That's not petty, that's just being smart

[-] AgentOrangesicle@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Pettiness and pragmatism are two wildly different things. I'd also count her as pragmatic.

"Was." That's Abe and he was assassinated a few years ago.

[-] x4740N@lemmy.world 19 points 10 months ago

Wasn't the assassination due to some connection to a church if I recall correctly

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 19 points 10 months ago

Yeah, Moonies. I can't remember why him. The kid that did it, his mom was grifted 100k or something. That's all I remember though.

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 27 points 10 months ago

It was because Abe, like other LDP politicians, had an history of propping up the Church of Unification cult. The shooter picked him specifically because of a video of Abe speaking in one of their churches. Abe's family in particular has connections to the cult since the very foundation, and their ties to the LDP are something out of a "Like A Dragon"/"Yakuza" plot.

He was a big supporter I think.

[-] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 months ago

Most successful political assassination in recent memory. The shooter got everything he wanted and then some.

Inspiring, really.

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 10 months ago

Back in his first term

[-] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

As an English speaking American, I would attempt the same thing.

[-] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 9 months ago

"This person doesn't speak ~~English~~ American, must be an illegal immigrant" -ICE

[-] Naich@lemmings.world 10 points 9 months ago

Sometimes I wish I could not know English for 2 hours.

[-] udon@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

日本語を食べません

[-] Soulg@ani.social 14 points 10 months ago

I also don't eat Japanese

[-] Lowpast@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago
[-] udon@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Sucks to explain jokes, but this is internet recommended practice to avoid any kind of everyday trouble with Japanese officials etc. Use at your own risk

[-] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

I wouldn't utter a single word to that turd.

[-] xia@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I'm not sure I would call it "petty"... :)

[-] DirkMcCallahan@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

Is it possible to learn this power?

[-] danekrae@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago

Anybody whose able to speak another language than english can do it.

But that does exclude a lot of americans.

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

you don't even actually have to speak another language. just make shit up. babble like a fundie "speaking in tongues" and repeat "no speakey eni englche"... helps if you can go a little castor-eyed and pull out the crazed weirdo look.

[-] Lemminary@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

But please don't try that with bilinguals. We may not understand you but we have plenty of experience knowing what a foreign language sounds like.

I've had two people pull that shit on me and all they did was lose my respect for thinking I'm that stupid.

[-] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

While I get what you're saying, I'm not sure whether people who are pretending to speak another language in order to avoid talking to you really care after they have your respect.

[-] EtherWhack@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

You only need a couple of phrases (and a practiced accent/pronunciation) to seem believable enough for them to give up

[-] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

This. The sayings we all know can easily be repurposed. I am sorry I don't speak [english]. No I do not understand you. Thank you. Where is the train.

I may have done this to American tourists in Europe.

[-] Kyle_The_G@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

[-] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

"No hablo ingles"

"Quieres visitar El Salvador?"

[-] breecher@sh.itjust.works 6 points 9 months ago

That is the opposite of being petty.

[-] DiaDeLosMuertos@aussie.zone 5 points 9 months ago

I'm on public transport and I just giggled. Love it.
