Stealing is a social construct. As solitary animals, whale sharks cannot engage in stealing.

This was written by the whale shark legal team.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 13 points 4 weeks ago

excuse me do you practice whale shark law?

[-] ZoopZeZoop@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago

This action is specifically allowed under the Sustenance and Home Act of Reclamation and Keystone Species (SHARKS) of 1818 as proposed by Shark Whalington and ratified by the first North Atlantic Regional Wet and Humid Alliance Legislature (NARWHAL).

JELLYFISH (Joint Eurasian League Lesser Yahoo's Front Ichtyological Society and Hagioscopists) doesn't see that reading in the law and won't stand for it

[-] white_nrdy@programming.dev 4 points 4 weeks ago

If they do, I wonder if they know any bird lawyers. I imagine the animal law field is a pretty small community

I knew one guy, but he lost most of his clients after marketing a drink with raw crow eggs as the main ingredient.

ACKTCHU-ALLEE, stealing is a legal construct. Laws only apply to humans, so whale sharks cannot engage in stealing.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 16 points 4 weeks ago

Aren’t legal constructs are a subset of social constructs though? Also, I feel like the concept of stealing may predate laws though I have no evidence for this.

[-] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago

It’s got to have, right? My cat understands stealing

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 4 weeks ago

so we were eating chicken something. probably fajitas idk this was a while ago. my first soulcat was keeping my older brother's chair warm while he was in the bathroom, just sitting there like they were part of the conversation. suddenly out of the corner of my eye i see this, but with a strip of chicken:

[-] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

That's not theft. We only see it as theft because the cat does it sneakily, but it only sneaks because if it didn't the fajita might have escaped, as cats assume all food other than wet food and kibble is like mice

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

kill stealing is still stealling

[-] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 10 points 4 weeks ago

Fish in the net, 30 seconds ago: well, at least this situation can’t get ANY worse

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 40 points 4 weeks ago

If fishing isn't owning, eating isn't stealing.

[-] Mist101@lemmy.world 29 points 4 weeks ago

You wouldn't download a fish.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 15 points 4 weeks ago

The whale shark: "The fuck I wouldn't!"

[-] human@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

He spent hours 3D printing some and they just tasted like plastic.

[-] veniasilente@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago

Why wouldn't you? The internet cables are right there. Zero latency.

[-] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 10 points 4 weeks ago

It is the coolest crime after all

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 9 points 4 weeks ago

Is there supposed to be a net in that photo? I see a black trash bag.

[-] ryannathans@aussie.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago

I think it might be a very fine net

[-] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

If the holes in the net are so tiny, is that big fish just sucking fish juice and goo? He couldn't get a whole fish out of there.

[-] ryannathans@aussie.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe it bites it open? I dunno hey

[-] Damage@feddit.it 5 points 4 weeks ago

Does the shark have a fishing permit?

[-] P1k1e@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

More like a Swoop

[-] thanks_shakey_snake@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

Whale sharks are primarily filter feeders, so if anything, he's just slurping a layer of nutritious plankton off of the net that has negative value to the human fishers anyway.

They're actually kinda helping each other out.
