Image is from this article, of a Chilean copper quarry.

Title is a reference to Trump's social media post about copper, which was, as usual, mostly deranged.

Trying to follow Trump's administration is pretty difficult, but as of right now, he is threatening 30% tariffs on Mexico and the EU starting on August 1st, as well as new tariff announcements on a bunch of other countries (including, bizarrely, a 50% tariff on Brazil), and also apparently a 50% tariff on copper, which the US imports half its supply of and is, of course, a very important metal in many applications.

I'm not sure what the plan is to bring back domestic copper production beyond hoping that it just sorta works out, but prominent copper producers, such as Chile and Canada, seem both concerned and confused. Reuters had a line that made me chuckle:

Boric said he was awaiting official communication from the U.S. government, including whether the tariffs would include copper cathodes, and questioned "whether this will actually be implemented or not."

Big mood, Boric.

In a direct reference to President Donald Trump, Lula was emphatic: "We don't accept anyone, from any country outside Brazil, meddling in our internal problems. This is the first time in the history of this country that we have three four-star generals in jail. And they're not in jail for nothing. They're in prison because they tried to stage a coup. And they're going to be tried, not because Lula wants them to be. They're going to be tried on the basis of the case file."

The president compared the Brazilian situation to the attempted coup in the United States in 2021: “If Trump had tried here in Brazil what he did on Capitol Hill, he could also be arrested.” Lula continued in a confrontational tone. "It's not a gringo who's going to order this president of the Republic. I know who I have to respect in this country. That person's name has only four letters: his name is the Brazilian people."

Belgian court bans further transit of all military equipment to Israel in landmark ruling

https://pers.11.be/belgian-court-bans-further-transit-of-all-military-equipment-to-israel-in-landmark-ruling

In its ruling, the court immediately prohibits the Flemish government from authorizing any new transit to Israel. Since 2009, there has been an agreement that no arms strengthening Israel's armed forces would be exported — a policy that in practice has been severely undermined. To enforce the ban on new transits, the court has imposed a penalty of €50,000 per shipment that still leaves for Israel. The judge criticized the Flemish government for providing little to no information and stated that Flanders gave the impression it "did not have the situation under control." This passive attitude is particularly problematic given the “crushing responsibility,” the judge said.

Trump has been diagnosed with Chronic venous insufficiency

Idk what that means though but I hope he suffers trump-anguish

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 31 points 5 days ago

Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when your leg veins don't allow blood to flow back up to your heart. Normally, the valves in your veins make sure that blood flows toward your heart. But when these valves don't work well, blood can also flow backwards. Chronic venous insufficiency is not life-threatening; if ignored, however, it can lead to serious complications. These include leg ulcers, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis and secondary lymphedema, which is swelling in the tissues due to damage to the lymphatic system

I always thought the whole "Russia is baiting Ukraine into a war of attrition what a smart strategy" thing was dumb, because who wants to get into a war of attrition? Especially when you're trying to make the land you're taking a part of your country, you're going to have to rebuild all of that depopulated land. I don't think they could have avoided it but it's not a good thing to spend years and thousands of lives grinding through fortifications, even if you're the Russian army and you have to go through a mandatory set of purges for incompetence in the first 2 years of any given war.

also who remembers the T-14 Armata? that was fun

[-] Tervell@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

because who wants to get into a war of attrition

Someone who wants to actually defeat their opponent for good.

What did American shock-and-awe campaigns actually accomplish? A decade-long counter-insurgency quagmire, and the Americans eventually just picking their bags up and fucking off? Conversely, why did post-WW2 Germany not see any notable insurgency, despite being a state with one of the most radicalized populations in history, complete with dedicated genocide squads and indoctrinated child soldiers? Because they were defeated not in a lightning-fast campaign, but in a brutal years-long war of attrition, which, in the end, left the majority of German men either dead, crippled, or captured - there was no-one left to fight (until a nascent NATO released a whole lot of those prisoners, so they could again be used against the Soviets).

A timeline where the initial Russian offensive works and Ukraine surrenders is a timeline where Russia gets its own Iraq, except it's not halfway across the world - it's on their doorstep. It's a timeline where Azov ghouls, not having been slaughtered in a long war, are driving vans into crowds in the Donbass and setting off car bombs, where schools are being shot up, where there's a dozen Crocus City Hall attacks, where there's a constant trickle of covert Western support (that, unlike the current shipments of tanks and planes and missiles, cannot be found and destroyed on the battlefield).

How often, in history, has an opponent actually been truly defeated, not set back for a couple of years, but thoroughly removed as a strategic threat, by a quick military campaign?

There's this bit from a Big Serge article which stuck with me

Much is always made of Russia’s propensity for “suffering”, with interpretations ranging from a romantic Russian-patriotic notion of sacrifice for the motherland to an anti-Russian criticism of the Russian tolerance for casualties. Perhaps it means both: the individual Russian soldier is more willing to sit in a freezing trench and trade shells than his adversary, and the Russian state and people are able to lose more and last longer in the aggregate.

I rather think, however, that Jünger’s metaphysical “titan of suffering” is not so metaphysical at all. It rather refers to a mundane power of the Russian state, namely its excellence and willingness across the centuries to mobilize huge numbers of men and material for war, at the expense of other social goals. War with Russia sucks. It means mass casualties, cold trenches, scarred earth, and long nights of shelling. The Ukrainians have coped with this as well as anyone (because they are themselves quasi-Russian, however much they deny it), but it is an awful thing to trade shells for years on end. The Russian power of suffering is to willingly fight wars that devolve into bat fights, knowing they have a bigger bat.

also who remembers the T-14 Armata? that was fun

Russia ditching a wunderwaffe and re-focusing on producing well-proven and reliable equipment is, if anything, a testament to them being smart, and adapting well to the conditions of the war. It's the "Germany should have just ditched the Tigers and made more Panzer IVs" hypothetical playing out in real time (although admittedly, Nazi Germany's case is a bit more nuanced, since even if they had made larger numbers of cheaper tanks, they wouldn't have actually had the manpower of fuel to use them - so making a smaller of amount of more capable vehicles was perhaps the right choice for them, or at least it would have been if said vehicles actually were capable and didn't tend to break down before even getting to the battlefield).

Conversely, Western militaries are just sticking their fingers in their ears about this whole war - they mocked "cope" cages for a couple years, until they started installing them themselves. They're still doing the "drones aren't a problem, we'll just knock them out of the sky with jamming/lasers/magic" cope, years on. They just whipped out a microwave cannon (which, well, hope you're one of the maybe 10 units that gets one of these, sucks to be all the other guys who have nothing and still get blown up since something like this would be exorbitantly expensive to field and deploy), and the batshit new Army manual about, uh... waving your hands frantically and shooting drones with tanks?! They're far behind on integration of drone teams, despite the fact that the Ukrainians are literally sitting right there doing it.

I don't think the primary plan was to go for a war of attrition. In my opinion the primary plan was to quickly enter Ukraine, encircle their capital city, and then Ukraine capitulates and signs the ceasefire/surrender document. The supply lines to Kyiv/Kiev, Kherson city, etc, were in no ways sustainable. Russia did not expect Ukraine to fight back (and a lot of this initial fight back from Ukraine was with minimal western military support), and that's where the initial invasion plan did not work. Russia is in a war of attrition now because that's the option available to them that has the greatest chance of succeeding, where Russia has the greatest advantages over Ukraine in manpower, stocks of equipment, self sufficient industry, etc.

The T-14 Armata tank fell into a lot of the traps military designs do, which is that it was designed to fight the "previous war". It took the lessons learnt from the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan/Global War on Terror, and applied them. Unfortunately, those lessons are irrelevant on the battlefield in Ukraine. There were also several serious problems with it, from the engine design to the planned optics. I think that Russia should scrap the project, which they've probably already done. Tanks need a rethink given what we've seen in Ukraine.

The smart thing was switching to an attrition strategy first. If this was always going to be a war of attrition, then Russia was the only one using appropriate tactics for a few years after the first push failed.

This ended up catapulting them ahead in the war of attrition - which they viewed as inevitable.

[-] companero@hexbear.net 27 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

The initial invasion went pretty well, all things considered. I'd say it was a military success. I think it was more of a political/intelligence failure that they didn't account for the US forcing Ukraine to continue the war at any cost.

After that fizzled out, they didn't really have a choice but a war of attrition.

Especially when you're trying to make the land you're taking a part of your country, you're going to have to rebuild all of that depopulated land.

If your interest is building a buffer zone between nato states and your most vulnerable border, leaving what once was the most fertile land in Europe a place that can sustain very little if no life is not a mistake, it's a goal. I am very suspicious of Russia's intentions towards the eastern Ukrainian nations, and I don't think they're interested in investing in them for anything other than military outposts. It's not that the nazi Ukrainian state was any better, but seeing how the current RF treats other peripheral nations within its territory, I'm under no illusion that the change in management will lead to stability or thriving in those regions.

maddened The portuguese socialist party has reached new levels of low, the socialist party mayor of Loures sent machines to demolish a neighborhood of 60 shacks where over 100 people live because they can't find housing anywhere else, much like many people in portugal. The mayor informed the inhabitants so late that they had little time to file a complaint, but they did and the district court ordered the demolitions to stop but the mayor has proclaimed that the demolitions will continue.

This prompted cries of condemnation from party members and hails of support from...also party members including the current socialist party leader, as well as from the right, which is cheering this on.

The communist party lost the mayorship of Loures by 3%(around what other parties left of the PS got) in 2021 after leading it for 2 terms, and since the socialist party took over not a single piece of new housing was built, there are local election later this year and this move is being seen as a pretty transparent campaign act to show "mercilessness" for people who build their own, technically illegal, housing to allegedly "skip over waiting lines", as well as a pandering move to the current extremely anti-immigration mood in portugal. Of note is that Loures is also where the far-right party leader got his start with a mayoral campaign when he was still inside the center-right party.

Portugal has a history of shack towns and neighborhoods, back in the estado novo period they were everywhere and it was seen as a success of the revolution that for years the central and local governments made efforts to relocate the people to proper housing BEFORE demolishing the shacks, so the return of shacks is a sign of how bad the housing situation is and the act of demolishing like this is a sign of how politically things have changed.

Cuban Labor Minister Resigns After Statements on People in Vulnerability - Telesur English

Article

‘The lack of sensitivity in the approach to vulnerability is highly questionable,’ President Diaz-Canel said. After reviewing the resignation request of Cuba’s Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marta Elena Feito Cabrera, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Council of State approved her release from her duties.

This followed her recent appearances before two parliamentary commissions — the Commission for Attention to Local Organs of People’s Power and the Commission for Attention to Youth, Children and Women’s Rights — which took place Monday ahead of the fifth regular session of the National Assembly.

“As a result of the analysis conducted by the Party and government leadership with Marta Elena Feito Cabrera regarding her remarks at the joint meeting of two Permanent Working Commissions of the National Assembly of People’s Power, the comrade acknowledged her mistakes and submitted her resignation,” the official statement said.

“This request was submitted to the Political Bureau and the Council of State, which agreed to her removal, based on the lack of objectivity and sensitivity with which she addressed issues that are currently central to the political and governmental agenda — one focused on addressing real and never-desired phenomena in our society,” added the statement, which was broadcast during the prime-time edition of the Cuban National Television News.

The day before, Feito Cabrera made remarks regarding people in vulnerable situations and dismissed instances of homelessness in the country. Referring to individuals who clean windshields on the streets, she stated: “No, that’s not a homeless person. That’s someone who has found an easy way to make a living at a traffic light, cleaning windshields, and possibly then uses that money to buy alcoholic drinks on the corner.”

In response, top political and government authorities voiced criticism via digital platforms. Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and president of the Republic, said: “The lack of sensitivity in the approach to vulnerability is highly questionable. The Revolution cannot leave anyone behind — that is our motto, our militant responsibility.”

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz also emphasized the need for great sensitivity in addressing the complexities of vulnerability and in seeking, with everyone’s participation, effective solutions to ensure no one is left behind. He described care for individuals, families and communities in vulnerable situations as a priority of the Revolution, highlighting humanism and social justice.

The situation in Syria is complex and deteriorating.

An agreement brokered by the United States last night is in place, which has led to Al Jolani/HTS official forces withdrawing from Suwayda and south of Damascus, and Israel ceasing airstrikes on HTS forces. However, this is not the end, as sectarian violence between the Bedouin and Druze is escalating, with reports of massacres on both sides, Druze factions "taking revenge" and sectarian violence against the Druze continuing, despite HTS withdrawal. Armed groups seperate from HTS, part of various tribes/clans or factions, could still go towards Suwayda, and the Druze would be vastly outnumbered. It's unknown what the Israeli response would be, or the response by other groups such as ISIS, who have carried out massacres in the region before.

Israel has begun airstrikes against Bedouin groups, according to Israeli sources

On NATO warning sanctions on India, China, Brazil over Russian trade, senior journalist Waiel Awwad says, "A lot of rhetoric coming from the US and the NATO forces because they know that war in Russia is going to be continued, and will send more sophisticated arms to hit Moscow. It seems the US President has given up. They wanted to isolate Russia, but they have failed to do so in the last 3 years. This rhetoric is about putting pressure on Russia.

Video: British police are using Palestine Action proscription to target even mentioning Palestine, Gaza or freedom in protests of any kind. If you tick off having 2 opinions that are associated with Palestine Action the police have reasonable cause to suspect you of support for a proscribed terrorist organisation and to act on that. For example supporting Palestine and wishing for Gaza to be freed meet this threshold.

Venezuelan and Colombian Diplomats Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Trade - Telesur English

Article

Previously, President Maduro proposed the creation of a Binational Economic Development Zone. On Wednesday, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil and Colombia’s acting Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio held a meeting in Bogota, where Gil reiterated the importance of boosting land trade between the two countries.

“In the meeting, we reaffirmed our commitment to continue strengthening bilateral relations in all areas. In particular, we emphasized the importance of enhancing the Binational Economic Zone to boost the economy and cross-border trade between our peoples,” the Bolivarian official said.

He also expressed President Nicolas Maduro’s support for the ministerial meeting held July 15 and 16, aimed at taking action in support of Palestine, he added.

Gil is currently in Colombia to attend a meeting of the Hague Group, which is discussing legal and diplomatic measures in response to Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Previously, in March, Maduro sent a proposal to Colombian President Gustavo Petro for a border zone of “shared development” between the two nations. At the time, the Bolivarian leader explained that the proposal includes the creation of a bilateral space in several border areas, such as the Catatumbo region.

The Bolivarian leader also said the plan involves joint investments in sectors such as agriculture, agribusiness and tourism, through a “public-private effort.”

During a speech in Tibu, a municipality in the Catatumbo region, Petro said he would speak with Maduro about a special economic zone along the border. Earlier this year, guerrilla violence in that region left at least 70 people dead and displaced more than 55,000.

Second Israeli ultra-Orthodox party to quit government in blow to Netanyahu

The ultra-Orthodox Shas party says it will leave the government in response to dispute over mandatory military service. A key partner in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government says it is quitting, dealing a major blow to the Israeli prime minister that could leave him heading a minority coalition in parliament. The ultra-Orthodox Shas party said on Wednesday that it was leaving the cabinet in protest against lawmakers’ failure to guarantee future exemption from military conscription for religious students.

“Shas representatives … find with a heavy heart that they cannot stay in the government and be a part of it,” said the group in a statement. It was not immediately clear whether the decision would leave Netanyahu with a minority in parliament. Without Shas, Netanyahu’s coalition would have 50 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.

Shas, which has long served as a kingmaker in Israeli politics, said it would not work to undermine the government once outside it and could vote with it on some laws. It also said it would not support its collapse. The departure of Shas from the government comes one day after another ultra-Orthodox party, United Torah Judaism (UTJ), resigned from the government over the same issue, which has prompted an explosive debate in the country after more than 21 months of war with Hamas in Gaza.

While ultra-Orthodox seminary students have long been exempt from mandatory military service, many Israelis are angered by what they see as an unfair burden carried by other groups who serve. The moves by Shas and UTJ come just before the Israeli parliament starts a three-month recess on July 27, giving the prime minister several months of little to no legislative activity to bring the parties back into the fold.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders say full-time devotion to holy scriptures study is sacrosanct and fear their young men will turn away from religious life if they are drafted into the military. Last year, the Supreme Court ordered an end to the exemption. The parliament has been trying to work out a new conscription bill, which has so far failed to meet the demands of both Shas and UTJ. Religious Services Minister Michael Malkieli, a member of Shas, said on Wednesday that rabbis were angered after Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein reneged on promises regarding the bill, according to a report in the Times of Israel. Malkieli, reading from a statement by the Council of Torah Sages, also hit out at actions taken by the Israeli military and attorney general to pursue draft dodgers, describing the move as “nothing less than cruel and criminal persecution against yeshiva students”.

France, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary don’t plan to participate in NATO program to purchase weapons from USA for Ukraine

Denmark and Germany have so far agreed to participate in the new format of arms supplies to Kyiv, proposed by US President Donald Trump, while France, Italy, the Czech Republic and Hungary have refused, Western media reported on Wednesday. In addition, Bloomberg noted on Wednesday that Europe increasingly feels the need to end its dependence on American weapons.

"Europe relies heavily on the US defense industry. However, due to trade tariffs, President Trump's attitude toward NATO and his lack of commitment to defending the alliance's countries, European countries will increasingly prioritize investments in their own defense complexes," the agency's sources said.

According to the European portal Politico, France has refused to participate in the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine. The publication's sources reported that the country's government intends to focus instead on increasing its own defense budget, which last weekend the president of the republic, Emmanuel Macron, promised to increase by 2027 almost twice as much as the 2017 budget. In addition, Paris wants to support European manufacturers who previously supplied Ukraine with anti-missile systems and other weapons.

Italy also does not intend to purchase weapons from the USA for delivery to Ukraine, but will continue to provide military assistance to Kyiv. Unnamed representatives of the Ministry of Defense told the ezine La Stampa - the department has never discussed purchasing American weapons for Kyiv. The ezine also notes that Italy does not have the means to carry out such operations. According to the publications’ sources, this problem is so acute that the only purchase from the USA that Italy has planned for the next ten years is a batch of F-35 fighters for its own needs.

The Czech government, in turn, stated that military aid to Kyiv would continue, but through participation in other initiatives and purchases from Czech, not American, manufacturers.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest does not intend to participate in the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.

Official consent to purchase weapons from the USA has so far been given by Berlin and Copenhagen. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen has declared his full readiness to join in the financing. The Dutch Foreign Ministry, in turn, said that it was considering the possibility of participating in the program. However, despite the government's positive assessment of the initiative, Amsterdam has not yet confirmed its commitment to direct participation in it. According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, it is expected that Sweden and Norway, as well as the United Kingdom, may join in the funding.

On July 11, Trump announced that USA’s NATO allies would buy weapons from Washington that could later be transferred to Ukraine. Rutte, during a press conference with Trump on Monday, called it "logical" that European countries would pay for the supply of American weapons to Ukraine. The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said on Tuesday that EU countries would prefer Washington to provide some military aid to Ukraine free of charge. "If we pay for these weapons, it means that it is we, and not the United States, who provide this military aid," Kallas said at a press conference in Brussels. She stressed that Brussels "would like to see a distribution of these costs."
