Privacy friendly ftw. I'm not satisfied with the amount of post processing mine does to images, I have little to no control over it. It's like it adds very aggressive blur and sharpen filters for everything, and when you zoom up everything looks "blobby".

My previous phone took way better photos, and I still use it if I need something looking a bit better. But it would be nice if I could just take decent photos with what I got, since I don't always carry my old phone everywhere.

Suggestions?

Suggestions?

Yes, just the one: Just now it's only clear you are unhappy with a phone and not much more than that.

Try to clarify your question to get helpful answers ;) What's your old phone? What's the new one? What O/S? What app do you use now and before? etc

I don't understand why this matters that much- my old phone is a Motorola g8 plus, current one is a moto g84 5g and is about a year old. The camera isn't the selling point for either but I would expect at least similar quality since it's considered an "upgrade"(not that I had a choice there).

Default camera apps for both, Android obviously.

Maybe because some apps will only work on certain phones (say on iOS or Android) and maybe because depending the phone you are using maybe someone could suggested another solution than switch app? ;)

Have you tried Open Camera?

[-] Mothra@mander.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

I just did, it appears to be a minor improvement over the default but I have less manual controls. Not bad for the time being

[-] quediuspayu@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

What manual controls are you missing? Because here I have more manual controls than what I can ask for.

[-] Mothra@mander.xyz 1 points 1 month ago

No, I've never tried any camera app other than the default

I tested a couple recently and chose Fossify Camera as the most usable. It's pretty quick, takes decent pictures, and has a good interface.

Fossify is a group that has a number of very high quality apps that are generally as good or better than other open source alternatives.

If you can find a working port of Google Camera mod, that’s by far going to give you the best image quality, though it does a lot of post-processing - in a good way.

And just to be clear, I’m not talking about the one you find in the Play Store. I mean the Google Pixel camera app that you can sideload through your browser. As far as I know, these versions don’t communicate with Google servers.

Alright, I'll have a look

I'm in my 40s and awful with tech can anyone ELI5 a camera app?

[-] TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

When you take a picture with your phone, you’re opening up the stock/default camera app to do so. There are alternative camera apps in the App Store/Google Play that offer different features.

[-] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

Ahhh I didn't know! What kind of features?

[-] cRazi_man@europe.pub 2 points 1 month ago

Mostly manual controls of the settings of the picture (exposure, etc) and might have options to change how a picture is taken like burst picture (repeated pictures in quick succession). Some apps have picture overlays (like putting a frame around the picture or something). There can be all sorts of features that are either focused on photography experts, or very casual fun (filters and goofy fun objects in the pictures).

That's perfect for taking cat photos! Thanks for explaining it
