I think my next give up thing for self improvement is just gonna be reddit-logo right now I'm not even having a particularly trying time with it but I've given up so much already so why the fuck not. I don't know where this ends other than the hope I eventually feel happy after these decisions spoiler idk about that. Feel like I'm slowly ship of thesaurus myself replacing my worse habits with something else until I become someone different, I don't know what the end goal is yet and having to discover for any new part as I remove an old one does leave me anxious.

That's a good decision. I spend too much time on reddit, it would be better to spend that time reading books or playing the guitar. Do you have some activities in mind that you want to do in your new free time? If you're interested in habits, I recommend the book Atomic Habits. It's a decent book on quitting bad habits and forming good habits.

Writing for one even if it's just fanfics to start, and thank you for the link and easy download bunny-vibe I think besides the memes on reddit the one thing hard to avoid lingering there is for tech solutions the death of forums really means you gotta add reddit to the end of whatever question you have to find something.

Last month I finished training and while the job hunt hasn't gone great on accord of my ride being in limbo I have done amazing in personal growth. I've stopped one of my unhealthiest time sinks and then another recently and now I've free time to play or enjoy things again. It does leave me feeling vulnerable but guess that's just what comes when you tear yourself down to build yourself up

I also started playing lichess. I've got a lot to learn and will spend time every day on this one.

Logseq looks interesting, I need a new program for my notes so I'll try it out! I was using Evernote for free for a decade. Then they suddenly started asking for a bunch of money to continue using it (when the federal reserve turned off the free money printer) so I switched to OneNote.

I'm going for a short run tomorrow morning at 9:30am so you'd better stick to your plan as well! jerma-unhinged

Btw Sigur Ros is great, this is my favourite of their songs dubois-dance

Well, I fell off the wagon and I fell hard. I've been more or less in a chronic state of drunk or high for what feels like a few months now. Life is hard and I genuinely don't know how to cope without some substance. Everything sucks. We exist within a world plagued by demons that I have no possibility of vanquishing. There is a hatred within me that I can feel and it's growing every single day. I'm broke as shit and I don't have any great means of not being broke. All I want to do is buy a sailboat and just sail around and live

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 2 points 18 hours ago

Good to see you back comrade! I agree that everything sucks. I don't have any answers. But we're all together in the trenches. I think that being a leftist in practice means that we continue to fight even though we know that everything is fucked and there is no hope. But we still fight because it's the right thing to do in the moment solidarity

Went to the gym today for the first time in like a month, please clap jeb

Glad I went and am trying to reestablish it as a habit and hit a weight loss goal by the end of the year but it's frustrating how much progress I feel like I've lost since I was last going regularly

Job hunt not going as well as I hoped, despite my licenses and stuff. Considering my old work place as much as I hated it and getting fired and all... they got a position that requires some coding I can prob figure out well enough in a week or two. Mostly been feeling just stuck with also some car troubles been having hoping I can get some news on it today so I can plan accordingly.

It has taken me 6 months but i have finally got out of the habit of being high all day every day. It's such a relief i can finally socialize and get stuff done and i'm trying not to beat myself up for taking so long and just be grateful that im finally free again. I feel like it's gonna stick this time it's really obvious how much it depresses me when i'm in that state.

I've been doing my running at 4:30am, which is nice but there's not a lot of light. Forgot my flashlight at home and decided not to go back for it, which was a mistake because it was cloudy. I was fine until a section of trail that has a lot of tree cover. Tripped on something and smashed both knees on a rock.

Took a couple days off and had to ease back in with some lower mileage days. Back at it now and using a headlamp since it's getting darker each morning.

Managed to find some time to do stuff at home. Spent time with my partner, worked on a few home projects. I even took a couple hours to do hobby stuff. I'm working on upgrading my 3d printer so I can use klipper and input shaping to print faster and better.

Still haven't gotten around to counting calories, but I've been eating good stuff. Lots of raw veggies and boosting my protein intake with protein powder and cliff bars.

Had some random drug cravings this week, but my sobriety still feels strong.

This week I went running on 4 days in a row. It was great and I will try to run on 4-5 days per week from now on.

I think that running 5 days a week for 10 minutes in the morning is the best bang for your buck in terms of effort vs. rewards. It's not a huge time or energy investment, just 50 minutes per week. But the benefits are noticeable, especially in mood.

Running in the morning starts a domino effect where the first thing that you do after running is easier, which makes the second thing easier and so on. I try to keep that momentum going through the day.

[-] jarntotheelder@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

Nicely done! 5x10 is a lot easier to get in than 1x50, and those are great points about the mental health and the domino effect.

I have added you to the roll call, you will get a notification on next Sunday.

Is there some area in particular that you would like to improve or just in general?

[-] valium_aggelein@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

Just a handful of things: health/exercise, sober stuff, music, being a better read socialist. This will add a nice level of accountability rat-salute-2

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago

Those are great goals, I share most of them! My goal this week is to run on 5 days in a row (Mon-Fri), I already did two days so far. I also want to read more, especially before bed because then you get the added bonus of better sleep. What kind of music are you into? Do you play any instruments?

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago

Stickied good luck

[-] jarntotheelder@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago

Went for a 10 mile run, but the trail was two steep and technical so only ran 1/3 of it. What does getting in the roll call do?

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 1 points 5 days ago

Getting in the roll call (AKA based department based-department because striving to do your best is incredibly based) just means that you get a notification when I post the weekly thread.

I always post it on Sunday because it's the best day to review your progress from past week and set some intentions or plans for the next week. hexbear-chapochat

[-] jarntotheelder@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

Thank you. Please add me to the list!

[-] moonlake@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

Self Improvement

333 readers
3 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
