Given the number of people I know getting (or trying to get) treatment for depression, I think it's more likely a coping mechanism than a gimmick.

There are a large percentage of millennials that have spent their adult lives shambling between crisis after crisis caused by events entirely beyond their control. After a decade or two of ever changing shit keeping them down, the kind of humour that comes from someone with that experience is not really surprising.

Anyone that comes to that conclusion doesn't know what they're talking about, frankly. And more broadly, anyone that sees the world through the lens of strength vs weakness generally doesn't have much of value to say at all, so they're safe to ignore
