This week's megathread is based largely on a detailed article from People's Dispatch, featuring statements and analysis from Achy Ekessi, the General Secretary of the Revolutionary Communist Party of Ivory Coast (PCRCI), brought to my attention by @jack@hexbear.net's comment in the last megathread.

The president of Ivory Coast, the 83 year old Alassane Ouattara, is aiming for a fourth term in power while barring out much of the opposition. I can't really do the all the history of how the situation wound up this way justice in a preamble as it's fairly complicated (read the article if you are interested), but to summarize, Ouattara is currently the only coherent candidate for the French to support. Back in 2011, the French helped Ouattara overthrow the previous (pan-Africanist) president, Laurent Gbagbo, and then arrested him and sent him to the ICC, and he was then acquitted and released in 2021.

Gbagbo is now running against Ouattara, but his base, the working class, has large swathes that are not present on the voting rolls and so it would be unlikely for him to win. On the opposite side of the spectrum is Tidjane Thiam, a former CEO of the Swiss Bank Credit Suisse, whose base is in the richer strata of the Ivory Coast, which overlaps with Ouattara's base. He would be more likely to win, but would certainly maintain many Western imperialist relationships. Ouattara, however, has simplified the electoral situation by simply barring both of them from running in the election at all.

Ouattara has, on paper, delivered some amount of economic development to the Ivory Coast. But as expected, most of it is funnelled to the bourgeois, as well as to foreign corporations and governments, while the working class are swallowed by the cost of living crisis. There has been significant infrastructure projects, but these have not only generated massive debt, they also have only really addressed the damage caused by the 2011 civil war and intervention by the French.

The rest of Western Africa has either entirely exited the orbit of France (Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso), are wavering/unstable (Senegal, Benin, Guinea), are beginning to show doubts (Nigeria, Ghana), or are economically weak enough to not be a major blow for the French to lose (Togo, Guinea-Bissau). The loss of the Ivory Coast would be a major setback for French neocolonialism, and be a potent example to nearby countries.

zelensky-pain : "Our main goal is a reliable and lasting peace for Ukraine and for the whole of Europe. And it is important that the momentum of all our meetings lead to precisely this result. We understand that we shouldn't expect Putin to voluntarily abandon aggression and new attempts at conquest. That is why pressure must work, and it must be joint pressure – from the United States and Europe, and from everyone in the world who respects the right to life and the international order."

"We must stop the killings, and I thank our partners who are working toward this and ultimately toward a reliable and dignified peace. Together with the leaders of Finland, the United Kingdom, Italy, the European Commission, and the NATO Secretary General, we coordinated our positions ahead of the meeting with President Trump. Ukraine is ready for a real truce and for establishing a new security architecture. We need peace."

Both are right, surprisingly. Zelenskyy appears to be prepared to make some concessions, but not to fully withdraw from Donetsk oblast, rather preferring a freeze on the current frontline in all four oblasts, instead of a freeze along three oblasts + withdrawal from Donetsk.

The Canadian regime continues to violate human rights in the country. The Liberal junta which has held onto power for a supermajority of the country's existence has been denounced by international observers as constituting a one party state.

The unelected "Labour Control Board" has declared the striking of Flight Attendants illegal and seeks to force them back into unpaid indentured servitude. The union representing flight attendants has announced they will defy this order. It remains to be seen if the Canadian Secret Police will respond with the same violence seen in previous protests against illegal oil pipelines.

[-] Yllych@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

What is interesting to me here is that, through the government bypassing the normal collective bargaining procedures and right to strike in Canada, they undermined the usually ossified and conservative union leadership who I'm sure would have been happy to get some scraps for their members and hopefully keep their positions.

Now they're left in a position where they can either go along with Carney's orders and be made totally irrelevant to the union membership, or be forced to take a more radical approach but risk personal jail time/fines.

I'm surprised they took the more leftward tack, but we'll see how they hold when push comes to shove.

Also the irony in this quote from the bosses association is too good:

The employers' association Federally Regulated Employers – Transportation and Communications (FETCO) criticized CUPE's actions and accused it of "normalizing the idea that if you don't like a decision, you can simply ignore it."

So after all those times where workers went on strike, then were told by the bourgeois "that's actually illegal and we're gonna ignore you or arrest you", or were just straight up shot in this country, suddenly now it's not ok for our side to use that logic. Hmm ok sure, go ahead and hold on to that when you present your case before the People's Trials.

🚨 A Palestinian leadership source to Al-Mayadeen: — Hamas and Palestinian resistance factions agreed to the proposal of the Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

The proposal stipulates a withdrawal of 1,000 meters deep in areas north and east of the Strip, with the exception of Shuja'iyya and Beit Lahia.

In exchange for 10 living captives, 140 Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment and 60 sentenced to more than 15 years will be released.

The proposal stipulates amending the redeployment maps to the north and east.

Aid will be sent to the Gaza Strip immediately upon the agreement's entry into force, in intensive and coordinated quantities according to the January 19, 2025 agreement.

Aid includes fuel, water, electricity, rehabilitation of hospitals and bakeries, and rubble removal equipment.

The United Nations, its agencies, the Red Crescent, and international organizations operating in Gaza are receiving and distributing aid.

The proposal stipulates opening the Rafah crossing in both directions according to the previous agreement.

For every "israeli" dead body, 10 Palestinian bodies are released.

The proposal stipulates the release of all children and women.

On the eve of negotiations with the United States to decide the future course of the Russia - Ukraine war, Ukraine has publicly unveiled a new cruise missile: The FP-5 "Flamingo". An AP journalist posted a picture of the missile to his Facebook yesterday:

Test launch footage

Now is the missile an indigenous Ukrainian design? The answer to this question, as you can probably guess, is no. This is the Milanion FP-5. Milanion is a UK and UAE based defence company. So Ukraine has got the ability to locally manufacture these weapons, if I had to guess they purchased manufacturing rights from Milanion, and the purchase was funded by the EU, likely Germany. Germany did say that they had funded the manufacturing of 500 long range missiles for Ukraine by July 31st. Because it's a Milanion FP-5 and not an indigenous Ukrainian design, the specifications are the same:

Source - Milanion brochure

Most notable is the warhead weight of 1000kg, and the range of 3000km, along with high subsonic cruise speeds.

And as anyone familiar with WW2 history can tell, this is a modernised version of the V1 buzz bomb concept, fielded by Nazi Germany in WW2.

zelensky-pain : "I have already arrived in Washington, tomorrow I am meeting with President Trump. Tomorrow we are also speaking with European leaders. I am grateful to @POTUS for the invitation. We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting."

"Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East—part of Donbas—and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack. Or when Ukraine was given so called “security guarantees” in 1994, but they didn't work. Of course, Crimea should not have been given up then, just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022. Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for their independence."

"Now, our soldiers have successes in Donetsk and Sumy regions. I am confident that we will defend Ukraine, effectively guarantee security, and that our people will always be grateful to President Trump, everyone in America, and every partner and ally for their support and invaluable assistance. Russia must end this war, which it itself started. And I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force Russia into a real peace. Thank you."

A couple weeks back @xiaohongshu@hexbear.net asked me about the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and I was a bit too brief about the party and why any genuine scientifc socialist would not ever rally behind the party so I’m here to rectify it.

At first I would like to highlight a 2 part article that holistically addresses the party, in which I will also quote heavily from with further commentary below.

Kit Siang and DAP – a response to Lim Teck Ghee

DAP and a multiracial Malaysia – a response to Lim Teck Ghee

The main issue that the Malaysian Left grapples with today is that the “left” in this country are chauvinists. In other words, they themselves perpetuate racialism and deradicalized “socialism”. This has been persistent issue since the start of the 20th century. For reasons that have been extensively discussed by many here, communist and socialist politics (in form) never took root outside Chinese and Indians. This meant Malays, but also large parts of other ethnic groups, whether Orang Asal or even mixed Peranakans.

This then sets the stage for the DAP, the favourite scapegoat for some parts of the mainstream elite, who continuously accuses them of being Chinese communists. The problem is of course that the DAP itself has never strayed too far from the neoliberal mainstream even as the “key opposition” of “Malay supremacy”. (Quick note, it is often translated as “supremacy” but ‘Ketuanan’ also is commonly translated to “dominance” or “premiership”).

Kit Siang [the leader of DAP for most of it’s life] has been a dominant figure in the DAP for a number of reasons. One, it had the support of the urban Chinese voters in the urban Chinese belt stretching from Perak to Negeri Sembilan and with pockets of Chinese support in Melaka and Johor.

…He was able to articulate the Chinese electoral concerns in a forthright manner, in some cases openly courting a Chinese chauvinist line, both inside and outside the Dewan Rakyat [parliament] and as an editor of the Rocket from 1965-1969.

…The Malay chauvinism was countered by the blunt Chinese chauvinism of DAP. This was despite DAP’s lip service for a democratic and socialist Malaysia

No party in the current coalition are truly anti-racialism. Even for the “progressives”. That is the nature of bourgeois parliamentarianism.

…Teck Ghee falls into the same trap that Kit Siang has made for himself, a pretence of DAP’s multiracialism and then hidden undercurrent of unadulterated Chinese chauvinism. There is no point in making passing references to the late Karpal Singh to show that DAP has non-Chinese credentials.

… There were no Chinese legal firms that were courageous or competent to take the legal briefs from DAP. If they were, I am sure DAP would have turned to them. There was none forthcoming and hence that relationship was a relationship of convenience, between Karpal and (now his family’s legal business) and DAP.

The superstructure of the Chinese capitalist economy in Malaysia is an important consideration to know here. It involves clan associates, paternal relationships, conscious disengagement with other ethnic groups and in a lot of aspects, right-wing Chinese nationalism. This is because the 1949 Chinese revolution, or even a 1966 cultural revolution, never took place in this country.

Instead, Chinese capital became a useful “opposition” of Malaysian capitalism, in which race becomes the focal point instead of class struggle. This is why of the top 50 richest people in Malaysia, 48 are Chinese. This is where you get stories of Chinese landlords refusing rent to non-Chinese people.

The usual rant about discriminatory NEP and discrimination has outlived its political usefulness as an intellectual narrative. The questions now posed are what did DAP do when it was in power? Not just in Penang or some of the states where it shared power, but at the federal level when it was in power, albeit briefly.

This can be said even more now that the DAP forms a large part of the unity government in power. Just recently, a member of DAP argued for a two-tier minimum wage structure between migrant workers and citizens. I guess this is the bare truth of their slogan “Malaysian Malaysia”.

In the end, class struggle continuously remains the only avenue for anyone seeking for genuine anti-racism and social justice. “Multiculturalism”, in actuality, remains to be bourgeois social contract theory, lacking the scientific materialist outlook necessary for revolutionary and lasting social change.

There is no way the situation in Bolivia will end well. Both candidates are terrible, and even if it were a left-wing candidate, Evo would completely destroy any government in power. Either there will be a military coup in Bolivia or new elections soon.

[-] mkultrawide@hexbear.net 32 points 1 day ago

Civil war is on the table. I also would put good money on Evo having essentially punched his own ticketed for getting assassinated.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The right wing will probably use the sex trafficking charges pushed against Morales to try arrest him if the right wing takes power and he can't flee the country. That's also one of the reasons Morales is being holed up in Indigenous communities and being protected by them, there's currently a warrant for Morales' arrest over this. The right wing will try fulfill this arrest warrant.

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Civil war is on the table.

I doubt that this will turn into a civil war. I think it is more likely that there will be a lot of civil unrest until the government accepts defeat and makes a deal with Evo, as happened 2002 - 2005. My fear is that whoever wins the election will call in US troops/mercenaries to help crackdown on leftists (something Quiroga has promised to do, and Paz has said nothing about because he seems to be lib when it comes to social issues and social justice).

I also would put good money on Evo having essentially punched his own ticketed for getting assassinated.

Yes, although I can imagine that Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, Honduras, or Mexico would offer him exile if he wanted to flee the country.

Rodrigo Paz, a neoliberal, takes the lead in the exit polls in Bolivia's elections. If the exit polls are confirmed, the second round will be between Paz and Quiroga. Doria Medina falls to third place.

His slogan is “Capitalism for all, with 50/50 decentralization.”

He advocates for the “50/50 agenda,” 'radical' decentralization of the state, use of blockchain, foreign exchange fund, and universal basic income for women, combining reforms and liberal social justice.

He is the son of Jaime Paz Zamora, former president of Bolivia in the 1990s, a period also marked by austerity measures and privatizations. Paz built his career as a senator for Tarija, in the south of the country, and gained prominence by presenting himself as a voice for renewal, although his career is directly linked to traditional political families.

Jorge 'Tuto' Quiroga is a Bolivian politician and industrial engineer who served as the 62nd president of Bolivia from 2001 to 2002. He previously served as the 36th vice president of Bolivia from 1997 to 2001 under Far-Right Military Dictator Hugo Banzer and as minister of finance under Neoliberal Jaime Paz Zamora in 1992.

During the interim government of Jeanine Áñez, he was briefly appointed from 2019 to 2020 as the country's international spokesperson to denounce alleged human rights violations by the previous government.

He became president when Banzer resigned because of aggravated health problems (he died a year following his resignation). Quiroga assumed office as acting president on 1 July 2001 and was sworn in on 7 August, to complete Banzer's five-year mandate.

When his goverment collapsed in 2002, he blamed the USA and Europe. He said Bolivia had the most open economy in South America, and that he gave the Westerns everything they wanted, and that when he needed help and aid, they refused to grant him.

While Quiroga wants to sell Bolivia to the USA, Rodrigo Paz thanked Brazil for accepting Bolivia into Mercosur. Quiroga believes that Bolivia should have closer diplomatic and economic relations with Brazil.

Bolivia is going to elect their own Milei (He's going to sell Bolivia back to Brazil) agony-shivering

Evo called the election “illegitimate” and asked his supporters to annul their votes today, which further complicated the situation for the left in the country. Without Evo, the MAS has a very low percentage of the vote. The Bolivian left-wing candidate who attempted to break with Evo and Arce, young senator Andrónico Rodríguez, was booed and pelted with stones after voting in Entre Ríos by supporters of Arce and Evo. On social media, he did not mention the incident and simply said that voting is “hope and commitment.”.

This episode reflects the break with Evo Morales. A former protégé of the ex-president, Rodríguez decided to run as an independent candidate, which led to accusations of “betrayal” from Morales' supporters, even though it was Morales who refused to support him.

At the center of this dispute remains the figure of Evo Morales. Barred from running for office, Evo, who claims judicial persecution, launched a campaign for null votes, which reached 19.3%, the highest rate in Bolivian history. His strength on the streets and his ability to mobilize popular sectors still weigh as a factor of instability, even in an electoral landscape dominated by the right, and cast the former president as a constant shadow over the winner.

The Party of War has assembled what it calls a "dream team" to support Zelensky at the White House, where he is due to meet Trump on Monday.

Laura Ru writes

. > Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz embody the "two pillars of Europe," the French-German axis.

Ursula von der Leyen represents "Europe’s importance as an economic juggernaut and will remind Trump how small Russia’s economy is vis-a-vis the EU and the UK and other western partners”.

🔺Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is "a useful bridge: she counts Trump as a friend but also supports Ukraine."

🔺The Finnish president, Alexander Stubb "managed to establish an unexpectedly warm relationship with Trump and will offer the perspective of Russia’s closest European neighbour, urging Trump not to trust Putin." 🔺Keir Starmer represents Washington's key transatlantic partner and will remind Trump not to sour UK-US relations ahead of his state visit to the UK next month. 🔺Mark Rutte, the Nato secretary general, has "a proven track record of corralling Trump with honeyed words," at the Nato summit in June, he called him “daddy.”
