Good is the enemy of perfect

[-] Honytawk@feddit.nl 13 points 4 days ago

Perfection doesn't exist.

The universe is too complex to allow for perfection. It is like programming. You can code a perfect calculator because it is simple. But the more complex software you make, the more chance it has to have faults.

And since the universe is extremely complex, you can't have perfection anymore.

The only thing that is perfect is a singularity.

Are you telling me the only way to be accepted by society is to become a black hole ?

Anyone else identifying a lot with these ADHD and Autism posts more than they should?

Never been diagnosed with either but I'm also like 40 something now. Wasn't something we checked when we were younger.

Keep in mind that this is a meme community, not a diagnostic tool. People muddle up all sorts of topics with ADHD that feel relatable but aren't diagnostic criteria. Perfectionism for example isn't specific for ADHD or neurodiversity at all, and that's true for many things that get shared as memes here.

[-] FlihpFlorp@piefed.zip 5 points 3 days ago

Get yourself checked if you think you might have something

But one of my favorite things I saw a post say (and I’m paraphrasing)

“Everyone forgets things, everyone has trouble understanding, everyone has issues focusing. Everyone also pees but when you pee 60 times a day you go see a doctor”

Another thing I’ve seen people say is they definitely think they might be on a spectrum, but would getting tested, and by extension medication, actually help. For some the answer was no because they already had coping mechanisms and strategies that worked

But like I said if you think medication could help, see your doctor and get that beautiful brain drugged up

Loads of people were missed when young, it's worth looking into

Yea... 30-something here and it's uncanny how relatable these are. I'm taking them with a pinch of salt because they're memes, but there's some truth to it I'm convinced. Personally, it just coincides too much with my life experience to be unrelated. If you live in a country where these diagnostics are a thing I'd encourage you to go get one. I'm not sure I can do this where I live but I want to. I want answers

[-] frunch@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

There's also a reason it's addressed as a "spectrum"... There are many subdivisions of neurodiversity, given more time and research I'm sure we could learn quite a bit more that would help explain these behaviors/traits and help people manage and understand these things.

It's true though. I have to be better than perfect, otherwise I'm not going to be competitive enough. Everybody else is so amazing and they do it with way less effort than it takes me to do even half as good.

I want nice things and to be happy and have healthcare and surgeries and treat those around me to nice things and bring great things into the world.

I don't have room for anything less than world-changing. I must be excellent.

Had a 1 on 1 with my manager yesterday. He's says my perfectionism delays shit too long, but also realizes it's good when harnessed correctly bcz my work is solid. Just wish I could figure out where to do shit work to come in on time on my tasks. Going to start next week.

[-] python@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I have a coworker just like that! Love working together with them, because I have turned my back on perfectionism entirely, so I'm great at making mockups, proofs of concepts and prototypes at a rapid pace. Then I hand them my work and they refine it. Gives them a solid scaffolding of what to do and how it should end up looking, so they're not overwhelmed by pre-planning and considering everything upfront, and I get to not worry about the details. Solid win-win for everyone!

[-] Doctorbllk@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 days ago

Does your manager give you deadlines, even if just in theory? I have an adjacent issue where I'll do great work for as long as it takes me to do it. But if I have a deadline, I know I can't delay to meet that goal. Typically the sooner the better

[-] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago

Tim Pychyl, a specialist in procrastination, talks a bit about perfectionism. As a recovering perfectionist it was sobering to hear that it's something that can and does ruin people's lives. He does also talk a bit about things people can do to help it.

[-] RejZoR@lemmy.ml 10 points 4 days ago

I am perfectly adequate. That'll do perfectly.

[-] EldenLord@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

That‘s soo true. My standards for myself are already so low, I‘m happy if I remembered to drink enough water and did the loundry on a day.

But somehow I delude myself that if my image to the outside isn‘t perfect I‘ll be ousted from society. Stupid brain, stop it!

[-] Zink@programming.dev 2 points 3 days ago

The day I read about the association between ADHD and Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria it was like time froze while my brain recompiled all my memories with the new flags, and I saw the pattern in the chaos. Hooooly shit.

[-] Eryn6844@beehaw.org 4 points 4 days ago

I worked too hard to get here to be mediocre.

[-] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

I needed to see this, I've been really stressed out lately with some upcoming deadlines. Move slowly, slow is smooth, smooth is easy.
