So, when is this going to happen in people with neuralink implants?

[-] chocrates@piefed.world 16 points 7 months ago

You remember when IOT had so much potential? Now i won't buy anything smart that shouldnt be. And I generally try to buy hardware with an open stack.

We don't have to live like this.

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 months ago

I for one was never a believer in IOT. Bait and switch, early depreciation, privacy, etc.

I'll take "things that shouldn't need an internet connection to function properly" for 800, Alex

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 10 points 7 months ago

The entire world of home IoT devices shouldn't need an Internet connection. They should be able to work entirely based off of local network requests or other local connections (e.g. Zigbee or Thread).

[-] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

I think it was a lot more than $800.

Eight Sleep’s products rely on cloud connectivity to control temperature and track biometric data. When AWS went down, users lost access to the app that manages its water-cooled coils, leaving them stuck with whatever setting was last active.

Insane oversight to design the bed (or any product like this, really) such that it can't be adjusted without the internet.

[-] ggppjj@lemmy.world 13 points 7 months ago

But then they wouldn't be able to force customers to send them analytics to over-pattern-recognize other companies into buying from them!

Think of all the startups that need this crucial sleep data! Why, how else would they get a more complete picture of how the launch of their product is impacting the other influential members of the tech circles‽

Nice interrobang you got there.

My DIY floor thermostat has a 20 cent watchdog chip that requires a ping from the main MCU every 10 seconds or it will cut power to the heater.

I love my smart home stuff, but it's all locally controllable. My lights will still work with the Internet out. Now if my home server goes out not so much, but at least then it's my own fault.

CEO Matteo Franceschetti said, “We will work the whole night+24/7 to build an outage mode so the problem will be fixed extremely quickly.”

I'd rather they take their time and do it right instead of vibe coding a solution lol

But what do I know, I don't have an Internet of Things Bed.

[-] moondoggie@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

I mean, they might as well work around the clock since they don’t have beds to sleep in.

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 5 points 7 months ago

I mean, when shit hits the fan, my team gets together and fixes the problem together, minimal testing and code stink allowed. You just get everyone who knows the system together and have it out until everyone is on the same page

And it's a fucking bed... How complicated can it be? This is just failover logic

[-] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 7 months ago

Can’t trust anybody who doesn’t build an offline only mode into their always online crap. I see a resurgence of the Luddites incoming. Get your old dot matrix printers going.

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

That's some bougie shit. Zero sympathy from me

As someone who remembers what mattresses used to cost before you could buy memory foam mattresses that shipped in a small box from China, $2000 doesn't seem that bad. My wife paid $1500 for some POS Serta mattress and box spring fron some perpetually "going out of business" mattress store when we first got together in the mid 2000s. Without checking an inflation calculator, I imagine that was the equivalent to $4k today for a lumpy mattress with springs that poked your back.

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

At least it didn't overheat and get stuck at a bad angle. You knew what you were getting into back then!

[-] BaroqueInMind@piefed.social 6 points 7 months ago

What a stupid fucking product.

[-] VeryVito@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 months ago

But was anybody who deserves a good night’s sleep affected by this?

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 4 points 7 months ago

I came across this article and went to see if anybody posted it to Lemmy. While searching, I found this post about the same fucking company's beds.

Can’t sleep, the bed’s out.

[-] nupo@quokk.au 2 points 7 months ago

I thought having games be always online was bad, at least they never threatened to immolate me.

[-] blibla@slrpnk.net 2 points 7 months ago

couldn't you just .. pull the plug?
