Will they be abandoned, though, or will they just become slums where the people who are too poor to move to the non-floody areas have to live? 😬

Just abandon the downstairs and live upstairs, accept that sometimes you get soggy socks when going to work.

At least there's no wind turbine. That would bring down the property value immensely

We grew up with this knowledge and continue to keep building on flood plains, not changing our infrastructure and trying to be as American as possible.

Flood protections in this country simply aren't prepared for the regular extreme weather events we're now experiencing.

If anything around here is to go by, rich Londoners are very happy to buy second homes near the lakes and the sea….

Build some new builds on fancy stilts and with some clever marketing you could be quids in. You could charge them extra for mooring boats.

On a more serious note though, that’s bloody frightening.

Preferred choice: dont build any houses.

Second choice: build houses on flood plains.

Backstop: ignore climate change and charge people more for insurance.

Just do what the Netherlands did, ~30% of the country is under sea level

If only someone could have warned our politicians that the climate would change in this way

If only there were precendent, historically, for lands the uk had previously lost to the sea!!

All new housing should be built as high above sea level as possible, instead we are building in flood plains.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
