentally-ill-but-not-particularly-creative brethren)

recently I've come to the conclusion that I bought the wrong motorcycle, and now I need to sell it to be able to buy the right one.

Naw not interested in a dual sport, I've basically learned over the past year that I have zero interest in going off road so I want a pure roadgoing bike with a long maintenance schedule.

When I bought it I remember there was a good condition Gold Wing selling for a little over $1k in my area, if I only knew then what I know now I would have bought that 100%.

What did you get and what are you getting

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I bought a Ural, and at the time (bout a year and a quarter ago) I was really excited to go off road adventuring, make modifications to it, and wrench on it - but now that I have the experience of doing those things it turns out I fukken hate all three of them lmao. Even putting my dog in the sidecar and going for a ride, which was fun the first few times, now every time I think about doing it I just get the feeling that my dog would rather go on a regular walk.

So with all that in mind what I want to replace it with is something relatively turnkey, nimble on the street, and with styling that I like (by far the hardest criteria). My top contenders right now are a Triumph Speed Twin or a Livewire One. I'm also looking at Maeving, which is by far the prettiest electric motorcycle out there, but idk if I can swing the limited max range and speed given where I live.

edit: oh and I haven't yet ruled out the possibility of just buying new front forks and taking the sidecar off to have a current-year Ural Wolf. That actually might be my cheapest and best overall option, since taking off the sidecar extends the maintenance interval pretty significantly (cuz the weight of it puts a lot of stress on the rest of the bike) and gives a big boost to performance...

[-] Wakmrow@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

I've got a moto guzzi v7 stone so I vote for the triumph lol. Also I wish I had a ural with a side car those are so pretty

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

I have mine in white with a blacked out engine, it's super pretty! Honestly the biggest reason why I'm hesitant to go with my idea of taking off the sidecar and running it as a solo bike is just how good it looks in its factory configuration.

Just one more bike, bro, just one more bike

Update on the construction happening near my house. The jackhammers were only used yesterday and stopped in the afternoon. It turns out it's not road construction - thank god. A neighbor is doing something on his lawn and driveway. Road construction in my state goes on and on and on. I just took out the garbage and I heard angry yelling coming from the workers.

"I told you not to [unintelligible]! But you(?) [unintelligible]!"

"I did what you [unintelligible]! [unintelligible and angrier].

It was simply too noisy where I was to make anything out. I wanted to eavesdrop but the only way I could would be to pretend I had to walk down the street and I figured they'd just stop yelling.

Did you know that the first account of a flying saucer didn't describe the UFO as being shaped like a saucer, but rather described the object as flying as if someone had thrown a saucer and it was skipping across the water. Our entire cultural understanding of what a UFO is was shaped by someone misunderstanding the first witness account.

it's so hot i can hardly think straight, why is this the busiest week of work i've had in months ooooooooooooooh

my boss leaves over a week ago

CEO goes on vacation for a week without telling me what the plan is

He comes back and says he's taking over my boss's role until we get a replacement

Says it'll probably take a while to find someone

I do not like this very much

there are members of a DSA caucus that are legitimately mad at and talking about filing a grievance against another DSA member for calling them crackers on twitter. there's no joke I could make that's funnier then the situation itself

the DSA is so funny nerds, i cant never get too angry at them

[-] DoomBloomDialectic@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

when i was shopping around for orgs before joining PSL, it's wild how - despite being a far more marginalized ideology - membership were immediately vastly more normal vs DSA. and when i say normal i don't mean it in like a boring conformist or ableist way, i just mean down to earth and empathetic and connected to/of the working class. (me and my comrades are plenty quirky & neurodivergent).

also it's insane to me the amount of infighting DSA slap fights i've seen play out on fucking social media/twitter, people call PSL a cult for "monitoring social media activity" but a serious org not having a social media policy is wild to me.

This just in: I have personally given Iran a nuke.

What if there was a fakenews comm, but the fake news posted was literally just current news headlines but reversed?

"American bombers drop bunker busters on Iran"

could become:

"Iranian bombers bomb the United States" (reversal of actors)

"American bombers don't bomb Iran" (simple negation)

"America signs non-aggression pact with Iran to not drop bombs on Iran" (completely opposed to reality while adding an element of irony)

I say it would be quite hilarious, imagine seeing a headline on a post like: "The USS Nimitz is still afloat and operational in the Persian Gulf" Then looking in horror to see on what comm it was posted. Bonus points if the comm icon is a black and white picture of an American politician looking at a newspaper and the comm name is something like "newsn't".

If I bought a worthless piece of land in the middle of nowhere for next to nothing at an auction just for the hell of it, is there anything I could do with it? Build a tiny factory? Farm 3 stalks of corn?

Edit: it is actually a house in a tiny rural town
