Image is of the Power of Siberia natural gas pipeline, which transports gas from Russia to China. This isn't an oil pipeline (such as the ESPO) but I thought it looked cool. Source here.

Trump has recently proposed a 500% tariff on goods from countries that trade with Russia, including India and China (who buy ~70% of Russia's oil output), as well as a 10% additional tariff on goods from countries that "align themselves with BRICS." Considering that China is the largest trading partner of most of the countries on the planet at this point, and India and Brazil are reasonably strong regional players, I'm not sure what exactly "alignment" means, but it could be pretty bad.

Sanctions and tariffs on Russian products have been difficult to achieve in practice. It's easy to write an order to sanction Russia, but much harder to actually enforce these sorts of things because of, for example, the Russian shadow oil fleet, or countries like Kazakhstan acting as covert middlemen (well, as covert as a very sudden oil export boom can be).

Considering that China was pretty soundly victorious last time around, I'm cautiously optimistic, especially because China and India just outright cutting off their supply of energy and fuel would be catastrophic to them (and if Iran and Israel go to war again any time in the near future, it'll only be more disastrous). Barring China and India kowtowing to Trump and copying Europe vis-a-vis Nordstream 2 (which isn't impossible, I suppose), the question is whether China and India will appear to accede to these commands while secretly continuing trade with Russia through middlemen, or if they will be more defiant in the face of American pressure.

Guatemala rejects recent U.S. memorandum against Cuba - Prensa Latina

Article

Guatemala City, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) The José Martí Cuba Solidarity Coordinating Committee in Guatemala today expressed its deepest concern and energetic rejection of the recent U.S. memorandum against the Caribbean island.

In a press release, the organization stressed that this new measure by President Donald Trump intensifies the already prolonged and cruel economic, financial and commercial blockade against the Antillean country, something that has punished its population for decades.

He considered that this policy, sustained for more than sixty years, is not only a flagrant violation of International Law, but also transgresses the fundamental principles of respect for sovereignty, self-determination and peaceful settlement of disputes.

“The blockade has been an insurmountable obstacle for the integral development of the Cuban people, generating unjustifiable humanitarian and social impacts that directly affect access to essential medicines, basic foodstuffs and crucial technologies,” he pointed out.

Families suffer the consequences in a palpable way in their daily lives, she remarked in the text sent to Prensa Latina.

As coordinator, she joined the innumerable international voices that, “in a constant and majority manner, have demanded in the United Nations General Assembly the immediate and unconditional cessation of this blockade policy”.

The persistence of this measure is even more regrettable considering that, year after year, the overwhelming majority of UN member countries have condemned it and voted systematically in favor of its lifting, she said.

It is evident that, after more than six decades, the blockade failed in its objectives, as it proved to be an ineffective and counterproductive policy that only served to worsen the suffering of the population, without achieving a significant change in the model of the island, he added.

It reiterated its unwavering solidarity with the people and government of Cuba, while reaffirming its commitment to foreign relations based on constructive dialogue, genuine cooperation and mutual respect among all nations.

The Coordinating Committee finally urged the international community to redouble its diplomatic efforts to press for the lifting of this measure, which it described as anachronistic.

Obesity, Illness, and Mortality on the Rise Among U.S. Children - Telesur English

Article

Between 2007 and 2022, a child in the U.S. was about 1.8 times more likely to die than peers abroad. U.S. children today weigh more, battle more illnesses and face higher odds of dying than youngsters just a generation ago, according to the most extensive review of pediatric well-being published in nearly two decades.

The study, released Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), tracked 170 separate health indicators drawn from eight national data sets that stretched back to 2002.

“All of them point in the same direction: children’s health is getting worse,” lead author Christopher Forrest of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia said.

Researchers found that obesity among 2-19-year-olds climbed from 17 percent in the 2007-2008 survey cycle to about 21 percent in the 2021-2023 cycle.

Electronic medical records covering more than 1 million young patients showed that diagnoses of at least one chronic condition, such as anxiety, depression, or sleep apnea, rose from roughly 40 percent in 2011 to 46 percent in 2023. A separate parent survey recorded a 15-20 percent jump in the risk of any chronic illness since 2011.

Mortality statistics drew an even starker contrast with other wealthy nations. The JAMA editorial noted that this survival gap left the United States at the bottom of child health rankings among advanced economies, including Canada, Germany and Japan.

Between 2007 and 2022, a child in the United States was about 1.8 times more likely to die than peers abroad, the study reported. Premature birth and sudden unexpected infant death dominated the figures for babies, while firearm injuries and road crashes took the heaviest toll on children and teenagers.

Warning signs emerged in mental health as well. Rates of depressive symptoms, loneliness, difficulty sleeping and limits on physical activity all climbed during the study period. “Kids are the canaries in the coal mine; they absorb social stress earlier and more intensely than adults,” Forrest said.

In a linked editorial, pediatricians Frederick Rivara and Avital Nathanson argued that protecting children will require stronger injury prevention, maternal health and vaccination programs and a concerted attack on the social conditions that undermine young lives.

They cautioned that cutting public health budgets, delaying infrastructure fixes or fanning anti-vaccine sentiment would move the country “in the wrong direction.”

The authors did not blame a single cause for the downturn. Instead, they pointed to the combined impact of diets packed with ultra-processed food, patchy access to medical care, unsafe neighborhoods and widening economic inequality. Forrest urged “neighborhood-by-neighborhood action plans that treat children’s health as a community responsibility.”

Although the United States spends more per person on healthcare than any other nation, the study concluded that reversing the slide would demand investments far beyond clinics, into schools, housing, transport, and social services, before today’s warning signs become tomorrow’s adult crises.

Spain’s Far-Right VOX Party Calls for Mass Deportation of Immigrants - Telesur English

Article

The third-largest force in Parliament seeks a ‘Remigration Process’ that could affect up to 8 million people. On Monday, Samuel Vazquez, president of the group “A Police Force for the 21st Century” and VOX’s spokesperson on immigration issues, described mass deportations as the “least bad” solution to rising immigration.

VOX lawmaker Rocio De Meer indicated that the party’s proposal could involve “more than 7 million” people, noting that “we must take into account the second generation.” She said many arrived in Spain in a very short period and come from diverse backgrounds, which makes it “extraordinarily difficult for them to adapt to our ways and customs.”

“All these millions of people, who came very recently and have not adapted to our customs—and in many cases have been involved in public safety incidents in our neighborhoods—will have to return to their countries,” she said.

“I did not say that 8 million must be expelled. We must expel as many as needed so that not a single Spanish family has to mourn for not having done so,” De Meer said in a post on social media.

The text, “This is what the far-right’s hate speech provokes among young people. This is VOX. In any democratic country, they would be outlawed and their leaders imprisoned.”

Santiago Abascal, president of VOX, said the party aims to expel all immigrants who commit crimes, live off others’ labor, attempt to impose a “foreign” religion, or abuse or disrespect women. VOX’s proposal includes deporting all unaccompanied minor immigrants, stating that “they need to be with their parents.”

“We don’t know how many there are. When we get into government, we will find out. And they will all leave,” the far-right leader emphasized, convinced that both Spanish citizens and legal immigrants will support the plan.

VOX’s spokesperson in Congress, Pepa Millan, said De Meer highlighted the evolution of immigration in Spain since the 1990s, and reaffirmed that the party wants it to be “legal and orderly, as well as in accordance with economic, social and cultural circumstances.”

“What VOX proposes is something already reflected in the immigration law and our legal framework,” she said, accusing the Spanish government’s open-door policy of rendering the laws “meaningless.”

Miguel Tellado, secretary of the conservative Popular Party, however, made it clear that his party does not support VOX’s proposal for mass expulsions of undocumented immigrants.

“There are mechanisms for regularization for all those who have come to Spain and have already been living with us for some time. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight against irregular immigration, which is indeed a problem,” he said.

Amnesty rejected for those accused of State crimes in Peru - Prensa Latina

ArticleLima, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) The National Human Rights Coordinating Committee (Cnddhh) of Peru today rejected the approval of an amnesty for dozens of former military and police officers accused of human rights violations and tried or without sentences.

“Impunity does not hide the crime, it aggravates it”, stated the CNDHHH, pointing out that the amnesty opens the way to impunity for military and police officers charged in 600 trials for extrajudicial executions, torture and forced disappearances.

The measure was approved with the votes of 16 right-wing members of the Permanent Commission against 11 votes against cast by legislators of the left and center.

It also benefits senior citizens (70 years of age or older), which includes the perpetrators of the massacres of unarmed civilians in Barrios Altos and La Cantuta, under the iron fist government of Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) during the so-called internal conflict (1980-2000).

The promoters of the amnesty alleged that the trials against those now amnestied who fought against terrorism (as the armed groups that operated in the country are called here) have dragged on for 25 years or more without being sentenced.

Congressman Alex Flores refuted the right-wing majority by pointing out that the amnesty does not benefit those who fought against terrorism, but the bad police and military who committed serious human rights violations and their victims were unarmed civilians.

“Fujimorism and its allies have consummated an act of impunity that offends the victims, their families and the memory of the country,” said legislator Flor Pablo, alluding to the first minority of the Popular Force party, to which the promoter of the questioned measure belongs.

Progressive legislator Ruth Luque, said that the measure is used to favor President Dina Boluarte, investigated for civilian deaths at the hands of military and police during the prolonged protests against her ascension to the Presidency, by succession, in December 2022.

The center-right legislator Francis Paredes pointed out that the decision of the Permanent Commission -in charge of the Legislative due to the recess of the full Congress- was too fast and should have waited for the resumption of the plenary sessions for a broader debate.

Lol even BBC news (tv) is saying that the 500% tariffs against anyone trading with Russia are not going to happen because it would mean Russian oil/gas would have to completely come off the international market and it would cripple supply globally.

The president of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, spoke to Lula by telephone as soon as Donald Trump released the letter sent to the Brazilian president in which he informed him that he had imposed a 50% surcharge on all Brazilian products exported to the US. Trump took the measure to put pressure on the STF to close the case in which Bolsonaro is accused of attempting a coup d'état in Brazil.

The magistrates agreed with Lula that only the Presidency of the Republic and Itamaraty will respond to Trump. The decision is based on the assessment that Trump is promoting an attack on the country, and not on a specific institution. Some of the magistrates believe that Trump is using Bolsonaro as a pretext, but that he actually wants to weaken Brazilian institutions in general. The regulation of big tech and Brazil's good relationship with China would be Trump's real reasons for attacking the country.

Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari dies at age 82 - CNN

Article

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military general who campaigned on rooting out government corruption, has died at age 82, the presidential press office said in a statement on Sunday.

He died in London at about 4:30 p.m. after a “prolonged illness,” according to the statement.

Nigeria’s current president Bola Ahmed Tinubu offered his condolences to Buhari’s wife and ordered his vice president to travel to the UK to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.

Tinubu hailed Buhari’s legacy as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman” with a “deep commitment to the unity and progress” of his country.

“He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential. He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu said.

Buhari was elected president in 2015 after running unsuccessfully three times. He was re-elected for another four-year term in 2019.

A former general who first came to power in a 1983 military coup only to be overthrown by another military coup two years later, Buhari will be remembered for his strong anti-corruption agenda in a country famously described as “fantastically corrupt” by former British prime minister David Cameron. Others laud his tough stance against the Boko Haram insurgency and security issues that plagued the northeast of the country for years.

A Fulani Muslim, he was born in Daura, Katsina state in Nigeria’s northern province in December 1942 and completed military training in Kaduna state, Great Britain, India and the United States.

He first came into political prominence in 1975 after a military coup that overthrew then-ruler Yakubu Gowon. Buhari was made military governor of Borno state – a state plagued by Boko Haram.

Buhari, who was married twice and has ten children, was part of Nigeria’s ruling establishment both as a military ruler and later a “reformed democrat” as he called himself during the 2015 election campaign, which he won by a landslide.

Nigerians lined the streets celebrating his victory; however, the honeymoon didn’t last long as many believed he squandered his goodwill by being too slow in his presidential actions.

He took six months to appoint ministers to his cabinet and then failed to act quickly to tackle the country’s economic crises, which was in part brought about by a weak currency and falling global oil prices.

For months, Buhari refused to devalue Nigeria’s falling currency, the naira, and weakened investor confidence. This further led to a gulf between the official and black market exchange rate.

According to economic analyst Bismarck Rewane, one of Buhari’s failings was his limited understanding of modern economics and markets policies, which plunged the country into recession. This lack of understanding was rooted in paranoia and suspicion after he was overthrown during his first military rule, according to Rewane.

He said: “In 1983, Buhari felt he was swindled when he was asked by the IMF to devalue the Naira and remove subsidy. Three weeks later there was a coup against him. Since then he has been suspicious of free market policies and he took a long time to do things. When he did do them, the impact was too little too late and not optimal.”

Rewane, who met President Buhari several times on the campaign trail and gave him some policy advice after his victory, says Buhari will be remembered as a “strong and principled leader.”

“He was a very unique governor,” Rewane told CNN. “Some people will say he was rigid, he didn’t shift when he believed in something. But I see that as a good thing. He had a strength of character is very rare in this part of this world. People here are too flexible and corrupted.”

Buhari’s first term was characterized by war on many fronts, including the Boko Haram insurgency, the secessionist pro-Biafra movement in the east of Nigeria and rampaging Fulani herdsmen across Nigeria.

Despite growing concerns around the country’s security situation, Buhari was reelected in 2019. During his second term, furious protests against police brutality erupted across the country, decrying reported incidents of kidnapping, harassment, and extortion by a controversial police unit.

Buhari vowed to do more to fight militant groups and fix the economy as the demonstrations turned deadly and continued to simmer for the remainder of his presidency.

In his final UN speech in 2022, Buhari criticized the “corrosive” effect” of fellow leaders who extend term limits to cling to power. The next year, he praised his successor and fellow party member Tinubu as “the best person for the job.”
