I have had an account on a Mastodon+glitch server for over a year. Lately, I am noticing unknown Masto account posts in my timeline. Any ideas?

Aside from the hashtag hypothesis, there are multiple timelines on Mastodon: trending, local, and global for example. I'm assuming you didn't suddenly accidentally start looking at a different timeline but still worth mentioning.

On the official app i can select either “local” or “following”, could you be on the wrong one?

Not really without knowing which instance you're talking about, but one guess is that you might be following a hashtag that has become more actively used.

That's my guess. I had the same experience tge first time I followed a hashtag, and I've seen it happen to at least one other person.
