Remember when one of Starfield's pitchmen, in response to criticism that the game was boring and empty, said something along the lines of, "The astronauts who landed on the moon wouldn't say that the moon was boring and empty!"

And it's like, goddamn, you can't even say something like "It's meant to evoke the loneliness of space", just straight to "it's not boring, you're boring!"

It reminded me of Mass Effect 1 with the way the setpieces were continually recycled, except ME1 had the better combat and gameplay loop if you ask me. And it came out like 15 years before Starfield.

Oh yeah, because Mass Effect actually had some thought put into combat and world-building

Starfield is basically just "Remember Firefly/Cyberpunk/Stargate? This planet is reminiscent but legally distinct from it!" with Fallout 4's combat, but worse because they didn't even bother to make the weapons or enemies different from each other

I quit playing because I made a character to do unarmed combat and got like an hour in before finding out ohhh there's no unarmed weapons. Cool

I wanted to be space kenshiro punching things with like hydraulic power fists and they couldn't even give me that when their other fucking game is full of it

Someone made a post about how staggeringly bad it is lol

And story and was actually super cool for it's time

Yeah we’re talking as if ME1 wasn’t the coolest thing ever when it came out. It was a great game.

They were probably counting on modders. What they didn't consider was Starfield sucking so much not even the modders would care about it.

Theres actually a big full conversion Star Wars mod for Starfield that seems pretty cool… but I agree, Starfield is mid as hell. Meanwhile Baldurs Gate 3 is one of the best CRPGs of all time (and for loads of people, it’s their absolute fave). Starfield is a 5/10 while Baldurs Gate 3 is a 9/10 if not a 10/10. These two games aren’t even in the same ballpark.

I think they were counting on it being popular enough that they could drip feed hundreds of DLCs for years like The Sims. But then they forgot to make it even good enough for people to care about that.

Can't wait for TES6 to be even worse

I just watched the Fredrik Knudtson video about the Skyrim unofficial patch and its so hilarious that Statfield was so bad it broke the back of the effort to try and wrest control of the mantle "unofficial patch wardens for Bethesda games" from that asshole

The most sustained and intense discussion I ever saw concerning Starfield was the uproar from fanboys that IGN gave it a 7/10
