The first step is to stop playing YGO and pick up an actually good TCG, like Pokemon(i have not played it)

The second step is to dip your toes into Master Duel and rage when you get trounced by floodgates or the new meta deck

I like Pokemon, but more in a nostalgic and theoretical way than actually consuming the media

Even when I was a kid, I just found the art of Yu Gi Oh to be far more dynamic and interesting than other popular card series

I know Yu Gi Oh is limited by the poor game design of its current iteration, but with 12,000 plus cards, mathematically it's still possible to find the right anti-meta deck and make the game work, at least until the nerds figure out a new meta strategy

I hear you, YGO definitely has a tighter, consistent identity compared to something like MTG. I think right now, though, if you want to have the most fun with it, you either play one of the older games like the World Championship or Tag Force series, try out Genesys format, or play through some events in Master Duel. Trying out new decks through the event loaners is at least more fun than struggling in ladder.

You want to build around a 1400/1700 Normal?

First, you need to go back in time about... 20 years.

There has to be some spell cards out there that love a humble hard-working machine

You'd be looking at XYZ fodder, at best, and even then, it'd be heavily Tuners(who are kinda behind, I think).

Yu-Gi-Oh has become a game of hand traps, denials, floodgating, and OTKs.

Cries in Ruddy Rose deck

In that case I suppose I'll need a trap heavy anti-meta deck, goddamn Konami and their redundant ass fusion/summoning obsession

[-] SmithrunHills@hexbear.net 3 points 6 months ago

If you want that, you just play Stun instead

might be unpopular opinion but I really love all the new summoning mechanics- the intricacies and absurd plays they facilitate is so fun. I just wish most games weren't just a comparison of hands and a coin toss simulator.

I checked out the Stun build-sets, honestly I'm surprised at how diverse the types are, the Wanghu deck seems to be calling to me tho, I'm a sucker for well-drawn beast cards

It's also the pace of the game. Using a card that weak in modern play(low stats, no effect, no protection) is nigh impossible, as it's now "get your strongest thing out as fast as possible".

I miss the days of strategically setting up a board, working around unintended losses and seeing what could be done with every hand. Now it's "I'm bricked" or "I'm God".

You're looking for Earth Machine, a deck that is popular, but it's time is long gone now.

If the Soviets won the Cold War, we'd be getting broken ass modern support for these little fellas
