Hi all!

I have a linux VPS that I rent in Germany. I use it for random projects and stuff, and I thought about hosting a Minecraft clone on it specifically for beehaw!

The opensource framework I used is called Luanti. In that engine there are lots of implemented games to choose from, I choose Mineclonia as it seems very popular and well supported.

The server used "beehaw" as map seed, and is currently running at the following IP: 212.227.170.117, port number is the default 30000 for Luanti.

How do I join? Just download the Luanti client, go to "Join Game", fill in IP and port and register using your desired username and a safe new password.

I don't have a URL for it yet and it is also invisible in the server browser of luanti, but you should be able to register using the IP. Looking forward to seeing others appear. This is a first experiment, so don't be angry / sad if stuff breaks or gets lost. I just thought it would be fun to have a game to hang out in :). There is a maximum of 16 concurrent players at the moment. This is the default, I have no idea if the server can handle more or less! Also, please be kind in there. I am unable to moderate this place. If nasty stuff happens there, I might be able to block some people but I would probably just have to nuke the server!

Please don't advertise this as being Sanctioned by or associated with Beehaw site or administration. It's okay to leave up, and of course just fine for your seed of such ; just setting expectations.

Thanks.

I had no intention of doing so, just a fun side project that spun out of a previous post here a while ago.

I get that. I think my side projects get more work done than my actual work does! Have fun.

Cool, I'll check it out!

Hello, what a fun initiative!

Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work on mobile (android) because I couldn't figure out how to open my inventory (= no crafting, etc)...

I'll keep looking and if I find a solution I'll post it here.

There should be a menu-button with which you can open the inventory:

Thank you!

Was going crazy...

For some reason the word used by my languages translation just didn't make me think of in-game inventory but rather of app+mods-storage on my device.

Should probably think about that for a bit!

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 hours ago

Hmm, is there a way to improve that, like a different word that's normally used? I could probably contribute a fix for the translation to the project...

[-] kruffa@beehaw.org 2 points 4 hours ago

Not sure... It seems that the correct^1^ word is used, but I don't think I have ever played a game with an inventory in my native language (which luanti picked up from the system default language) so I just didn't think of clicking that button.

1: correct, as in used in other games for the translation of "inventory"

Oh wow, so it's kind of suffering from success, in that you might have understood it better, if it didn't have a translation for your native language... ๐Ÿ˜…

Is it possible to join the server with default Minecraft client (aka no Luanti)

[-] tal@lemmy.today 6 points 22 hours ago

No; they're similar games, but not protocol-compatible.

The Luanti client is a free download, though; Luanti is open-source.

[-] knokelmaat@beehaw.org 5 points 22 hours ago

No, I'm sorry. The point was specifically to use a free and open source project so anyone can enjoy it. It is close to Minecraft feature wise, but is still a separately developed thing.

ok cool, I installed it, and it started me near a village, I will explore later
