How could this be more safe?! Now you have to put extra concentration on the road instead of scanning ahead for animals, bikes, kids and cars.

This is the kinda shit lawful people dream up thinking everyone obeys every rule. No. I'm driving straight through that shit.

Also, they chopped parking down and you know someone's going to ignore the white line and end up parked in the road. See the black truck?

Reminds me of the engineering on our local mall. I'm the last to bitch about planting trees, but you can't see the fucking store signs from the back of the parking lot. You either have to creep along blocking flow, or go to the front where we want fewer cars. The parking lot is a confusing mess to slow people down. What really happens is a shitload of near misses. Meanwhile, at Walmart next door, regular lot, no issues.

I, for one, am DEFINITELY going to follow the prescribed path . . .

As slow as is humanly possible ;-).

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Malicious compliance is not lawful behavior. ;-)

The race car driver in me is just going to go straight down that road. It's the most optimal driving line.

It's a traffic calming pattern called a Chicane (though typically there is more structure, like a median, to enforce it)

That’s a terrible attempt at traffic calming for people who want to say:

“We’ve tried traffic calming and it doesn’t work!”

There’s still no bicycle lanes, and the on street parking is standing in for proper traffic containment.

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

I'm all for bike lanes in cities but this is most likely a suburb where people can freely move between street and sidewalk. Bike lanes here would be excessive given the lack of traffic, a chicane is a great way to slow drivers down

Also this photo was also taken in a way to exaggerate the wobbliness. It's not so ridiculous from above or the driver's seat

[-] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 15 points 22 hours ago

Traffic “calmers”, safer than speed bumps, and anyone that ignores them get tickets.

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 4 points 22 hours ago

Guess I'll just hit that black pickup that is in the squiggly lane then.

Yes, I know what it is intended to do. This is a really lazy and shitty implementation like early roundabouts added to side streets without redoing the corner curbs to make space for cars going around the circle.

[-] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 19 hours ago

You’re clearly never seen a vehicle hit a speeed bump at speed, it causes lose of control. So if you’re going straight, you’re actually safer this way. But people following the law still slow down.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Say what? Speed bumps work better at speed because your suspension sorta floats over them. Hit one at 35MPH vs. 15MPH, you'll see what I mean. Same as driving the rutted dirt road to our camp. 5-10MPH has you bouncing all over the place. 30MPH is about the right zone.

No idea what you're saying about loss of control. Maybe our speed bumps are entirely different?

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

I was commenting about how it was implemented on a straight street with no obvious considerations for the lanes
going into the spaces where cars are parked. Just about how they did it on this specific street, and not about comparative safety.

[-] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 0 points 15 hours ago

So? It still works on streets like that.

So what’s your point here then?

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 1 points 14 hours ago

I was extremely clear about what my point was. Do you assume I 'really mean' something other than what I wrote?

[-] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works -1 points 12 hours ago

I was hoping your point was something other than “I don’t understand it, so I’m dumb”, but thank you for clarifying.

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 1 points 12 hours ago

If you still think I don't understand that chicanes are good but that I am criticizing this specific one then your reading comprehension sucks.

[-] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works -1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Again, just because you can’t see how it’s beneficial doesn’t mean it’s not!

Chicans don’t always need physical curbs or other means! Today YOU learned! Neat eh?

Physical curbs are what would CAUSE someone to hit that black truck, but clearly you and other people who think they’ll just plow into the back of it, probably shouldn’t have a license.

Also, who’s cares if a parked car gets it? No one is injured, and guess what, it’s its OWN barrier itself! Neat eh!

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Where did I say that there should be curbs? You keep responding as if Isaid anything about speed bumps or curbs when I never did.

Learn to read.

[-] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 0 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Yea, I'd drive straight thru that mother fucker if there was no traffic.

I'm already going slow, looking for kids.

How fucking stupid.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Don't know where this pic is from, but yeah, I feel like most Americans would just go straight.

[-] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 0 points 19 hours ago

That’s the point, a speeding vehicle hitting speed bumps can loose control, so a drunk driver is less of a concern, but law abiding people are still slowed down appropriately.

Don’t mock shit just because you can’t comprehend it lmfao.

[-] ironhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 6 points 22 hours ago

If we stopped building fucking stroads these wouldn't be needed

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 2 points 22 hours ago
