Image is of a large protest in the Ivory Coast, sourced from this article in People's Dispatch.

This week's megathread is based largely on a detailed article from People's Dispatch, featuring statements and analysis from Achy Ekessi, the General Secretary of the Revolutionary Communist Party of Ivory Coast (PCRCI), brought to my attention by @jack@hexbear.net's comment in the last megathread.

The president of Ivory Coast, the 83 year old Alassane Ouattara, is aiming for a fourth term in power while barring out much of the opposition. I can't really do the all the history of how the situation wound up this way justice in a preamble as it's fairly complicated (read the article if you are interested), but to summarize, Ouattara is currently the only coherent candidate for the French to support. Back in 2011, the French helped Ouattara overthrow the previous (pan-Africanist) president, Laurent Gbagbo, and then arrested him and sent him to the ICC, and he was then acquitted and released in 2021.

Gbagbo is now running against Ouattara, but his base, the working class, has large swathes that are not present on the voting rolls and so it would be unlikely for him to win. On the opposite side of the spectrum is Tidjane Thiam, a former CEO of the Swiss Bank Credit Suisse, whose base is in the richer strata of the Ivory Coast, which overlaps with Ouattara's base. He would be more likely to win, but would certainly maintain many Western imperialist relationships. Ouattara, however, has simplified the electoral situation by simply barring both of them from running in the election at all.

Ouattara has, on paper, delivered some amount of economic development to the Ivory Coast. But as expected, most of it is funnelled to the bourgeois, as well as to foreign corporations and governments, while the working class are swallowed by the cost of living crisis. There has been significant infrastructure projects, but these have not only generated massive debt, they also have only really addressed the damage caused by the 2011 civil war and intervention by the French.

The rest of Western Africa has either entirely exited the orbit of France (Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso), are wavering/unstable (Senegal, Benin, Guinea), are beginning to show doubts (Nigeria, Ghana), or are economically weak enough to not be a major blow for the French to lose (Togo, Guinea-Bissau). The loss of the Ivory Coast would be a major setback for French neocolonialism, and be a potent example to nearby countries.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced on Monday the mobilization of 4.5 million militiamen in response to what he called threats from the United States. The Americans announced an increase in the reward for information leading to the capture of the Venezuelan leader and launched an anti-drug operation with military personnel in the Caribbean.

“This week, I will activate a special plan to ensure coverage, with more than 4.5 million militiamen, of the entire national territory, militias prepared, activated, and armed,” Maduro announced in a televised address, ordering ‘tasks’ in response to “renewed threats” from the United States against Venezuela.

The Bolivarian Militia is composed of approximately 5 million reservists, according to official data. It was created by former President Hugo Chávez and later became one of the five components of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB). The group acts as a support to the Army in the “defense of the nation.”

Wouldn't put it past the US to try and assassinate Maduro.

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 28 points 6 hours ago

Maduro have been purging the Army, Inteligency Services and Police force since the attempted coup in 2019. Cuba convinced Russia to send some troops to help Maduro and the loyalists. The only European leader, besides Putin, that sided with Maduro was Erdogan (who enjoys good relations with many left-wing leaders in latin america).

US deploys warships near Venezuela to combat drug threats, sources say - Reuters

Article

WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Three U.S. Aegis guided-missile destroyers will arrive off the coast of Venezuela in the next 36 hours as part of an effort to address threats from Latin American drug cartels, two sources briefed on the matter said on Monday. President Donald Trump has wanted to use the military to go after Latin American drug gangs that have been designated as global terrorist organizations.

The sources said the ships are the USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham and the USS Sampson. A separate U.S. official told Reuters that in total, about 4,000 sailors and Marines are expected to be committed to the Trump administration's efforts in the southern Caribbean region.

That U.S. official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the additional commitment of military assets in the broader region would include several P-8 spy planes, warships and at least one attack submarine. The official said the process would be ongoing for several months and the plan was for them to operate in international airspace and international waters.

The naval assets can be used to not just carry out intelligence and surveillance operations, but also as a launching pad for targeted strikes if a decision is made, the official added. Venezuela's communications ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Without referring to the warships, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Monday in an address that Venezuela will "defend our seas, our skies and our lands." He alluded to what he called "the outlandish, bizarre threat of a declining empire." Trump has made cracking down on drug cartels a central goal of his administration as part of a wider effort to limit migration and secure the U.S. southern border.

The Trump administration in recent months has already deployed at least two warships to help in border security efforts and drug trafficking. The Trump administration designated Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel and other drug gangs, as well as Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua, as global terrorist organizations in February, as it stepped up immigration enforcement against alleged gang members.

The U.S. military has already been increasing its airborne surveillance of Mexican drug cartels to collect intelligence to determine how to best counter their activities.

⭕️ Israeli army operates 'Legitimization Cell' to shape Gaza media narrative

The Israeli army is using a specialized unit known as the “Legitimization Cell" to collect intelligence from Gaza and enhance Israel’s public image.

Formed after 7 October, the unit focuses on gathering intel about Hamas’s alleged use of schools and hospitals for military purposes. It also identifies Gaza-based journalists who could be depicted as undercover Hamas operatives, in an effort to counter mounting global criticism over Israel’s killing of reporters, the most recent being Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, killed in an Israeli airstrike this past week.

The Legitimization Cell’s members are reportedly intent on finding journalists they could associate with Hamas and mark as potential targets.

For anyone wondering what the largest socialist party in the netherlands supports they've just presented their electoral manifesto for this year, titling it Super Social

Lots of good stuff in there obviously, although you'll start eyerolling a bit at the foreign affairs section

[-] jack@hexbear.net 26 points 10 hours ago

Really good economic, educational, and environmental stuff. Foreign policy is a grab bag and pretty limited, but I care more about ending support to Israel than Ukraine (cause Ukraine is gonna lose soon anyways). Why increase police funding though? Embarrassing.

[-] Gucci_Minh@hexbear.net 15 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Probably intimidation? IDK how Netherlands cops are but cops where I am will ignore their jobs and actively encourage crime to get worse if they even lose a penny of funding so they can turn around and go "guess you needed us after all" and proceed to play candy crush anyways.

Branko Milanovic on the still ongoing protests in Serbia:

The issue in Serbia is that the govt is not strong enough like in France (gilets jaunes) or China (Hong Kong) to put an end to violent demonstrations by using police/military means. Fear that greater repression will backfire (more people will come out), its international consequences, and not complete trust in police.

But the protesters are not strong enough to overthrow the govt.

So all the ingredients for a long conflict and a civil war similar to what happened in Ukraine after the coup in 2014 are there.

As I wrote in March, movement towards a civil war is inevitable esp. with Vucic's current tactic of not waiting out the protests but accelerating them using literal fascist cohorts. The irony is that he could easily win snap elections but is more comfortable living in permanent tension and strife.

[-] jack@hexbear.net 22 points 8 hours ago

Civil war seems like a gargantuan escalation from the current situation. What capacity or interest does the protest movement have to wage military conflict against the state?

Regarding their political objectives, aren't they still pretty incoherent libs?

[-] 0__0@hexbear.net 16 points 8 hours ago

He mostly has good takes when talking about the west, but ironically his analysis of the situation last time was rather lacking. He said that the protests weren't democratic, which is dumb considering that every revolution is inherently authoritarian, as Engels said. Not to mention he's probably the first one I've seen call the students the "Khmer Rouge", which is just fucking idiotic, comparing a bunch of young idealist kids to a literal genocidal regime. Not to mention the absurd irony of the Khmer targeting intellectuals, whereas they are the "vanguard" of this movement.

But on this I think he's mostly accurate. Now I don't necessarily think there will be a civil war, simply because pussylips doesn't have a realistic support base. Milosevic had one, but this guys' is entirely reliant on bribery and self-interest. His power simply lies in the fact that he's got every other part of the government by the balls. If any of the others show legitimate and substantial disobedience, be it parts of the army or the police, he's done for.

In the end, considering the recent synchronous cries of the Financial Times and Le Monde, I think the west is weighing their options in terms of him. If they continue with him, he can effectively deliver all of his promises, but they will have to contend with the possibility of major upheaval. On the other end if they do replace him, they won't have to deal with the people, but they will have to deal with the fact that all of his propaganda apparatus and grip on power will be destroyed in their wake, meaning the next government might not be as efficient on being servile dogs of the empire even if they really want to.

Ultimately, my take is that I would tacitly support his replacement (whilst immediately being critical of the next government) since he's really good at inflicting the worst type of psychic damage with his obviously braindead propaganda. At least a future EU puppet government could be opposed on intellectual grounds, rather than whatever the fuck this is. Just to give you an example, the protesters have been called both Bolsheviks and Nazis by the government media houses as an insult lmao. If I have to choose between classic neoliberalism versus this neoliberalism with turbofolk gangstercore characteristics, give me the first one any day of the week.

"My wedding on earth is the day of my martyrdom."

Yesterday's martyrdom operation in "Tel Aviv" came on the eve of the anniversary of the martyrdom operation of Raed Misk, who, on this day in 2003, killed 23 zionists and wounded 135 others in a bus in occupied Al-Quds.

Raed's operation shook the zionist entity, coming as part of vengeance for the martyred leader Abdulallah Qawasmeh. At 9:00 PM on that Tuesday, he set forth to the western part of Al-Quds for the first time in his life, boarded an "israeli" bus disguised as a settler, and executed his decision.

Born in Al-Khalil, he was raised in the city's mosques, having memorized the Quran at 15 years old. At that age, he was abducted by the occupation and imprisoned, during which his mother passed away. He married, had three children, and worked as a teacher. One day, while he was still a student, a teacher he admired asked him about his aspirations. Raed humbly replied, "To become like you, teacher." Years later, he told Raed, "God has granted you your wish and more."

Despite his role in the Al-Qassam Brigades, his family didn't know anything at all of his resistance activity. His conversations were focused on family and Quran (often quoting it in coversation), not politics, according to his wife Umm Mu'min. Deeply committed to his family, he was also known for relieving the hardships of others, often staying up until a person's need was fulfilled. According to his family, "his hand was always on his forehead due to the number of people he greeted" while walking down the street.

The first person to tell Umm Mu'min of her husband's martyrdom was her son, Mu'min. Ater returning from her brother-in-law's house, Mu'min said he had seen his father's picture on television, holding a rifle in his left hand and the Quran in his right, emulating the saying "This is how Ayyash taught us; to hold a rifle with a Quran." Mu'min said, "Mom, Dad went to Nablus, and from there, he ascended to Heaven."

Umm Mu'min described their last moments together, explaining that Raed had insisted on taking her and the children to his sister's house for a meal. He insisted that they stay the night; Raed's sister noticed that he spent the entire night praying, reading the Quran, and checking the windows and doors. It seemed as though he didn't sleep for a moment.

He told his sister he was going to Nablus to work on his master's thesis. "I might not see you again; I might be arrested or martyred." The day before his martyrdom, he distributed Quranic tapes to his family and friends, which he encourages them to listen to in his will.

At the decisive moment at 9:00 PM, Raed disguised himself as a settler, boarding Bus #12 that had just come back from the Western Wall. A 5 kilogram bomb was detonated, killing over 20 zionists and wounding about 150. Raed ascended as a martyr.

All who knew Raed rejoiced, but were affected by the loss of a great man, consoling themselves with the believe that Raed was under Allah's provision.

Afterwards, the zionist security apparatus was stunned by their failure to identify Raed, or even respond to the operation. Dozens asssociated with Raed were abducted, his home was demolished, and three mosques in which Raed taught were shut down. The zionists didn't realize that resistance does not stop at the martyrdom of an individual.

Today, the return of operations like Raed's marks a new phase in the struggle, shaking zionist foundations once more.

Below, excerpts from Raed's will are published.

Glory to the martyrs.

I recall recently coming across a self-proclaimed Estonian “socialist” on YouTube that not only claimed that Estonians suffered terribly under “Soviet totalitarianism” but were actually better off and happier today than they ever were under the USSR. They also said that Soviet-era boomers who were still nostalgic for the Soviet Union were all reactionaries that only liked it because it was supposedly more socially conservative (particularly towards women, which was the video topic) compared to Eastern Europe today lenin-dont-laugh

Suffice to say, not even “socialists” in post-Soviet states are immune to anti-communist propaganda from the successor neoliberal states.
