I work in water.

We have annual outlooks for expected rainfall. It's broken into three scenarios:

  1. Normal
  2. Dry
  3. Worst case

Rainfall is following scenario 3 perfectly.

I explained this to a farmer at a community event who was complaining that bad rainfall was ruining his business.

He responded that he doesn't believe the forecasts.

The fuck dude?

I work in water.

It’s been widely reported sea levels are on the rise for decades now. This one’s on you.

I know this was a joke but for anyone watching, desalination is really inefficient.

Yeah, I bet he believes in chemtrails. Anyway, what's the worst case?

Worst case is historic 80 year low rainfall over winter, followed by 'Green Drought' with flash floods in Spring followed by 'Fodder drought'.

I thought that was the case. It's similar from what I'm seeing over here in Slovenia, just not to that extent. Yet.

Not the person you replied to, so I think anecdotally, it’s that we didn’t get any rain for a month, then it rained like hell and flooded everything.

Yep, OP also said so. Thanks.

He responded that he doesn't believe the forecasts.

TL/DR: It's fucked. You're fucked. It's getting worse faster than expected.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
