codeberg is such an obvious choice, i have no idea why people don't immediately switch from GitHub

[-] snooting@wetshav.ing 16 points 2 weeks ago

They don't allow for private repos, so it's a non-starter for companies unless they want to self-host.

[-] fluckx@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago

What? All my codeberg repos are private.

If you do not want anyone (apart from your fellow collaborators) to see your repositories, mark your repository as "Private".

https://docs.codeberg.org/collaborating/repo-permissions/

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 weeks ago

There are terms and conditions for private people too regarding this (read next two sections): https://docs.codeberg.org/getting-started/faq/#before-i-start-using-codeberg

I love codeberg but can't move my private, non-foss repos there. FOSS repos for sure though.

[-] Jumuta@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 weeks ago

it's very understandable though, and 100MB is a lot of data

[-] eager_eagle@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

it's a lot of code, not a lot of data. If any repo has binary files you'll most likely need to store it somewhere else as there's not even an option to pay that used storage.

[-] Lazycog@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah no I'm not complaining about their decision. Quite happy about it! I just comment this in every "github alternative" comment section when codeberg is brought up for the sake of codeberg too because we don't want to flood them with people who would also set up private repos that break their ToS.

I have an account and contribute on Codeberg but keep my private, non FOSS/not-sure-of-license-yet repos somewhere else (currently gitlab).

Because not everyone works on free software (read their FAQ)

[-] eager_eagle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

they also have a limit of 100 repos, so I can't even migrate everything I have on github

[-] SethranKada@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 weeks ago

Check out Forgejo, it's what codeberg uses as far as im aware. They're the only ones even attempting to put the fediverse into git

NOTE: URLs written in italics are unofficial/self-hosted instances of their respective version control systems.

Don't know if GitLab counts as alternative (it has no bullshit according to Brave Shields, and AFAIK they're independent)

[-] fajre@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Brave has already had several leaks and a history of selling data, that’s why I switched to LibreWolf.

+1 for Sourcehut

Selfhosted Gitea ?

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago

Radicle is really worth checking out https://radicle.xyz/

I recently came across another forgejo instance: https://lavaforge.org/. Seems decent.

[-] fajre@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

interesting!

[-] m33@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

Probably codeberg, or gitea instance somewhere

[-] utopiah@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

I run my own Gitea instance at https://git.benetou.fr/ but I admit didn't look much at the federated aspect, yet.

Sadly I just checked https://forum.gitea.com/c/federation/10 and despite few attempts, e.g. https://nlnet.nl/project/Gitea/ and eventually potentially upstreaming via forgejo https://forgejo.org/2023-01-10-answering-forgejo-federation-questions/#will-gitea-also-gain-federation that does not seem to be usable right now.

I'm checking https://forgefed.org/ which I learned about via checking federation on Gitea and it looks nice, in theory, but until I see an actual list of instances federated together I'll just applaud the effort from afar.

[-] dont@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

https://radicle.xyz/ is not fediverse, but P2P

[-] poldy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Same as in the other thread, I'm going to recommend fossil-scm.org

Works for me.

[-] elias_griffin@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Fossil requires its own download client (not git) and like the other guy said Forgejo only accepts certain licenses, Gitea is Google which is obviously a no-go.

Gogs abandoned, Kallithea abandoned.

Realistically that leaves GitBucket https://github.com/gitbucket/gitbucket and Tuleap https://docs.tuleap.org/install.html

[-] utopiah@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Gitea is Google which is obviously a no-go.

Please explain how "Gitea is Google"

[-] elias_griffin@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Can’t edit. Gogs I’m happy to see did receive security fixes 3 months ago. Also Gitea being a no-go…get it, no-go…hahah.

It is good and proper to hate Google services.
